1987 was the first year of law school. It was also the first year of freedom - the narcissistic boyfriend had left for a 5 year trip to Europe (he returned after 5 months, but I was having none of it). It was so good to live alone and go out once again, when I wasn't studying. The songs I liked were:
6. I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (Who Loves Me) Whitney Houston
13. (I Just) DIED IN YOUR ARMS Cutting Crew
33. DON'T DREAM IT'S OVER Crowded House
Guess I didn't like much top 40 stuff that year.

I've always thought Belinda was a cutie. And it's amazing how long Madonna's been in the spotlight!

1987...first girlfriend, sophomore in high school, first pot use, first real parties, first times for the 'rents going out of town and leaving me alone (the FOOLS!), turned 16...some of those songs just timeshifted me 16 years into the past...
Of course, Joshua Tree. One of the best albums of all time. U2 is one of the groups my kids will listen to, just like I listened to the Beatles and the Stones.
Lots of people on the downsides of their careers--Duran Duran, Heart, Starship, Michael Jackson (although we didn't know it then), Bob Seger, Billy Idol, Billy Vera..
That sprocking C'est La Vie song had got to be one of the worst one hit wonders ever...How could someone cram that much SUCK into one song?
Because we're amongst friends, I will admit that one of my presents for my sixteenth birthday was that Whitesnake album.
U got the look--I just got Sign o' the Times out for a listen. Still solid, although in the cd era he probably could've compressed to a really, really good fifteen song album. Of course, the road to rock'n'roll hell is paved with bloated double albums (go ahead, name more than four really, really good double albums: Exile on Main Street, Physical Graffiti, what else?). So many great lines in that song: "Closing time, ugly lights, everybody's inspected" "Did I say an hour? My face is red--I stand corrected" Of course, to my sixteen year old eyes, the fact that Prince took Sheena "My Baby Takes the Morning Train" Easton and had her talking openly about ramming and (later) her "Sugar Walls" meant that the Purple One had sexual powers far beyond my ken. Gods, I loved (and love) Prince.
Is it just me, or does Crowded House seem like a much better group now than they seemed then?
And didn't REM's Document come out about this time? Wasn't it 1987? And "The One I Love" isn't in the Top 40?
Other 1987 memories: Gene Loves Jezebel, The Cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, the return of the 60's (remember MTV doing "Summer of Love" retrospectives? I don't know about you, but me and my little neohippy friends were obsessed with the 60's), pegged pants, hightop Reeboks, bolo ties...Have I said too much?
The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.
Don't judge me!

1. FAITH George Michael/ absolute garbage, fucking sucked
2. LIVIN' ON A PRAYER Bon Jovi/ well i am not really a fan of bon jovi but its better then some of the trash on this list, thought this song is just plain shit.
3. ALONE Heart/ anne and nancy wilson, who gives a fuck about those 2, and this song is STILL played to death.
4. WITH OR WITHOUT YOU U2/ good song great group, too bad they suck now.
5. LA BAMBA Los Lobos/ i liked this song
6. I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (Who Loves Me) Whitney Houston/ what she's really saying is she wants to dance with somebody or anybody who has some coke.
7. NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW Starship/ what the fuck happened to this band???? jefferson airplane becomes jefferson starship which becomes starship and each new incarnation SUCKED!!!!
8. I STILL HAVEN'T FOUND WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR U2/ liked the song
9. DIDN'T WE ALMOST HAVE IT ALL Whitney Houston/ what? all the blow??
10. I KNEW YOU WERE WAITING FOR ME Aretha Frnklin & George Michael/ cant remember it

MLLASH:
"WHO'S THAT GIRL" should be Eurythmics (not Madonna, don't defame the title with her name). That was the best song of the year.

QL, I see you realized this top 40 song was the theme from Madonna's movie Who's That Girl.
I actually hated that song. I *did* really like the OTHER release from that soundtrack, though, which also placed in the Top 40 of the year!
I'll help you find what you're looking for Is it my love you adore? You're wasting time Make up your mind And get into the groove...
Madonna liked the phrase "get into the groove", didn't she?

DON'T DREAM IT'S OVER Crowded House 34. IS THIS LOVE Whitesnake 37. NOTORIOUS Duran Duran 38. KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF Georgie Satellites

1987 was the year I left home and 'grew up' a lot! I remember nearly every song on the list and so many of them have big memories attached to them. oh well, they don't make them like they used to...

I'm only guilty of not spell-checking a copy and paste.
