Or musical taste? I used buy new music all the time. Listening to the radio, watching MTV and VH1, and reading Rolling Stone for the best and new coming out so I could run out and buy it right away. Now, as I have grown older, I find I do not like much new music, and have gravitated back to the music of high school or just after. Is this normal, or have I become *shudder* boring?????

Though my best friend, who I believe is scared for me, let me borrow The Game CD. I have been a rap fan, and found I did like the entire CD, which in itself is unusual. Felt like I was rolling through Compton with my nine... So this gives me some I hope I suppose...

Like I was explaining to this hot (though older) guy I met last night, I attempt to keep up with current music, because I personally feel it helps to keep you young, in some ways.

Gwen Stefani is probably my favorite artist today for the simple reason that she's my age (mid/late 30s) yet her current material ("Hollaback Girl", ya'll, to name just one!) matches and perhaps rivals anything she did years ago with No Doubt, and appeals to the kids & young'uns of today!

Stay forever young! Keep up with current music!

So, my childish behavior and immature ways aren't enough to keep me young? Maybe my wife is right and it is just annoying...

Okay, so what is something worth checking out?

I like stuff like Duran Duran, Sting, Sade, Buddy Guy, Etta James, DMX, Eminem, AC/DC, Clapton to name a few...

thor, don't worry about musical tastes changing. I used to be all for the chart music but more and more these days I just ave no time for it. Maybe it's just the types of music that are big at the moment (rap, hip-hop, 'modern' R&B, naff manufactured boy and girl bands) that don't appeal to me or maybe it's just as I get older the music I like has changed. I'm only 29 now so not old by any stretch of the imagnation but I do find myself repeatedly thinking things along the lines of 'this is music? Now in my day you had proper tunes and words you could sing and singers that actually sang rather than shouting or having their voices manipulated a million and one ways'. I do still buy new albums but they're rarely by people who atually have big chart sucess (the nearest to that is probably Kylie).

Recently I've bought... oooh, forgetting best of albums or albums that are old but I only just bought, I got the new Shakespeare's Sister album (very, very good), the recent Joss Stone album (meh. Not as good as it should be)... actually that's it I think. The new albums I buy tend to be from people that i know I'll like (the last Annie Lennox album for instance which I bought without hearing anything of beforehand) but most of what I get is old.

I don't think it makes me feel any older really. I do feel old when i go to a club and hear things like the Spice Girls or Take That or any of that early 90s chart music and suddenly realise that those type of things are now 'classics' and stuff like the Eurythmics or Blondie are now considered really old classics in the way that i think of the Stones or early Bowie. That's scary. Growing out of chart music or current music I think happens to us all and it's happening sooner and sooner as time goes on and musical tastes change more and more quickly.

I haven't really paid attention to what is "popular" in the MTV/Rolling Stone sense in ages. With the advent of the internet, plus the relatively cheap cost of recording/distributing music these days, I think traditional media outlets are becoming increasingly less important as far as music goes. Most of the stuff I listen these days is stuff I heard about on websites or message boards of other artists I like. There's almost certainly music out there that you'd be interested in, it's just you may have to put some effort in to seeking it out yourself.

Actually, Amazon is a very good place to find good music on. If you search for artists that you know you like and then have a look at the bottom of the screen you should find a list of 'people who bought this also liked this' suggestions. Also more and more these days listings on Amazon have 30 second or so sound clips of a lot of tracks on the page for each album so if you're not sure what you're getting you can have a listen there even if you're not actually going to buy anything through Amazon.

Was out having lunch yesterday amd the place I was in had only 80's music playing. I had not heard some of those songs in like years and I could name everyone. By far the 80's had great music. I try to keep up with what is out today but it does not grab me. Case in point..in my truck I have Pat Benetars greatest hits in the CD player. See what I mean...I am an 80's music kinda guy.

I used to cook in a 60's themed diner. So they played 60's music there all the time. Was pretty cool to be grilling steaks to the Doors and Joplin!!! laugh

In the mid-90's I slowly found myself seeking out "obscure" bands. One of them, an all-girl band called The Friggs, turned out to be from my own town! Then in late '95 I wound up going to see them play at a bar in Philly. It reminded me of what I'd heard about The Beatles when they played The Cavern Club (before they got famous). I hit it off with their lead guitarist, and she started urging me to see other bands. The following month I went to see them again, and the headlining band was Los Straitjackets. Until that night, I really didn't know what "surf" music was. Since then I've found several HUNDRED "surf" bands, plus a multitude of "bar bands", girl bands, alternate-country bands-- ETC.

Radio? MTV? Who needs THAT crap? The stuff I find in bars and online and in obscure mail-order catalogs is 10 TIMES better than anything "popular" I've heard in the last decade (apart from John Fogerty, maybe). Picture buying an album by a band you've never heard a single note of, based just on the genre and name of the band-- and winding up LOVING every single song on an album. This never used to happen with "popular" artists. It's been happenning regularly for me with many "obscure" artists.

