So, I don't know if you've heard, but about a third of my state is engulfed in wildfires at the moment. CNN has an intersting article about the statistics and government action being taken. So far seven counties in Southern California (including mine) have been declared a state of emergency. Over 500,000 people have been evacuated already and more than 1,000 homes have been destroyed in San Diego county alone. Luckily, so far, only two people have been confirmed dead. That's pretty good for a three day fire. Still, it's worrisome when people are saying the only way the fires are going to go out is if the wind changes or they hit the ocean. That's a lot of destruction. And the winds aren't likely to change-- the Santa Anas are some of the strongest and most consistent winds around and have been spreading the fires rather rapidly (though I hear they may have weakened). I've even heard people say the fires should be compared to Katrina (as opposed to the Oakland Hills fires) in terms of the scope of damages. So, uh, yeah. Scary. Anyone else on alert here..? EDIT: And a picture that's definitely worth 1,000 words...

Been worried about you, Gary and other SoCal members for the last couple of days Cali. Thanks for starting this thread. Let's get a roll call going so we know you all are safe.

Thanks, Scott. The fire that was up here's completely contained, so it's mostly just ashy every time I go outside. But Gary's really in the hot zone. Hope he's okay...

This is all over the news channels, Cali. Stay safe, and that goes for Gary and Mogli too! Anybody here actually been evacuated yet?

Yeah my thoughts are with all you guys in the area. I know you can be hundreds of miles away and get horrible smoke.
That's probably one of the nicest real estate areas in the whole country. I can't even imagine the beautiful homes burning up.

I was sent home yesterday (and never went in today) as my work is in the voluntary evacuation zone. Fortunately, I live (both residences) near downdown and away from any danger.
The only problem is the air is thick and dirty from the smoke.
I'm glad to hear that Beth is safe as well. Who else lives down here?

You guys just take care of yourselves Gary. You know that if you do have to get out, and you want to get far away, you always have a place with us.

When I see the fires on the news, I so want to be the Flash and run right over and put out the fires.
Stay safe Gary and everyone else in Southern California.

Take good care. Don't be the last to leave.
On another note, we've had an unusually vivid sunset. Wonder if the smoke has reached this far.

This is just like what we had in Greece in August. Except that it was arson, not just strong winds... I hope everyone is healthy and safe.

They are??? Lemme check yahoo news... Yep. They are. Here it was just crazy people who either wanted to deforest certain areas so they could exploit them later (even though burned forests are protected by the law and supposedly reforested as soon as possible)) or they did it for political reasons which is equally crazy. What about California though? What's the "excuse" for arson?

Well, I know that one fire was caused by a fallen electrical wire or something of that nature. The others... Who knows? Sounds like they do think the Santiago fire in the OC was arson, though. 15 fires still rage, 6 people dead and over 1300 homes destroyed. Hope everyone down there is staying safe. We're lucky our fire here got contained quickly...

I'm in Yucca Valley, but my friend, Leonel, is in Running Springs, about 60 miles away. I haven't heard from him, so y'all keep him in your thoughts.
