THE FIFTH ELEMENT is one of my all-time top fave sci-fi movies ever! The first time I saw it, I remember thinking it started out awful serious... but the second the story switched to NYC, it suddenly shifted gears and became immensely entertaining. In fact, it's my #1 FAVE Bruce Willis movie. He's so LIKEABLE in there, despite his character's flaws. In fact, I think it's safe to say that movie is my favorite movie of EVERYONE who appears in it. The priest, the General, the President, the scheming evil arms merchant... and, yes, even the lunatic radio personality "RUBY RODD!!!!!!!!" When he stepped onto the screen, it was like... "WHAT the F***???" The film had suddenly shifted gears AGAIN-- and never went back. But before I knew it, I even got to enjoy his antics. The way he screamed like a little girl during that shoot-out, or the way he stuttered so badly when he saw the time-bomb attached to the door...

And of course, about half a minute into the NYC sequence, I thought, "Damn if this doesn't look like MOEBIUS designed the whole thing." Critics when it came out went on and on and ON about the guy who did the costumes on the film. Not one of them mentioned the production designer who did EVERYTHING else... Jean Girard. DAMN. It was Moebius!!!

I wish Hollywood had gotten Jack Kirby to design a movie like that...

"For me, I can't stand Kevin Costner. I think a friend of mine nailed it pretty well one time - he's one of those actors who are the same in every role, the first few times you see a Costner movie (Untouchables, Field of Dreams), they're not too bad, but then you realise it's always the same character transitioning from movie to movie. And as his ego and clout grew, this was ususally to the detriment of the movie. My Father-in-Law loves him, probably for the same reasons I don't, and I've had to excuse myself from several painful movie sessions (especially his sports themed ones which amplify the problem even more)."

I tried so hard to give him a chance with THE UNTOUCHABLES. But his voice did not project. And there were such major, overhweming, insurmountable problems with the script... I look back and feel the film is an insult to the memory of the Robert Stack TV series. (The Tom Amandes TV series several years later was MUCH better on every single level.)

Since then, I've come to despise Costner for something he has no control over... he reminds me of the guy who had me FIRED from the only decent job I ever had in my life. They're like dead ringers. Scary.

So... the only Costner film I've been able to stand is one where he plays a TOTALLY viscious, murderous scum... 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND. Legend has it, they wanted Kurt Russell to play the villain. He asked, "Could I play this OTHER part instead?" So what you wound up with was the 2 competing "Wyatt Earps"-- the "good" and the "bad" one-- as the film's hero and villain. One, a crook who goes out of his way NOT to hurt anybody, the other, a guy who goes out of his way to hurt as many people as he can, and enjoys doing so. Needless to say, I REALLY enjoyed the ending of the movie...!

This coming weekend's release of He's Not That Into You reminds me that Drew Barrymore makes me sick. She's so annoying with that whole "Look at me, I'm so cutesy-kooky" schtick both onscreen and offscreen. And, although I know that what I'm about to say is mean and shallow, I'll say it anyway: her face has been so messed up by her heavy drinking that no amount of makeup can hide its horrific ugliness.

It's almost to the point where I won't even go into a cineplex that's playing a Kevin Costner movie for fear I'll hear him "acting" as I pass by a set of closed doors.

Jessica Simpson is just awful beyond description, so I won't even try.

Should the two of them make a film together it could very well melt screens.

The only thing I've seen Jessica Simpson in, I enjoyed... it was a couple episodes of THAT 70'S SHOW where she played an airheaded California beach girl who frustrated Michael Kelso because she "wouldn't put out"!

Well I can't say I disagree with you all here on what you say. I wouldn't say I dislike a lot of actors/actresses, but there are some I can't stand for some reason...we all have our reasons and they're going to be different among us no matter what, us being different people and all. that being said...

I don't want to see anything with Dakota Fanning in it, although I have to suck it up and see Coraline, because Neil Gaiman wrote it and he's just awesome, so I have a reason there...I just don't see how anyone thinks she can act. And I saw a picture of her from Push and she looked like Heath Ledger's Joker only without the bright colors.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why people love Angelina Jolie. She's a decent actress and all, but I wouldn't ever say she's drop-dead gorgeous. Mr. & Mrs. Smith was alright, I think Brad Pitt's funny moments coupled with Vince Vaughan was it's only saving grace. As for Wanted, I thought it was a decent action movie and all, but aside from any other things there, I have to say there were parts in it where she looked decent, but then it could be the very next frame where she looked like she has a man's jaw. I just don't know which way to go with her.

Sorry if any of you disagree with me, those are just two that crossed my mind.

I tend to avoid Will Ferrell movies. I just don't find him funny. The same goes for Steve Carrell and (sometimes) Jim Carrey.

I did kinda like Steve in Get Smart, but not enough to watch it over and over.

Will Ferrell I think overdoes everything he does.

Jim Carrey overdoes his characters alot, but sometimes it's not bad. The Mask I liked... Ace Ventura not so much. I like his tamer roles, like The Truman Show and Liar Liar. I don't like when he "Jim Carrey's" a role to death.

You are too kind. She's a HORRIBLE actress with even less dramatic range than Madonna, and she looks like The Creature From The Black Lagoon in a wig.

I highly recommend "Stranger Than Fiction" if you want to see Will Ferrell toned down and playing an actual person. Same for Jim Carrey in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" - *great* movie!

I'd say she's suffering from what i call hollywood arrested physical maturity. She looks gaunt because she is trying to maintain a weight that only works on 18 year old girls. As women age, they look better with a little more meat on their bones.

As for acting....i don't guess anyone really watches her for actual acting. As to the body, if that was the rear shot of her from wanted, that seems to be going away as well.

