Oh, Brainiac definitely.
Complete with force-shield, city-shrinking, and referring to Superman as "Punyman".

I'd love to see Brainiac, but I'm sure we're getting Luthor again. bah

The animated series seemed to have no problem pairing Luthor with Brainiac and making that exciting. Brainiac would be my first choice for S2 as well, but since everyone is saying him, I'll also throw my hat in the ring for Metallo to at least make an appearance if not be the main villain (maybe as Luthor's muscle).
Or maybe they could just introduce Supergirl and make the film about Clark and Luthor battling for her soul in some way.

On another board, I suggested they could adapt Jack Kirby's 1st 6 issues of JIMMY OLSEN. It's wildly imaginative, it's got tons of ideas, concepts, characters, and has non-non-NON-stop action. Sounds more like a modern movie than a 1970 DC comic-- doesn't it??
And of course, this would be-- to me-- the best way to introduce Darkseid to a live-action movie audience, as a behind-the-scenes villain, and set up a spin-off film: NEW GODS!

Oooooh! DARKSIDE!!
How to introduce him on screen without him being all "hokey"?
He has a LOOOOONG backstory and a huge legacy to live up to and I'm worried that would get lost in the endless rewrites Holywood loves. He would probably end up coming across as a shouty computer effect.
So while Darkside would be great I think I'll go with Brainiac as well.
Be lucky

Personally, after so much Luthor, I'd much prefer BRAINIAC for the next movie. I'd also love Darkseid-- if, as described above, they could just do the "right" thing and adapt those 6 issues of JIMMY OLSEN as-is. Comics are a visual medium! A smart director could just take the existing stories and use them as storyboards without even making any changes. It's not some 8 or 12-page story we're talking about, it's a 6-issue action epic, the kind DC didn't start doing regularly until around a decade later. Didn't stories like BATMAN: YEAR ONE, GREEN LANTERN: EMERALD DAWN, etc. just seem like they were DESIGNED with film adaptation in mind? Bring on the Newsboy Legion!

I'd like Brainiac as the villain and a Supergirl introduction.

Brainiac would be the obvious choice, but it would be fun to see if they could feature Mr Mxyzptlk without it descending to juvenile storytelling.
The only character in all of literature who has been described as "badnass" while using the phrase "vile miscreant."

Zod. To me, no other villian comes close to Zod for ole' Supes.

Believe it or not, I'd like to see how the movie version of Superman does against the Joker.
Failing that, Darkseid is replete with possibilities!

In all seriousness, I think the Parasite would be a great villain for film.

Hmm... I don't suppose there's any way to do the Composite Superman in a plausible fashion, is there?

Boy, if only there was some way to get Ron Karr into the 21st Century...

This thread made me realize that, apart from Luthor and Brainiac, Superman doesn't really have many interesting villains. Metallo has never registered with me, and Terra-Man was too much a fad character, capitalizing on the western trend. Mxyzptlk is fun, but not a serious villain. (Besides, we've already had Richard Pryor for comedy relief.)
I'd suggest that the filmmakers create a new villain, but their last attempt (in Superman 4) was even worse than Pryor's inclusion.
But if we're going to import Darkseid, why not a villain closer to the Superman mythos, say the Time Trapper or Mordru?

Mxyzptlk might work as a true villain if you go with something like Byrne's re-interpretation of Mxyzptlk in post-Crisis. A reality-manipulator, looking for someone who can finally challenge him. And (don't have the comic handy for exact quote) it was noted that despite the objects popping back to normal once Mxyzptlk left... the people who lived through that mess were going to keep the psychiatrists busy for a while.

I've always thought it was a shame that the Ultra-Humanite kind of fell out of Superman mythology, just because of the lack of decent villains in the lore.

The Master-Jailer!
Seriously, Brainiac is the way to go, but I really like Prof's thoughts on Darkseid. Ultra-Humanite would be AWESOME.

Despite my defense of Mxyzptlk above, I would have to agree that Brainiac would be the better villain for the sequel. Considering how much of our lives are already dependent upon computers, a villain who could take advantage of that is seriously powerful.
Darkseid does have possibilities, but with as many troops as he could muster... that might be better used as a basis for the "movieverse" founding of the Justice League. Besides, the end of "Apokolips...Now!" from Superman:TAS can still bring tears to my eyes. I'm not sure they could improve on that story in the movies.

Yeah, the problem with Darkseid is that it seems like you'd really have to water him down to put him in a Superman movie.
The main problem with Mxyzptlk, as far as I see, is the sudden introduction of "magic" into what's mostly a science fiction/science fantasy franchise.
Brainiac fits best with the sci-fi aspect. Kandor would fit in well with the "am I alone?" aspect that was established in the last movie. Maybe Superman could recover the shrunken city but have now way of communicating with the inhabitants or something?

I have to second Spellbinder. Ron Karr all the way. Maybe an appearance of the Phanti-cats.

I'd have to say Brainiac. Besides, they could use him to pave the way for the third movie where Kal is visited by three teens from the future.

No Mxyzptlk! No way! I'd sooner take Bixarro.
Besides Brainiac, you can use the Fourth Worls without watering down ol crater-face. there's also the LSV, which fought Supes semi-regularly in the 60s. Solomon Grundy became a Supes villain in the 70s. Since they're following I/II continuity, theres no point i reusing the P-zone gang. There's Metallo, the Parasite, HIVE (Wolfman used them vs Supes too, during his pre-crisis gig on Action, at the same time hey were in Titans). I hesitate to mention the Atomic Skull.
The childhood friend Exnihil never had.
