Okay, everyone knows the story of Kathrine Hepburn that likes old movies like I do. At one point, it was said that her name on a movie actually kept people away from it. Cary Grant went to bat for her over the Phillidelphia Story and the rest is history.
And honestly there are a few actors/actresses that guarantee I don't see movies. Right or wrong, it just is. So, here are some of the people that keep me away from movies.
1. Tom Cruise- now, before you think it was the whole couch bouncin' hatin' on Brooke Shields thing...it wasn't. That just confirmed it. I knew he was a flake long before that and havent' watched any of his movies since I made the mistake of seeing Top Gun. I did do a date movie of Mission Impossible...but I slept through most of it.
2. Barbara Streisand- Yes, at one point in time (main event) I thought she was hot, but honestly, I wasn't thinking with my brain. Then I saw her real personality, and how gonzo nuts she is, and it just left me cold (no, i'm not talking about her politics, that happened before she started all that).
3. Jane Fonda- Sorry. NO! I've read the reports by former american POW's...and this woman should be in jail, not making movies.
4. George C. Scott- I don't know his politics or care, the guy just ensures that i dont' want to see the movie he's in.
5. Jessica Alba- the woman cannot act. She simply can't. When talented actresses around the world are lossing roles so that she can be in things like Fantastic Four...sump'in ain't right in the world. John Byrne caught a lot of flack over his blond latin hooker comments, and while i agree that she looked off, i won't go so far as to say she looked like a hooker. But she was definately not right for the charcter.
6. Frank Langella- He plays the same character every time he "acts". It's repetative, and boring, and repetative, and boring, and repeta...you get the picture.
7. Rosie O'Donnell- I saw her in one of her stand up routines before she made it big as a "talk show" host, and then went off the rails, and I took an instant dislike to her. She went on a riff about southern nurses saying that a sample was needed and using the word 'tinkle' instead of a more profane one. I thought to myself..."Yeah, we southern boys do like our women to sound like women, with a bit of class. I personally don't want a woman that sounds like a fleet week $2 hooker." She gave me a bad image of northern women for years until i realized she was bugnuckin' batcrap.
8. Leonardo DiCaprio- I cannot buy him in toughguy roles. It just ain't happenin'. He can do other stuff, but anything that posits the idea that he's tough...sorry, it just ain't happening. Yes, i know the story about Djiamon and what happened during Blood Diamonds, or whatever it was, but I dont' buy it.
9 and 10 are not actors, they are directors.
9. Roman Polanski- child molester. Thats all that needs to be said.
10. Woody Allen- creepy wannabee child molester that was only saved by the statutes.
Damn you, you kids! Get off my lawn or I'm callin' tha cops!

Oliver Stone (Director). I think I've been let down everytime I've ever seen one of his films.

I loved Fonda's performance in Sir ! No Sir ! Seriously, it's pretty rare for me to ignore an entire spate of films because of one actor or actress-- with the notable exceptions of such stalwarts as Madonna and Adam Sandler. Also, I didn't literally avoid the entire Lethal Weapon franchise. I just dozed off during one of them and then never noticed that there were others. There's a difference.

For me it is Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell. I don't think either is all that funny. Carrey's main talent is his mugging ability. And Ferrell's character is always "I'm so stupid and obnoxious, so laugh at me".

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spottless Mind" and "Stranger than Fiction" respectively are both pretty good movies (Sunshine's actually really good). Both actors carry those movies very well, and against their usual typecast roles.

Cleome, I actually wrote a how to speech for speech class in college titled "Killing the Madonna". It was a tongue in cheek thing about all the DJ's that played her incessantly. Cannot stand her to this day. Have never seen any of her movies and will not. I even fast forward through Die Another Day when she is on screen.

I think it suffered from not knowing whether it was supposed to be serious or a comedy. And I have heard good things about "Sunshine", but Carrey still keeps me away from it.

Tom Hanks. He was funny in Bosum Buddies, and I liked Splash (if only to see Daryl Hannah with minimal clothing), but I really haven't liked anything he's been in since, and I'm still pissed off about his anti-D&D movie, Mazes & Monsters.
Julia Roberts. When she smiles, you can not only see her gums, but also where they attach to her skull. It looks like her entire face is about to peel back off of her head. She scares me. (Allison Mack, from Smallville, also shows some gum when she smiles a big smile, and on her it looks cute, so it's not just gums I'm scared of, it's Julia Roberts and her panicking-horse- about-to-trample-you smile.) Yes, I will avoid a movie just to avoid seeing her. Some people fear clowns, others fear public embarrassment, I fear people whose faces peel back to reveal their terrifying skulls. And outies. Those creep me out, too. Julia Roberts probably has an outie. She probably has *several...*

Sarah Silverman is terrible. I'm shocked she has a career.
Another actress who I avoid is Cameron Dias. She has yet to show any real depth to her acting, despite one great moment in Vanilla Sky. In regards to her attractiveness she always appears so unkempt and sloppy--she was so hot in the Mask a decade ago. Now her appearance takes away from her acting.

