That's right. In case you don't know, Brad Meltzer is spear-heading an initiative to save and restore the Cleveland house where a young Jerry Siegel created Superman. Meltzer is spot on -- it's a local, state and national disgrace that the former Siegel home has no historic designation or preservation assistance.

There are lots of ways to contribute to the Siegel & Shuster Foundation. One is a charity auction with weekly lots on E-Bay. This week features a Curt Swan cover of the entire 1960s Legion of Super-Heroes, donated by Mark Waid (go Mark!). The drawing has a current bid of $3,850, leaving all the other items in the dust! It's not even close. The Legion (and Legion fandom) comes to the rescue again! Gee, did Superboy ever actually help rebuild Legion HQ? Seems like the Miracle Machine did all the work.

The Glenville area, now known more for high school football with an Ohio St. connection than anything else, actually is making a small resurgence, simply due to the number of NFL players they are cranking out.

As a poster on the linked site wrote, a Superman museum would be a cool addition to Cleveland, though I don't see how it would be anything but "created." So little remains that Cleveland could claim.

BTW, does this make Steubenville, Smallville?

BB, I think the most important thing Cleveland can and should claim is the "birthplace of Superman" concept and what can flow from that, as they have so successfully done with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It's really reclaiming the history of that time, of Jewish immigrants and the milieu of the 1930s and how it led to Superman. That's what actually studying and appreciating history is all about. And it's such a great metaphor for redressing the neglect of communities like Glenville. Imagine what "birthplace of Superman" could do for that neighborhood and the people in it? After all, Superman started off as a crusader for the poor and oppressed! High time he MADE time for some of THAT action again, you ask me.

This has been a problem in Chicago, too, as culturally significant places (.e.g., locations critical to the development of blues, R&B and gospel music) that are in poorer communities crumble to dust, perish from fire, or just get torn down.

Update! The Curt Swan Legion drawing sold for a whopping $7,600, leading by far the items auctioned last week! Thanks in no small part to the Legion, the Siegel & Shuster Society have raised over $50,000, enough to restore the exterior integrity of the Siegel House. Way to go, comics fans, and way to go, Legion!

I think that instead of saving the house as is, they should shrink the neighborhood and keep it in a bottle. That would be in the perfect Superman spirit.
