The passé simple is used in formal writing; if it had been some other/spoken expression like "God created a real big mess here" you could use the regular past tense. I never really understood where the line was between using the regular past tense and the passé simple when writing, although I suspect "I farted in your general direction" might not be worthy of the literary passé simple.