Set, I agree on both counts.
Tom Hanks is very overrated. I always thought it unfair that of the two stars of Bosom Buddies, the less talented (and less handsome) Hanks made it really big, but Peter Scolari hasn't had a major success since Newhart.
As for Julia "The Gaping Maw" Roberts, she's just creepy. I haven't liked her in anything since Steel Magnolias.
The only character in all of literature who has been described as "badnass" while using the phrase "vile miscreant."

I don't really get avoiding actors.
There are lots of actors who do absolutely nothing for me sure, but if I avoided every Tom Cruise or Jim Carrey movie I'd never have seen the fantastic 'Minority Report', 'Eyes Wide Shut', 'Eternal Sunshine...' or 'The Truman Show'.
The only actors I avoid (though it's actually more a case of them avoiding me by picking such shit movies to star in) would be the people like Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey and whoever who coast along making films of zero substance with no acting talent required time after time.
I like actors who take risks and chances with their craft and, love them or hate them, a lot of the actors mentioned in this thread so far at least do that for me.

I even fast forward through Die Another Day when she is on screen. The worst thing about Madonna is that she and her crap movies followed me across the country. There was no escape. When I was in college the first time, Downtown NYC was going nuts because she was there filming Desperately Seeking Susan. Fast forward several years to Portland. She was filming Body of Evidence in downtown Portland, including right on the grounds where I had transferred to school. Can't speak for Madonna herself, but we students hated the film people. They got in our way for what felt like weeks, and they were incredibly rude. Susan was actually a tolerable film. Not memorable, but not unwatchable, either. Got dragged to it once on a date and didn't have the heart to argue the guy out of it. Have never seen Body, but nobody I know who's seen it has a kind word for it.

You've got to overcome that aversion, Quis, and get thee to a video store pronto. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a beautiful film... one of maybe three that I've seen more than once in a theatre. My own avoidances include: Hugh Grant (nebbishy leads in romantic comedies just don't do it for me.) Ben Affleck (please close your mouth, that's not a substitute for "emoting".) Nic Cage (with the notable exception of my guilty cult favorite: "Vampire's Kiss". This is the movie that "American Psycho" wishes it had been.)

1. Nicolas Cage - Can't stand the scary , intense, blank stare thing that he does 2. Will Smith - I think he's actually an extremely gifted actor, just chooses to do really bad movies 3. John Travolta - His smirking and mugging really turn my stomach 4. Chris Tucker - That high pitched shrieking, bug eyed way of his is like watching a modern day minstrel 5. Tom Cruise - I've only liked one of his movies & that was Risky Business 6. Shia Labeouf - He seems like a real d@&che for some reason 7. Jennifer Lopez - Couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag 8. Jessica Simpson - Duh! I smile to make up for my lack of any screen presence 9. Any Wayans Brother - I just don't get them

To be fair, Streisand did appear in ONE great movie: the comedy classic What\'s Up, Doc? (which belongs on anybody's must-see list). I'll agree, she hasn't done anything recently that anyone should get excited about.

It does seem to be a truism for me that any actor, no matter how much I otherwise loathe them, has one good movie out there somewhere.
I can't stand Adam Sandler, but Fifty First Dates was a pretty funny movie.
Chris Tucker's hysterics leave me cold, but Ruby Rod in The Fifth Element was *hilarious.*
The entire Wayans clan could go into a wormhole and be retroactively removed from continuity and I'd be a happier person, but there's also The Last Boy Scout, which manages to probably be the best Bruce Willis movie since the original Die Hard and, not that this is any great accomplishment, the best appearance by a Wayans brother.
Nicholas Cage fill me with 'meh,' and yet The Rock was an awesome, awesome film. (Although that could be Sean Connery and Ed Harris saving the day, actorwise.)
Even Ben Affleck has appeared in a watchable film, once in his life, in Good Will Hunting.
And Jessica Alba's movie career may be a train-wreck, but she was pretty good in the Dark Angel series.

For me, I can't stand Kevin Costner. I think a friend of mine nailed it pretty well one time - he's one of those actors who are the same in every role, the first few times you see a Costner movie (Untouchables, Field of Dreams), they're not too bad, but then you realise it's always the same character transitioning from movie to movie. And as his ego and clout grew, this was ususally to the detriment of the movie. My Father-in-Law loves him, probably for the same reasons I don't, and I've had to excuse myself from several painful movie sessions (especially his sports themed ones which amplify the problem even more).

Although, No Way Out was a pretty good movie, despite the Costner.
