With SDCC coming up soon I thought it would be a good time to finally get one to more easily keep in contact with everyone but I have no clue what brand/kind/versions are good/adequate/crud. Any help on finding the right one for me would be appreciated.
FYI I already have a digital cam and an MP3 player so while those functions are nice they aren't needed.

Me and my partner both have LG enVs (VX-9900). Mines olive green. We frequently use the camera feature to send each other pictures from job sites. They're also internet capable as of now (though I'm thinking of ditching that particular feature on mine) and come equipped w/a full keyboard. Also, the Navigator feature gets frequently used. As far as durability goes, I've dropped mine several times without any noticeable damage. That's about as technical as I can get, ActorLad, but here's a link to a page that gives you more a detailed description of the phones functions and features. Mobiledia: LG enV

Hey, ActorLad, if you don't have a cell phone already and don't have a great need for one in your everyday life, you might want to consider getting a TracFone. I used those for years, and they're pretty handy. The phones themselves are pretty cheap and I was able to get reception on them everywhere ... even in Canada once! There's no contract. You just prepay minutes.

I have a motorola Tracfone and it takes pretty great pictures, is inexpensive, but will only send one picture at a time, which can eat up minutes. I used to have a net 10 phone that i liked better because the minutes where cheaper, but it didnt have the camera feature.
The good news, like Blue says, is that it has great reception because it has a deal with more networks.
I used to use alltell, but they liked to double charge and i spent too much time getting my money back. Then i went to suncom. They liked to send my customers who were going to leave a message to 1800bigexcit, apparantly a gay phonesex line. Kinda shocking to some of them, lol. Plus, they had really crappy service.
Then i went to verizon. I was actually in the parking lot of the verizon store in Florence and could not get reception. I had to drive almost five miles out of the city to get it.
Dropped them like a bad habit.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!
Something pithy!

The plan I have with my cell phone would give me roaming charges in San Diego. How would I get a disposable one for use in San Diego?

You can buy a Tracfone there, or you can by a Tracfone at home and reset the local coverage area to San D.

Do you think it would be a good idea (ie cheaper) for Jen or I to buy one of these when we come over rather than pay to use our UK mobiles?

So due to problems with my Net10 cell (and due to having some extra cash from my tax refund) I'm thinking about getting an Iphone. Anyone have any experience with them, be it positive or negative?

My cousin has one. She likes it, but says the phone gets hot when you hold is against your ear for long periods.

Everyone I know who has one loves it.
I'm planning on getting an iTouch, meself, 'cause I'm sick of cell phones.

The iphone is much more than a phone. It's a platform to sell you stuff through the itunes appstore. I almost bought one last week but I couldn't justify doubling my base cell phone bill and being the geek that I 'd probably be buying 20-30 dollars in games and 'business tools' from that store per month.

Well after a visit to the local AT&T store I've pretty much definitively decided on getting an Iphone. I just need to make a choice between the 8 or 16 gig models.

As of yesterday afternoon I'm now the proud owner of a 16-Gig 3G iphone. I've only uploaded the Facebook and MySpace apps so far but I really like it!

Annoyingly I didn't realize said phone didn't have a video recording function until like a day ago. I went to my local AT&T store today to try to swap it for an S but the didn't have any in stock, so I'm stuck with this while I'm in SD. If I just figured that out sooner I'd have the right phone now. I'm pissed because I planed to video-blog at least part of my trip this year. Oh well.

Bumping this up for a reason I've discovered a site that has free wallpapers, ringtones, etc. Zedge.com I already have a bunch of stuff uploaded (including a Legion L logo for Blackberry (username bathori). Anyways there is tons of good stuff there, and awesome tools to make your own. If you can't (or don't want to) make your own stuff let me know what you want and I'll make it and upload it

Thanks for finding that site, I'll explore it when I have more time.
In related news we finally got a 3G network up here which is nice because I can finally use my 32-gig iPhone at it's full capacity.
