as of Monday the 12th of February, i'm going back to school well .... sort of !!

i'm going to be starting at the Toni&Guy Academy !! and i'm training to be a hairdresser !!

after a lot of discussions over the last few weeks, PAUL and i have have come to the conclusion that if i was a hairdresser [ along with him being one ] we can progress even further with our working life !!

the course would normally take 13 weeks [ 5 days per week ] but i'm still going to be working in the salon, managing the staff and working the reception etc !!!

so i'm gonna be working 6 days every week for the forseable future .....

3 days at the ACADEMY [ Mon, Tue and Wed ] and then Thu, Fri and Sat in the salon !!

so the course will take about double the time, with me only doing 3 daysper week [ and then if i add HOLIDAYS into that ] and when i finish the course, if i've completed all the HAIRCUTS that are required !! before i can go into the salon as an 'official' hairstylist, and cut hair, i have to do a further 6 week 'VARDERING' course, and then i'll be ready for the salon !!

so ..... if all goes well, i will be a qualified hairstylist by about the start of DECEMBER !!

one of the big reasons behind this career change is, if we ever wanted move away from the UK into EUROPE or the US or even OZ, we could do it a lot easier with us both having a SKILL to go into the country with !!

ESSENSUALS / TONI&GUY have salons EVERYWHERE around the world !! and even if we didn't move away, we could even open our own salon [ on our own, and own 100% of it, as opposed to owning shares as PAUL currently does with our salon !! ]

i'll let you know how i get on after my first week ...... i actually really sacred !!!!

We always thought you were sacred too.

Personally, I'd be a bit scared to take the course knowing there was a ringer like you messing up the test curve. wink

Hey good luck and best wishes.

I wonder if they have sessions on "small talk?"

Really, the only reason I ever went to a "salon" for a hair cut (when I HAD hair) was for the pretty girls or the small talk. Otherwise, I just do it myself. Get what I pay for too.

eh, what's 'VARDERING' mean?

Why, Ultra-Matthew just gets ne plus ultra.

Obviously you know about customer care from prior retail and current salon work, and I seem to recall a mention of coursework in graphics or set design (or another artistic field?). Adding an artistic/technical skill sounds exciting! And impressive. Good on you!

Varder on, Matt! I'm surprised they can teach all that in only 13 weeks. You probably know quite a bit already from working in the Salon.

Good Luck with the course. I know how hard it is to go to school and work at the same time.

Oh and mastering the small talk is important. I have gone to a hair dressing school here in Boston for my last two hair cuts. One of the students that cut my hair started talking about drug rehab and neighbors of his who are into crime.

I also did not know what Vardering meant so I did a google search for "Varder" and found this:
1. varder

see
from Palomi, homosexual slang whose usage died out as homosexuality became more open during the 1960s

bona to varder your eek - good to see your face

But assuming that isn't what Toni & Guy meant, I searched for "Vardering" and came across a job site (for Toni & Guy in Austrailia) and they describe "varder" as Latin for "watch and learn".

Awesome, Matthew! Man, I should have gone into hair. My grandfather was the (small) town barber.....

There are so many haircutters/stylists that just don't "get it." It's like they've forgotten that the goal is to make the client look great! So that'd be my advice, be all about making your clients look great. I'm sure you already realize that.

I don't know if we've discussed it here, but I had a great time watching Jonathan Anton on "Blow Out" on BravoTV. He's such a character, so Hollywood, but he's SO into hair! (pronounced with a valley dude accent, kinda like "har")

Hey, never be afraid to try and do yourself better in life. I just changed jobs as of the first in January. Its tough, hard, and very confusing at times (I route about 300 loads in trucks every day) but its better pay for my family. And while money isn't everything, it sure makes it easier to live without stress and stomach ulcers, lol.

Enjoy the change and enjoy learning.

i suppose that is sort of what VARDERING means !!

it's just what the hairdressing industry calls their further training, before becoming a QUALIFIED stylist, working on the salon floor !!

i suppose 13 weeks doesn't sound too long, but it's very intense training, working on around 5 - 6 models per day [ once i get onto the CUTTING stage !! it's BLOW DRYING the first week or so !!

and it's gonna take me longer than 13 weeks, because i'm only going to be doing 3 days per week [ instead of 5 days per week !! ]

there are actually 14 'classic' haircut's that i have to pass to qualify .....

hey there !!

i guess i've been away from LW for quite a while now !!

my course is almost at it's end now, i have 10 days left to complete, from my original 24 weeks [ 120 days ] and it's gone really well, although it has taken longer than expected !!

i was due to finish it around DECEMBER 07, but after missing certain weeks because of holidays [ myself being away ] or my other receptionist being away or sick etc ..... it's taken until now, to have almost completed the course !!

so by middle of MARCH i will have finished and then on April 7th i start the 6 week [ final ] course [ which i will have to do full time / 5 days each week ] and then ...... finally i will be a qualified HAIRDRESSER !!!
