The new Doctor Who is to be played by Christopher Eccleston. For more details, go here: http://www.gallifreyone.com/newstv.php

Having just seen him in 28 Days Later, I'd say he's an interesting choice. I guess I must have seen him in Elizabeth, too, but I don't remember the character.
So much depends on other factors besides the Doctor, though. How silly will the scripts be? Will he be saddled with an unwatchable companion? Is it going to be a kids's show or serious science fiction? And will I need to have BBC America to see it?
It's been so long since Doctor Who was on, I'm not sure how it will stand up to the memory of shows like Farscape and Firefly.
Why is a mouse when it spins? I never did learn the answer to that one!

As far as scripts go, I'd say the show is in pretty safe hands...
Russell T. Davies ("Queer as Folk" and the new series' producer) will be doing 8 episodes out of the 13 planned.
Steven Moffat ("Coupling" creator) will be doing 2 episodes.
The remaining three are going to Mark Gatiss ("League of Gentlemen"), Paul Cornell (numerous Who novels as well as writing "The Scream of the Shalka" Who webcast cartoon), and finally Rob Shearman (who is responsible for some of the best Big Finish Doctor Who audio plays out there).
No word on how it'll be shown here in America (though I would hope we'd get dvds of the new series if not actual broadcasts on television)...

Any word on how long the storyarcs will be? One of the things I liked about "Dr Who" was the length of their stories.
And even though the effects were mostly low-fi, I could get into the ideas, plot, and character interactions.

I am unfamiliar with Eccleston's work, but I am intrigued.
I'll be hoping for the best.

I'll be hoping for the best. he's done quite a lot of UK based dramas !!! not sure which of these have been shown in the US, though ??? have you seen "Gone in 60 Seconds" ??? he played the villain, in this !!! and as mentioned earlier, he was in "Elizabeth", i'll have to think what else, he's been in .... Didn't see either one. I may just not have anything to go by. But hey, it's Doctor Who. If it screens here, I'll see it.

Re: Story Arcs The new show is going to have hour-long (okay, 45 or so minute) episodes. Most will be self-contained, unfortunately. However out of the initial 13 episodes, there will be 3 two-part stories, and 7 standalones episodes.
No word yet on a regeneration sequence for McGann (though he has been quoted as recently as February saying he'd be happy to film one and pass the torch). Also no word on the TARDIS interior, though happily it has been stated more than once by RTD that it will retain the Police Box exterior.
The only other information that is currently known is the name of the Doctor's new companion. Rose Tyler. No word on who's to play her yet, though...

Eccleston has also appeared as Nicole Kidman's husband in "The Others". And this is from Dark Horizons : The BBC reports that the network is in talks to bring back those most famous robot villains for their new incarnation of "Doctor Who" scheduled to air next year.
Unlike other characters and races on the show, the Daleks were creations of late sci-fi writer Terry Nation whose estate now owns the rights for usage of the metal monsters. Writer Russell T. Davies and the producers of the new 'Who' have been in talks with the estate about use of them in the new show. Negotiations are apparently "going well" with a likely "positive result" - "The estate is protecting an important property, after all, and I can appreciate why they are being so careful".
A BBC spokesman confirmed "We are negotiating to feature the Daleks in the new series, but no deal has yet been made. Negotiations are going on all over the place about the monsters, including the Daleks. We are just waiting to see what comes out".

Excellent news about the Daleks! Hope they're able to come to some agreement with the Nation estate... Oh, for anyone having trouble recalling the earlier companions, may I recommend the following site, which has a plethora of pictures of not only the regular cast members, but the villains and monsters as well: http://www.shillpages.com/dw/dwia.htm

Hartnell Era Poll Closed, results as follows: Since so few remember the earlier stuff, it's not surprising there weren't a lot of votes this first time around. Susan - 1 vote Steven - 1 vote Dodo - 1 vote I was going to vote for Steven, but forgot to do so in the time allowed, therefore it can't be counted. The era of the first Doctor is still largely undecided, but we have at least some idea of who was liked best, since they at least received some votes! This time around, I'll run the next two Doctors' eras simultaneously. Please vote for one from each of the two polls. THE PATRICK TROUGHTON ERA COMPANION POLL: Polly Wright (Anneke Wills) Ben Jackson (Michael Craze) Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines) Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling) Zoe Herriot (Wendy Padbury) THE JON PERTWEE ERA COMPANION POLL: Liz Shaw (Caroline John) Jo Grant (Katy Manning) Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) BONUS UNIT POLL (Vote for your favorite member of the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce): Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney) Captain Mike Yates (Richard Franklin) Sergeant John Benton (John Levene) Corporal Bell (Fernanda Marlowe) Brigadier Winifred Bambera (Angela Bruce) Sergeant Zbrigniev (Robert Jezek) Voting for these three Polls ends on Friday, April 2 at 9pm EST. Happy voting!

she had a few #1's !!! if i remember correctly, and she's married to Chris Evans [ a TV presenter, DJ and producer ]
not sure what the fans will make of her, but they did have Bonnie Langford with Colin Baker !!!

Looks like there won't be any Daleks after all. From www.darkhorizons.com: It's news that many a Who-vian has been dreading. The BBC has confirmed the Daleks will not appear in its new "Doctor Who" series after a failure to agree terms. It seems that talks between the BBC and the estate of late sci-fi writer Terry Nation, who created the Daleks, broke down over issues of editorial control.
A BBC spokesperson said "After lengthy negotiations, the BBC and Terry Nation have been unable to reach an agreement on the terms of the use of the Daleks. The BBC offered the very best deal possible but ultimately we were not able to give the level of editorial influence that the Terry Nation estate wished to have".
Terry Nation's estate on the other hand, aside from saying they were "bitterly disappointed", accused the BBC of ignoring copyright laws and said the corporation was trying to "ruin the brand of the Daleks...We wanted the same level of control over the Daleks that we have enjoyed for the last 40 years".
There is a small sliver of hope - seems the estate would be willing to make a new deal if the BBC accepted the arrangement that had been in place for the last 40 years. However Davies and co. are already indicating though they are disappointed, they're continuing the show anyhow without the metal monsters as all indications were the Daleks role in the new series first season run would've been minimal anyhow.

There are strong rumors of the Autons being in the new show as well...it's a shame though, I was just beginning to gain a proper appreciation for the little pepperpots...

While the reintros of old enemies could be really cool, I think the lack of Daleks could be a blessing. It could push the writing staff towards coming up with new stuff.

Yeah, it would make a change from ending every storyline with "Ha ha ha, they can't chase us up these stairs!" lol!

Getting the rights to the Daleks was always going to be dicey. Terry Nation and his Lawyer were notoriously demanding during the original run (and with good reason; they're trying to protect the Daleks as intellectual properties) and his lawyer seems to be following the same line for the Nation estate now.
Apparently the inclusion of the Daleks in Looney Toons: Back in Action without their knowledge made the Nation estate feel the BBC weren't dealing with them in good faith, it seem.
