I've got a lifetime membership, so I won't really be able to tell what the 'free to play' crowd will be seeing. (Lifetime subs go straight up to the higher tier, as if I was still paying extra for extra bells and whistles.)
It's an interesting game. I like some of the features, such as attacks that, instead of costing power, build up power, so that you can then unleash your better attacks. More comic-book-ish to blast, blast, blast and then hit them with the slobberknocker, I guess than the CoH approach of leading with your big nova sniper blast and then finishing them off as they run at you.
Having one of the 'flight' options being hovering on a floating rock, like Terra, was also neat.
But
burrowing, as a movement power? Wow. That's the uber-suck. Not only is it junky (since it's stopped by bumps in the terrain, like sidewalks), but let's just raise our hands and list off as many super-heroes who *tunnel* into combat, shall we?
If you do give it a shot, ActorLad, be sure to test all of your power options *before* you leave the PowerHouse (the building you train in). Once you leave, the powers you selected are 'locked in' and harder to change later with what they amusingly call a 'retcon' instead of a 'respec.' Test them in the PowerHouse, see if you like them, then swap around and play with some others, until you find the one you really like. (Ice Slide, for instance, is *way* less useful than the Flying Rock movement power, or any of the other Flight options, and Teleport takes a lot of getting used to, much like in CoH, and might just flat out not be worth the effort to use.) As long as you don't leave the PowerHouse while testing, you can swap them around for free, until you get one you are happy with.