Someone once told me that the face and body changes every 7 years. Look at elizabeth taylor. She pretty much fit the pattern. Some of those 7 years were awkward and unattractive, some were attractive for her years.

Jolie seems to have had too much collogen, maybe a little to much botox, etc.

But in hollywood circles i guess you could say she has that "it" factor. I don't get it, much like gwen paltrow. Blandly attractive, but i don't get any real heat off her.

At the top of my list would be Mike Meyers. ABSOLUTELY cannot stand him I would say this about almost everyone who came out of Saturday Night Live (at least in the 90s) but not all. He is THE worst (I could go on for paragraphs about how much I despise him and his brand of sophmoric "comedy").

I would have to echo a number of other folks here and add a few: Julia Roberts, Robin Williams, Adam Sandler, Will Farrell, Kirsten Dunst, Kevin Costner, Angelina, plus: Hugh Grant, Steven Segall, Martin Lawrence, Melanie Griffith, Sandra Bullock, Owen Wilson, Lindsay Lohan, Beyonce, and yes Madonna Ciccone.

There are a few I generally tend to avoid but who, with the right director can pull off a decent performance (strangely, most of them are scientologists) such as : Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Keanu, Travolta, Ben Stiller, Wayans Brothers, Juliette Lewis.

Of course there are many more really not worth mentioning. Most are more famous for being famous than their unimpressive film careers.

While I don't literally avoid his movies, it does bug me how many accolades Bill Murray collects for just blatantly playing exactly the same damn guy, over and over and over...

Jack Nicholson

Jim Carrey

Woody Allen

Gwyneth Paltrow

Madonna

Steisand's later vanity films (like Yentl and Nuts) were awful, but she was fabulous in her early films. I loved "The Way We Were."

Someone explain Brad Pitt to me. The movies he has been the solo lead in have for the most part flopped, except for Mr. and Mrs. Smith. and even then he was just the male lead in a double billing. If you look at his solo stuff...it has tanked regularly.

yeah, the oceans stuff did well, but he was ensemble. The guy has as much charisma as an igneous formation on a plain.

Unless there is someone else in the movie that i want to see, i don't see his stuff. Troy was awful, i haven't seen any of his "western" stuff, i avoid his "africa" stuff" like the plague...

I really don't get it. I know he's "pretty" according to my wife's friends, but he's soggy noodles at acting.

Brad Pitt was great in Fight Club (where he had to carry one of, IMO, the worlds flattest, least compelling, sleepwalking-through-his-part actors, Ed Norton) and if they had recast Interview with a Vampire to have Brad as Lestat, Antonio as Louis, some random kid as Armand and Big-Nose Couch-Jumper Cruisinski as Sir-Not-Appearing-In-This-Picture, it would have been exponentially better.

Brad's better in shows where he doesn't take his clothes off, IMO. It was a grim sign so early on in Troy that they kept showing him off, as it was a portent that the movie was going to be little more than eye-candy.

Nothing wrong with eye candy, per se. I will freely admit that I like watching good looking women, more than a few that can't act. But while they can't act, they have fun with their roles and do more than flash a little t and a.

But pitt is just flat to me. I rank him in the leagues of Gwenth Paltrow. Pretty, nice to look at, but not engaging. You don't get anything off him. If he's supposed to be angry, it doesn't come across on the screen. It's like "Okay, i'm supposed to be angry here, so lets put on the angry face."

Put him beside a guy like Robert Mitchum and he'd be the guy Mitchum bitchslaps for info.

Now, thats just me. Obviously, other people really dig him. Me, i just don't get it.

Pitt was good in Burn After Reading, but that may be a case of the Coen Brothers just knowing who works well with who. His character was just a vapid egotistical jock who got in over his head. So make of that what you will...

I usually like Angelina Jolie. She's also in one of my favorite movies of all time Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

He doesn't appear much these days, but still I dislike Sylvester Stallone with a passion. Aside from Rocky, I never got the sense that he was acting. It was more like he was earning money. Plus, had there been no Sylvester there wouldn't have been a Frank.

Even Steven Segeall had a couple of movies I could watch with my husband.

But only a couple.
Everything of Segeall's that Chuck has rented in the past 5 years have caused me to actually run from the room a few minutes into them.
Van Damme usually gets the same reaction.

I stay away from Farrell, Carrey and Sandler most of the time, but every once in awhile, Carrey or Sandler will do something amazing.

Of the big names, I don't see much of the 2 that are always playing in mobster movies.
I think it's more the genre though, than the actors, Pacino and Niro.

I like Brad Pitt, I'm afraid.
I find him very expressive and fascinating.
Go figure.

I don't mind Drew Barrymore as an actress, I guess, but her jaw always gets in the way of the characters she plays, imo.
If I were her, I'd get it changed, for sure.

I think she's already tried to have her jaw changed...by the same doctor who changed Jennifer Grey's nose.

I think Drew is about to redeem herself.

web page Grey Gardens Trailer
This looks pretty amazing. I'm a little bummed it's on HBO. Not being a millionaire, I can't afford cable.

If you haven't seen the original Grey Gardens or the subsequent the Beales of Grey Gardens documentaries do yourself a favor.

Nicholas Cage is in more awful movies than any other actor I can think of. Travolta gives him a run for his money, but gets big props for Grease and Pulp Fiction. Sandler is getting close to Cage territory. Barrymore I give credit for being consistently funny on SNL. Pitt is pretty good in ensemble casts (Legends of the Fall), not too great when carrying the film by himself. Don't really get Jolie either. I like Julia Roberts! There are too many model lookalikes out there. She's beautiful, but in a nonplastic way.

The thing about Cage is that he's in a lot of movies that sound like they might be good, but aren't.