What can I say? Listen to what you like! There's PLENTY of great bands out there in all varieties of styles. You just gotta LOOK for 'em.

I found that even though I gravitate towards the stuff I grew up on (60's, 70's and 80's with a huge helping of Heart and Pink Floyd) I do enjoy modern music as well. Mostly hard alt rock but I ocassionally find myself liking a band like Maroon 5 or a solo artist like Jack Johnson.

Also, I have to second Lash's love of Gwen. Next to Amy Lee of Evanescence she is my favorite female artist currently.

Well like anything else, music is cyclical, what was, will be again, with a whole new twist. As a lover of the 80's sound, it's kind of neat listening to it be re-interpreted with a 21st cemtury twist. The Killers, The Bravery, Iris, Keane, all bands that pay tribute to the foundations put down by New Order, The Smiths, Depeche Mode.

And speaking of paying tribute to the past, Vic, if you ever watch the Scooby-Doo movies of late, most of that incidental/action music was remixed
from the original scoring - almost chord for chord.

thor I am with you. Tastes do change but for the most part I still like everything I used to save pop.

I went off just yesterday about all the soft rock bands with wierd names. I love Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand...and that alternative sound. But all those american bands with generic names like 8 Windows Below...that are just silly soft rock...all sound the same? ugh.

I also like rap...but I don't like that rap and hip/hop have taken over the radio stations, MTV, VH1 (remember when it was the 30 something yuppie station???), etc. It is way over exposed which makes me not like it. Another thing about rap is the rappers are so unlikeable.

Kanye West recently said some things on TV that people havent liked. I don't care about that. I saw him 2 years ago (via tv) at the MTV European Awards...he was an asshole to the guy interviewing. A snotty asshole. Since then I never liked him.

I have SIRIUS! satellite radio...it rocks.

Thor, you said your friend gave you the cd. That's the issue- the source of your music introduction. You obviously like new music, just not the stuff you been exposed to via VH1 or MTV or other popular sources. I think most folks here will agree, neither of those two formerly great stations provides a wide variety of music. And Rolling Stone, for all it's good, still prominently features established acts.

The people above me have all posted some great new music, stuff you would likely enjoy- and likely not find in the mainstream media.

You haven't become boring, your sources have just changed.

I think it's certainly important to listen to new music - just not necessarily current music. As many have been saying, it's a lot esier these days to discover music you've never heard of from any genre or era, so as long as you open yourself to discovering something that's "new to you", I think it's one of those things that makes life fun. Listening to the same music all the time will eventually dull you - people need new kinds of stimulation to keep their minds active and alive.

I've known so many people who only seem to like one genre-- or even one artist in one genre. One boss I worked for (an insane software writer) said he "only" liked Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and the Beatles' SGT. PEPPER (but nothing else by them).

Some of my faves of late are DESTINATION: EARTH! from that surf capitol of the world, Indianapolis (!!-- their sound combines surf, heavy-metal guitar & sci-fi schlock-- tons of fun); STEREOPHONIC SPACE SOUND UNLIMITED (a pair of producers in Zurich, Switzerland, who do all-instrumental stuff that sounds like 60's & 70's movie soundtracks); DASH RIP ROCK (they love to call themselves "the greatest bar band in the world"-- from New Orleans-- Good God-- they run the gamut from punk to rock to alt-country to country-western to novelty tunes to I'm not even sure what) and THE CHAINS (Montreal-- late-60's rock in sound, one of the SLICKEST-sounding bands I've ever seen or heard).

My latest "discovery" is THE SIRENS (Detroit), an all-girl band who recently did an EP titled "HELLRAISER And Other Sweet Songs".

I felt the same way about 4 years ago--that music had turned to crap, I couldn't get into what was on the radio, etc. Through the 80's and 90's I had prided myself on being ahead of the game--hunting down new bands, buying tons of cds, going to clubs and shows. Through working with the young people, I gradually got back to the point that I was interested again. I had completely missed great music like the Roots, Moby, Radiohead, Beta Band, and lots of other stuff.

One suggestion for those of you in a rut might be your local library. Most good libraries have an extensive selection of cds and they're all FREE. If you happened to be an unscrupulous person, you can download the borrowed music into iTunes and your iPod and listen to it all the time...

Here's one way I try to keep up with current stuff: logging onto my local radio stations' websites (pop & alternative). They have the current hot stuff listed in a top 20 (or whatever) format and it's a great way to find out "who sings that great new song"!

Actually reminded me a bit of early Cure stuff. Kanye West. Eh. NOt great not horrible....And Mike JOnes is annoying afterwhile...
