Did anyone catch this show last night, it was on for 2 hours, 2 seperate shows back to back. I thought it was incredibly entertaining, far more then i ever expected, very much in the vein of Smallville in my opinion, Gwenivere(sp) i guess would be the pete ross of this show. The characters arent what i call captivating but i do enjoy Merlin a bit, i dont really care for Gwen's character, but it just started so ya gotta build a little. The whole magic backstory and the last dragon(voiced by john hurt) is a great mythology to build a show on, i hope this show lasts.

I watched it on Hulu just last night (both eps are up).
Tony Head was so not-Giles that I couldn't believe it was him! Cool!
I'm not exactly in love with the kid playing Merlin or the kid playing Arthur (although the Arthur kid bears an ever-so-faint resemblance to Prince William, and I wonder if that was deliberate?).
'Gwen' is awesome, and I like Morgaine as well.
I'm getting a serious Smallville vibe from the setup with Morgaine as a friend of the family, because we know she doesn't stay that way.
She's gonna figure out that Merlin is up to something, she's gonna try to find out his secret, Merlin (and anyone who does know his secret) is gonna go through all sorts of stuff to hide his secret from her, she's gonna figure out what he's hiding (and get her hands on the book), and find out that everyone has been lying to her and hiding stuff behind her back and go all darkside, and it's gonna be all 'Lex, don't you trust me?' and 'Clark, I thought we were friends' as they move behind each other's backs, with 100% less homoerotic Clex tension.
Or not.
Anywho, it's watchable. Legend of the Seeker (also available on Hulu) is better, IMO.

the outlawing of magic would be similar to the hiding of clark's powers in smallville. Morgaine is going to be the Lex Luthor of Merlin even though its not a friend kinda thing going on right now.

I'm not sure that any of the characters or events, will play out like any of the original Camelot stories, really. Arthur isn't an unknown prince or a child, but a contemporary of Merlin AND Gwen, who is a maid, not a princess. Uther is alive and the one who's established Camelot and Morgaine isn't Author's half sister but his father's ward. So, I think, anything goes, which I absolutely prefer. The witch's making everyone sleep with cobwebs and everything, certainly looked like 'Sleeping Beauty' (and why was she so murderous towards Arthur? Why was Valiant trying to kill Authur in the second episode, for that matter?) Besides the events/timelines/identities being changed, I also like the chosen actors (Gwen is growing on me) and find them charming, although Merlin looks a bit like a youngish Clark Kent. OR a youngish Spock.

The reason for the murderous attitude toward Arthur is because the witch's son was beheaded and she swore an eye for an eye a son for a son. As for the reason why Valiant was trying to kill arthur, that is a question i have also. I really enjoyed the scene where the witch put everyone to sleep

Thanks for the info! I joined the first episode a little late, I came in on the singer's campsite and death.
Valiant (usually a Prince and 'good') was strangely out of character, I thought.
The snakes were way cool and scary, though.
I hope someone isn't going to try killing Arthur EVERY episode!

I tried to watch it last night. poor scripting, lukewarm characters, pointless anachronisms (which I normally don't mind if done well)... I gave up after about 20 minutes.
it seemed that it couldn't decide if it was a Smallville wanna-be, Faux-Medieval CSI, or anything in between. But to me, it failed on all accounts.
The childhood friend Exnihil never had.
