So I'm taking a break from packing to sneak a peek at the boards, and to express my general frustration with packing. It's so boring, and it never seems to end. Some of the stuff I find I just stare at and wonder when did we buy that? And why did we think we needed it? It's my job to get us all packed. I'm not sure why this is, but that's the way it's always been. Then there's the nerves from knowing we are less than a week from moving into the new place, and knowing that it isn't finished yet. Anyone been through this? The builder tells you don't worry, we'll have it done in a couple days. What does that mean? We gave notice and have to be out of the apartment at the end of the month. Our closing is tenatively set for Tuesday or Wednesday. Our home has been designed to accomodate my ill and elderly parents, but so far any way for them to get into the house has not been completed. Great extra-large shower with wheelchair roll-up (no lip on the stall) and then a benchseat and bars all around the inside. The hallways are 16" wider than a standard modern hallway. The doorways are 45" instead of 30", but right now there is no ramp in the garage to the back door, and not even any stairs. Scott keeps telling me they'll get it done. Also not completed is the stairway to get in the front door, and a walkway out to the sidewalk. The entire "yard" area is still the dirt lot and construction debris. If I had any nails left I would be biting them. Thanks for letting me de-stress for a minute. I know I have a lot to be thankful for with being able to build this house for my parents, and mostly, for the fact that Scott loves me enough to allow them to come live with us. A year ago you never could have told me both my parents would have cancer and that this whirlwind would even be happening.

moving does indeed suck. I'm there in spirit lending my support SG.
everytime I've moved I've found that the worst part is packing, the unpacking is fun - trying to find new homes for things is a game for all the family!
Scott sounds like a top bloke but then I'm sure you deserve it!
Best of luck for the move.
Legion Worlds NINE - wait, there's even more ongoing amazing adventures? Yup, and you'll only find them in the Bits o' Legionnaire Business Forum.

Hey SG, I went through the same b.s. when I had bought a house in Vegas a few years back. In my experience, the builders are pretty good at getting a lot of unfinished tasks done in a relatively short amount of time. I think they get off on putting home buyer's though unneeded stress. Check your contract, there may be a clause that states the builder may have to pay a penalty to you if it is not completed on time. Best of luck to you!
You have any Italian in you? You want some?

Good point-- they may also have to pay to put you guys up if the house isn't ready by the time your lease is up. Hopefully, it won't come to that, but you may want to check your options for holding them accaountable.

My mother was terminally ill in 1993, when we moved from the house we'd been living in for more than 20 years to a new place. The new house was nice -- it was roomier and even had a fire place. But Mom didn't get to enjoy it for long. Her illness worsened and she passed away just five months after we moved.
I'm grateful, however, for the experience we had in moving: Going through decades of old stuff, deciding what to keep and what not. Moving was a family affair, as we were assisted by my brother, who was living on his own, and my cousin, who, being a teenager, rarely contributed to anything in those days. Mom and Dad had also looked for at least two years before finding that house, so Mom got to realize an important goal of hers.
I don't wish to make light of moving, or cancer, for that matter. But when you and Scott look back on this in years to come, Caroline, I'm sure you'll remember it as a special time in your lives, whatever problems arise now.

Saturn Girl, I agree, packing truly sucks. But you know what the really neat thing is? It's unpacking. Especially if there is a bit of time between packing and unpacking. When I unpack, I get a special thrill at seeing all my STUFF again. Sometimes I have forgotten what I had. So its like a big old Christmas once again. I hope you really like your STUFF and when you unpack it, I hope you both feel like a two kids in a comic book store. Anyway, that how I always feel. Best of luck in your move.

