Ummm, I don't think the incident you're talking about happened at the Grammy's. Beyond that, the Grammy nominations are supposed to be based on votes from the Academy itself, if enough people got behind an artist (vote), they get a nomination.

Yeah, it was the VMAs rather than the Grammy's.

Though I would suppose one might question the wisdom of inviting him to any awards show after his behavior at another.

I also nominate NoLongerLegion to be a judge on American Idol, and on The Voice, and to be the host on the Amazing Race, and to appear on every reality TV show ever!

Well, the nomination process is done by secret ballot from the members themselves after a panel compiles a list of recordings that are eligible (based on genre and date of release, not merit or identity of the artist). To have the academy block any artist would severely undermine its credibility. This has little to do with the show itself, which I'm sure the producers have say over, but the awards themselves are supposed to be set apart from any politics or influence.

It's an unpalatable fact that talent/accomplishments and politeness/decorum do not always go hand in hand.

Maybe Kanye could still be nominated for the awards, but simply be disinvited from attending.

Yeah, I don't think there's any way to legitimately prevent him from receiving an award, though letting him receive the award "in absentio" might be a good idea.

Of course, there's also the fact that they'll probably make more money by having him on the show, if only because people will tune in to see if he's going to do something crazy.

Who makes up the Academy for the Grammy's? I've always wondered.

Not only is Kanye West a rapper in his own right, but he's also a producer and I know he's produced hits for a lot of other stars. Meaning, the stars and their record labels owe Kanye and probably want to utilize him again for future successes.

My favorite moment in the 'everyone hates Kanye' aftermath from that VMA's show was when South Park did a parody of him. HILARIOUS.

The year that Jethro Tull won best metal over, well actual metal groups, proved that the grammy awards are irrelevant.
I've been shocked and appalled with the grammy awards since 1989.

The Recording Academy is a strange beast, and has a massive membership list (18,000 supposedly), but they are all industry insiders to one degree or another. The rules are a little funky, because you don't have to have listened to all the nominees in a category to vote on it, and you can only vote on 10 categories altogether I believe.

The funniest moment I remember from Grammy telecasts was the year the producers pretty much correctly guessed just about every category and had that performer sing before their award was announced. Expect for Henry Rollins, who performed "Liar", only to lose the Hard Rock recording to Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" a minute later. Chris Cornell took the stage and said "Hank, they made a 'Liar' out of you!", followed by "Why the heck did you people think our song was Hard Rock, anyway?"

I don't know. Consider how many creepy, horrible people are tolerated and loved in the entertainment field. The dude may have behaved like a jackass, but other celebs remain persona grata in the biz after having done far, far worse.

shrug

Grammy irrelevance dates back to Starland Vocal Band winning best new artist. Should have just given "Afternoon Delight" song of the year and left it at that...

My tastes in music have always been so far from the mainstream that I have never followed the Grammys at all, but I suppose if they did what they were supposed to do, there wouldn't be so many different music awards.

Bah! I'm still shocked and appalled by Henry Mancini beating out Van Cliburn's performance of Tchaikovksy's Concerto No. 1 In B-Flat Minor for Album of the Year back in 1958!

I bet Doctor Mayavale's "friends" were all on the Committee. That would explain pretty much everything about how the awards are usually doled out.

I' m ambivalent towards the Grammy's. Yes, they are as prone to influence peddling as the other awards, and they can frequently air on the side of populism over those more deserving, BUT they also cover a HUGE swath of musical genres. I have a friend whose husband has a few Grammy Awards for his work in the classical field, and it's pretty neat to see people like that recognised (and the opera, and the Latin, and the jazz, etc. etc.)

The idea of a peer voted awards isn't an inherently bad thing, as musical insiders should appreciate good music more so than just what's popular (would Arcade Fire, Indie darlings from Montreal, have beat out the Lady Gaga's of the world for best album on any other award show?), but they are still influenced by the bigger players throwing their weight around and using it as a promotional machine. Though I would argue the Grammy's aren't as bad in this respect as the Oscars and Emmys have become.

IMO, once an industry starts broadcasting its 'insider awards' to the rest of the world, its time to start lampooning and heckling them.

I know advertising has its own "Grammy" type awards ceremony. They're smart enough (plus evil enough tongue ) to make sure non-advertisting execs have to struggle to get real information on the ceremony.
