For the moment, at least, gays can now get married in Maine. It passed through the House and Senate, and the Governor signed it.

Of course, the opponents have 90 days to get 55,000 signatures to have a referendum to overturn it, but still...

Small victories smile

You beat me to the punch with this news.

Hopefully enough people in Maine have seen how letting gay couples marry has affected MAssachusetts (not at all) and will not waste time on repealing this law.

Maine voters have shot down a referendum in the past that has tried to remove gay rights (although the first couple of attempts passed), so I will be interested to see how this turns out.

Just read this today:

Quote
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Republicans can reach a broader base by recasting gay marriage as an issue that could dent pocketbooks as small businesses spend more on health care and other benefits, GOP Chairman Michael Steele said Saturday.
Steele said that was just an example of how the party can retool its message to appeal to young voters and minorities without sacrificing core conservative principles. Steele said he used the argument weeks ago while chatting on a flight with a college student who described herself as fiscally conservative but socially liberal on issues like gay marriage.
"Now all of a sudden I’ve got someone who wasn’t a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for," Steele told Republicans at the state convention in traditionally conservative Georgia. "So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money."
I hope someone grabs it with a big headline that says the chair of the RNC is against all marriage because it costs businesses money. That same argument can be used against allowing any couple to get married.

It is so frustrating seeing (mostly) Republicans demean my relationship so much. And sound so stupid doing it. And have people buy into it.

AAAAAAAAHHHHH! Sorry, just had to vent when I read that.

You know Steele never said whether his "argument" swayed the college student.
