http://www.scotsindependent.org/features/food/butterie_rowies.htm

Once upon a time I promised you all a recipe for making your very own rowies.

Well, here's a link to not only a recipe, but a potted history of Aberdeen as well.

I hope you enjoy!

I was quite surprised at that too - these must be healthy ones, replacing a lot of the lard with butter. lol

"Eat a butterie and dream that you are in France"?? I guess I would dream I was in Aberdeen instead...

That's no salt to speak of anyways. And probably less fat than you'd use in shortbread. Isn't using butter cheating on the original taste?

No idea , FC.

I guess different bakeries use differing amounts to get their own unique taste (there's not really that much difference between them all).
You do also get vegetarian butteries, which are perfectly palatable, so you can replace butter / lard with (I imagine) vegetable oil.

I was quite surprised to see how little salt there was, considering how they can taste.

Radio 2 presenter / TV personality / Eurovision Song Contest presenter Terry Wogan recently described them as tasting like they were made with seaweed, or something similar.
Maybe a little salt just goes an awfully long way.

I've just been informed today that apparently Downies Bakery of Peterhead make a wholegrain version.
See, healthy options.

My friend, Annette, says she'll try to remember and take one in for me to try next week.
But, knowing what her memory's like I'm not going to hold my breath.
