In the past couple of weeks, I have purchased the following CDs, which I am enjoying quite a bit:

Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook
Bette reunites with Barry Manilow for this collection of 11 Clooney standards. Included are "On A Slow Boat To China" (sung with Barry Manilow) and "Sisters" (sung with Linda Ronstadt). I love Bette singing big band songs, and every song on this CD is wonderful (including White Christmas, which I personally would have left off this CD).

Barbra Streisand: The Movie Album
What can I say? I would buy "Barbra Sings the Los Angeles Phone Directory." However, there's alot of really nice songs on this album, even though several of the songs (let alone the movies they come from) are unfamiliar to me. Highlights include "Moon River," "Emily" and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing."

Clay Aiken: Measure of a Man
Even though I never watch American Idol, I of course know who Clay Aiken is. This CD is filled with nice, borderline wholesome music. There's no bad language, no overtly sexual lyrics, but it's nice easy listening music. He's got a great voice, and it's no wonder he was a fan favorite on AI. Highlights include "I Will Carry You," "This Is The Night" (which was released as a single prior to the release of the CD) and "Measure of a Man."

I just bought 3 CDs

Deadbolt - Zulu Death Mask Deranged surf music kinda like the Cramps. Anyone who records a song like Jackals of Botswana or Swahili Bob is cool in my book.

999 - 999 & Separates Contemporaries of The Buzzcocks & The Stranglers

It certainly makes a better case for Zep live than The Song Remains The Same.

Last one I bought was Lava Baby, "Big Muff"

I bought it for the name only, but it turned out to be pretty cool.

Semi, Color By Numbers is great! I could never hate you for buying that. I'm a long time Boy George fan. Yes I said it, and I'm proud.

I'll vigorously second Streisand's "Movie Album." Especially the "limited edition" version that includes a second disc, a DVD with two videos of her singing in the studio (and clips from the original movies for those songs) and an audio-only interview.

She sings now from her middle register, not hitting the dramatic high or sustained notes that she managed until about 20 years ago. Yet she makes up for that with astonishing, and increasing, interpretive skill.

... I'm glad to have a place to say that. Every Streisand message board, without exception, is full of touchy and worshipful fans who would regard my comments above as a sizable trashing of their favorite. (And, artistically though not as a public person, still one of mine.)

... And why must a liking for both Midler and Streisand be prima facie evidence of gayitude? Can't such an admirer be, oh, I dunno ... bisexual? {g} Or even something else?

I just wish they'd hurry up and release "Live at Pompeii" on DVD. I've gone through it on VHS multiple times already.

I like Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand AND Clay Aiken AND Madonna and Mariah Carey AND Boy George and I'm STRAIGHT!!!!

I like many, many other music artists from many genres as well, and I'm always amazed how GLOBALLY, the type of music one likes seems to be some kind of indicator of what kind of person they are. It always comes up.

I don't care, though. I still carry on liking what I like, anyway.

That said, I really can't recommend a new cd, because it's been quite a while since I got one! I created another topic raving about the Down with Love movie. The soundtrack from that would be fun to have, I'm sure.

I doubt I'll buy the Streisand album. I have her "Essential" collection, so that'll do me for a while. Her voice IS like buttah! The Bette Midler album sounds very interesting. Is there a greatest hits collection for her out there? I'd rather get that. I have The Rose on cd, but that's it. I was a BIG fan of Clay's when he was on American Idol. He generally sang songs that I like a lot. In fact, I like his rendition of many of them as much as or better than the original. I saw him on tv the other morning, and the songs he sang were frankly, kinda dull. He delivered them very well, but they weren't very catchy. This mirrors a review I read about his album. This is a shame to me, because I think he's very good. Maybe there's another song on the album that will hit, though? We'll see.

I've been listening to This Mortal Coils' "It'll End in Tears" quite a bit at the moment and I'm tempted by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. the current single "Maps" is great.

Personally I can't stand Streisand or Mariah Carey and I have *incredibly* gay taste in music, so liking or disliking them doesn't mean anything really.

The Bette album is very good. Chris is a *huge* Miss M fan so had to have it as soon as it came out. Some great versions of great songs, and Barry Manilow showing that no matter how you might feel about his music he is a very good arranger (and very funny on On A Slow Boat To China. It's a very short album though. OK so the songs are short but in total it's only about half an hour long.

Last new album I got was Cher: The Very Greatest Hots (I think that's what it's called anyway). And when they say the greatest, they mea it. Two CDs and nearly fifty songs right from her early career with Sonny (quite a few S&C songs where most Best Ofs just have I've Got You Babe) right up to the present. I kinda feel that it's the Best Of album that she picked since not all the songs on it were big hits, but they really are the best. Very camp, very gay and very fabulous. Plus you get to hear on quite a few songs how good a singer she actually is. Yes she's very much a show-woman and the image and spectacle and stuff are as important as the voice but she has some great writers (Diane Warren is her favourite, and Diane Warren has said herself that Cher is one of her favourite people to write for) and can really sing fantastically well and with loads of emotion as well as belting out the soft rock and club numbers. Bizarrely there's also a version of it available that only has half the songs but almost exactly the same cover. A bit odd, so it's worth making sure you have the complete version.

Oh yeah, forgot Judy Garland. I guess I can't be called a friend of Dorothy, then, right?

COLOUR BY NUMBERS has a permanent home in my personal top 10 CDs of ALL TIME.

Black Money, Victims, That's The Way... absolutely incredible. And I haven't even mentioned the HITS from it.

I will absolutely be buying the new Nelly Furtado CD based on the strength of the first single and recent re-listens of her first CD.

I am tempted by the Dido CD, as I adore the song White Flag and that's after only hearing it a total of TWO times.

That's the way we'll destroy it baby
Shut it out shut it out
Thats the way we'll destroy it baby
Shut it out of your mind...
