The Good Cover Songs demand their own thread of equal stature. Plus, I'm a huge fan of good cover tunes. I'll start with a few:
Artist - Song (Original Artist)
Snake River Conspiracy - How Soon is Now (Morrisey) Nine Inch Nails - Get Down (Queen) Souxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence (Beetles) Tricky - Black Steel (Public Enemy)

Personally, I tend to like most of Siouxie's covers: Spellbound and The Passenger are both favorites of mine.
Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind (Willie Nelson) This one sometimes makes me forget the original.
Laibach - Sympathy for the Devil (Rolling Stones) Nine (IIRC... nine?) different kinds of brilliant.
Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart (Neil Young) A great debut from what's become the best mainstay in Britpop.
Kirsty MacColl with The Pogues - Miss Otis Regrets (Cole Porter standard) What a moody redo, suddenly the tale becomes haunting.

Anyone hear "Against All Odds" by the Postal Service? Great re-imagining of a classic song

The Sundays - "Wild Horses" Frente! - "Bizarre Love Triangle" Pet Shop Boys - "You Were Always on My Mind" Johnny Cash - "Hurt" Jimi Hendrix - "How Does it Feel?" Nirvana - "Man Who Sold The World" Smashing Pumpkins - "Landslide"

Pat Boone (& Mel Blanc) -- Speedy Gonzales (reportedly this was originally done by some obscure local band in South America... against his manager's advice, it became Boone's biggest-selling single! Yee-hah!)
