In a way not a surprising list since most of the films are the ones that were being touted as the probable nominees but also nice to see that teh prediction that smaller budget or less mass market appeal films have actually been given the nod this year. Does that mean the Academy has realised that just because tosh like Titanic has a huge budget and makes lots of money doesn't mean they're actually good films? Not sure about that, but it makes a change. Ok so the ones nominated aren't tiny films but they're not the blockbusters either.

That being said since most of them have only just come out here in the Uk or haven't even been released yet I shan't make predictions since I've seen almost none of them. smile

I'm hoping 'Good Night, Good Luck", the best film I saw all year, wins Best Picture, and I'd be thrilled if Dave Straitharn won Lead Actor (like Jacquin Phoenix too though) or George Clooney won for Directing.

I think there's a lot of great performances though and good artists nominated. Paul Giamatti was excellent in "Cindarella Man". Russell Crowe was too, and despite some people not liking him, the man can certainly act, and act extremely well. Still, he's been nominated three times and has one once already, so I'm not too concerned...

YAY for all the attention thrust upon Brokeback Mountain and Transamerica!

Memphis is all a-twitter over the Hustle & Flow and Walk The Line nominations, as both were filmed here.

Me, I haven't seen any of 'em yet. Won't stop me for pulling for BBM!

There weren't many surprises here, but I am *thrilled* Amy Adams got a nod for JUNEBUG. For me, that was THE performance of the year. She won't win of course--Rachel Weisz seems to have the momentum. I don't get it though, she was just fine in The CONSTANT GARDENER, but Adams and Michelle Williams in BROKEBACK are much more deserving, IMHO.
I would have liked to have seen some recognition for SHOPGIRL, another of my favorite movies from '05.

Was there a rules change in the Music Division?

Only three nominees for Best Original Song?

(and none of them are "So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish" frown )

So Long... probably doesn't count since even though the music is original the lyrics are based on existing lyrics, so it's kind of an adapted song if you see what I mean. Although with the Oscars you never know why something has/hasn't been included...

I've only seen two of the films (Brokeback Mountain and Walk the Line - I liked everything about Brokeback Mountain. I liked the acting in Walk the Line a lot, but thought the story was really boring.) So I'm just guessing for the most part or voting for whom I like. My list really has nothing to do with what was the best film or the best performance. It's just who and what I like. Somehow, I think this is probably the way many of the Academy members actually vote.

Best Picture
"Brokeback Mountain"
The others just seem boring.

Actor in a Leading Role
Heath Ledger, "Brokeback Mountain"
-or-
Joaquin Phoenix, "Walk the Line"

Both Heath and Joaquin were very good in their roles. (I really don't want Philip Seymour Hofman to win).

Actor in a Supporting Role
George Clooney, "Syriana"
Matt Dillon, "Crash"
Jake Gyllenhaal, "Brokeback Mountain"

(I can't stand Giamatti and Hurt, so any of the 3 remaining would be fine.)

Actress in a Leading Role
Judi Dench, "Mrs. Henderson Presents"
Felicity Huffman, "Transamerica"
or
Reese Witherspoon, "Walk the Line"
I like all three of these ladies.

Actress in a Supporting Role
Rachel Weisz, "The Constant Gardener"
I love Rachel Weisz. To me she's one of the most beautiful women in film today.

Finally saw "Transamerica"---Felicity Huffman was very good, but I think Reese deserves to win Best Actress. Watched "Junebug" again on DVD, and I'm even more certain that Amy Adams SHOULD win, but she may be to unknown. However, maybe the Oscar voters have seen the film now that it's on DVD--and of all the Oscar categories, Supporting Actress is the most unpredictable. I like Rachel Weisz very much, but I'd put her third in line for the trophy, because Michelle Williams was brilliant in "Brokeback Mountain." My boyfriend will be thrilled if Weisz takes it--he loves her.

I still think it's a shame that my two favorite actresses, Kate Winslet and Julianne Moore, don't have Oscars. There's still time though!

Knowjack, I'm with you on Julianne Moore, who is phenominal, but I think she'll get one eventually.

I saw "Walk the Line" recently and loved it. I really want Reece Witherspoon to win now. Up until now, I've never really cared one way or another for her, but I'm definately a fan now. I think Jocquain Phoenix is an excellent actor and wouldn't mind him winning at all. But I still think Dave Straitharn from 'Good Night, Good Luck' had one of the best performances I've ever seen in anything (movie, TV, on stage, etc.). "Good Night, Good Luck" was also the best movie I saw all year.

Semi, I think you're right about that being how the Academy decides too. laugh