SG, it sure is a lot of work to move. At least you probably won't be moving again for awhile! Remember, a lot of these details can either be solved temporarily (like building a quick ramp up to the doors) or ignored for now (like the dirt yard). Just get moved! We lived in this house for 3 months with no running water, no stove and no fridge. A lot of things can be finished up gradually. ((((( FC

Sending supportive hugs! Moving is a major chore, and my partner and I have sworn we're hiring movers next time no matter what the cost. Think of it as a great time to downsize. All those things you don't know why you ever bought? Chuck 'em now! I dropped gobs of stuff in my last move. And when I got to the new, bigger place, I couldn't figure out how even what I kept could possibly have fit in the old one. I think Disney's Mary Poppins has some excellent advice: "In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. Find the fun and SNAP -- the job's a game. And every task you undertake becomes a piece of cake -- a lark, a spree, it's very clear to see ..." and you know the rest. Hang in there! Eric

Chin Up, Caroline! In a few short weeks, you'll be able to look over your spruced-up, de-boxed, unpacked and sparkling new house and smile. (Until then, take deep breaths... )

Hang in there, you two! I'm going to be moving soon myself, and I'm already feeling the pangs just anticipating it. The last two times I've moved, it took me weeks to pack and even longer to unpack once I arrived. I believe I once had unpacked boxes lying around my living room for FIVE MONTHS after I moved into my new place.

You guys and gals are great! Caroline is a real trooper, putting up with me having to work while she is off the next two weeks to concentrate on this move. I have to work through Wednesday so can't be home to help as much as I should. But we'll get through this, if nothing but to hurry up and get back to this great bunch. You all do mean a lot to us.

Hi Icey and everybody!!! Thanks for asking about the move. It still sucks, but it is for such a good goal, and we can get through it together so it will be fantastic. Right now for energy we're drinking Arizona brand green tea energy drink with ginsing and caffeine. So sorry to hear about your flu Icefire. Be good to yourself, slow down and get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids. Stay cozy warm. We are on our way out to check on the house again. They were finishing up the brickwork and laying the sod today. Our final walk-thru is Monday at 9AM and then we close Monday afternoon. Figure we will be up all night moving what we can by car, and then Tuesday morning the movers will show up. While the movers are working we will have our four cats locked in the master bathroom with their potty box and food and water. Three of them are really high maintenance emotional-wise, and we just can't wait for the ride to the new house with three of them screaming. I will be holding the one who is my 'baby.' He gets wrapped in a blanket like an infant and just shakes. I look at this mess, and I know this is happening, but it's still hard to believe. It was a vacant lot on May 31st, they broke ground on June 16 and dug the basement June 19th, the day mom had surgery. Now it's a real house. Unreal somehow. Anyway, back to work. Miss you guys a lot, and with Brent's tragedy, everyone on the Board has been on my mind today. Loves!!!!

I almost forgot, Pov, I meant to tell you that my 'dream' giant bathroom for my parents came out pretty close to perfect. The doors all over the house are oversize for wheelchairs, but their bathroom has a giant shower with a bench seat which I mentioned before. Now that it's done, they added a wall mounted sink so dad can wheel right up under it to wash, and there are bars on either wall beside the toilet. We had them put in a higher rise toilet so they didn't have to get one of the plastic risers that sometimes shift. There is room to turn 360 degrees in the wheelchair, whereas at their old house dad had no clearance at all and often couldn't make it in time.
We actually met the carpenter who put in the ramp in the garage to the back door for us and he was a sweetie. We explained about my ill parents. He got a big smile and said how great that was and that he was going to do a real good job for us. The finished job is a really sturdy ramp with great handrails which are almost nice enough to be on someone's stairway inside a home.
Hey, let me also add, if all you guys were helping, we'd not only get the job done quick - we'd have one helluva party as well!!! Crank the tunes and rock the move!!! Okay, Scott's cracking the whip now, and not in a good way. (LOL) Talk to you later!!

All the best wishes, Caroline. Your mentioning of what you're able to do for your parents makes me more than a bit jealous. I had to do extensive repairs and updates to my own parents' house, but I didn't have them around to enjoy it all.
Good luck with the final push, and I hope that Legion World will be here when you two get back to the Net. If it isn't, do e-mail us all about how it turned out.

Not long now, Scott & Caroline! It sounds like a fantastic house.
Have you tried Rescue Remedy for the cats? It often helps to take the edge off the screaming jeebies when they have to travel. (Good for people anxiety too.)
Just think, this time next week, the worst will be over. You can unpack gradually and enjoy the place.
