Over on the DC boards mrteriffic77 makes this point which I never really picked up on when reading the issue first time around.

LSH is not in the same timeline or reality as the rest of the DCU. The side story shows that in the LSH universe, DC superheroes are fictional comic book heroes..... Just like on Earth Prime.

So does this mean that this version of the Legion is in fact set on Earth Prime? And does it mean that once crisis is over the Earth Prime Superboy will find a new home with the legion?

Another possibility is that this reading of comic books to inspire heroes seems to reflect the original Flash of Two world’s scenario and the way Jay in a comic inspires Barry to take on the name of the Flash.

Either way it looks like what I thought were simply throwaway images, a nice artistic conceit if you will, may be more.

Anyone got any thoughts?

These Legionnaires do seem to exist in an earth-prime-like continuity. I really hope the answers are "No." I don't want to see a Kryptonian Legionnaire (unless it becomes necessary to save the title from diminishing sales.)

Hmm...I didn't really think of this. But hasn't it been established elsewhere that comics exist in the DC universe? Didn't Barry Allen grow up reading Flash comics, etc.?

The only consistent feature of all of your dissatisfying relationships is you.

Don't judge me!

I could be wrong but Barry growing up realing Flash comics was that not one of the things the Crisis and Zero Hour changed??

I still think the comics and the appearance of Earth Prime Superboy in Infinate Crisis are linked somehow.

IIRC, Barry first read about Jay Garrick as a fictional comicbook character but later found out he was a real person from a parallel world (Earth-2). This was in the 1960s, I think. Similarly, I suspect the Legion's comic books represent other "Earths" that will come back into existence after Infinite Crisis. Right now, it seems the WaK Legion only has access to those other realities through their fiction, but that might change as it did for Barry.

If the WaK Legion is the future of the mainstream DCU after Infinite Crisis, as we are led to believe, then I don't see how they could be on Earth-Prime - unless the DCU that arises out of Infinite Crisis is also shifted to Earth-Prime. Possible, I suppose, but it seems unlikely. I think the DCU and the Legion will continue to exist on Earth-1, but as part of a larger multiverse.

That being said, there's nothing to prevent Earth-Prime Superboy from joining the Earth-1 Legion if that's what TPTB have in mind. It's no weirder than Pocket Universe Superboy being a member of the post-Crisis LSH.

Another way of explaining this is to say that the backup story in Legion #11 doesn't take place in the same world as the rest of the series. After all, the little caption giving us the setting says 'Elseworld - Legion Plaza'. But, a couple of pages before that, a similar caption puts Brainiac 5 in 'Legion Plaza - Earth' or something like that.

This whole argument is one of the things I least like about this version of the Legion.

How long till LEGION CRISIS? Earth-ADV, Earth-Cockrell, Earth- Giffitz, Earth-5YL, Earth-Reboot, Earth-Prime... what happens when WORLDS COLLIDE?

Who will live? Who will die? And who will come back from the dead? And then die? And then come back one more time?

Who will be 'Jesus' in the homage to the Pieta? And who will be 'Mary'?

Why can't they adopt the poses of other famous statues on the covers? Why not that of Michelangelo's DAVID? Or Rodin's THE KISS?

I don't believe that statement is correct.

I believe it's been kind of implied that current DC superheroes do exist in the history of the 30th century, but there were ALSO comic books that told stories about them. It has never been said that superheroes did not exist in the LSH's 20th and 21st centuries.

There does seem to be a long period that did not contain any superheroes and that the club gained inspiration from the heroes of past (not just the comic books).

I have no doubt these heroes existed in the Legion's past (if they were just comics, it'd be an interesting twist though). Unless that one panel of the JLA in issue #1 was a big red herring and we were looking at a comic book. Still, there is now the issue that the old covers we've been seeing depict a particular time in DC history -- a time that was pretty much wiped out by the Crisis. We've been assuming it was Waid or Kitson being nostalgic, but could it tie into the new Crisis somehow? Could these covers reflect the upcoming changed DC timeline somehow?

What I think would be interesting is if the Legionnaires believed that the comics were descriptions of their past, but it wasn't in fact the past of their universe.

Or maybe the entire pre-crisis multiverse becomes a comic book universe within the modern DCU, as Jay was a fictional to Barry back in the day.

It would be neat if their inspiration was Superboy...the comic! If the only 21st century characters to show up are going to be in comics it would be worth it. Now if they only looked at more recent comics. wink

As for Barry reading Flash comics...i think Earth 2 superheroes existed in comic form in Earth 1 pre-crisis of course.

But seriously, I've wondered that if the JLA etc were real would there be comics about them like there are? Giving intimate details of personal life etc - obviously Hello and suchlike would permanently have them on the covers each month but to turn it around, we don't get comics about say David Beckham or Jerry Springer - do we??

I reckon we're with the Earth 1 Legion but that's just my initial feeling. The Earth Prime Legion gives lots of room for speculation of how they got their powers though.

:Hmm:
