I grew up watching THE ALVIN SHOW. My Dad actually bought me several of their albums when they first came out!
Many years later, I picked up the first few albums by Ross Jr.... CHIPMUNK PUNK (great stuff), URBAN CHIPMUNK (lots o' fun) and what proved to be my all-time favorite, CHIPMUNK ROCK (they actually did a cover of Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker" that I liked better than the original-- yeah, I know, it's nuts, but there you go...)
Several years later, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS debuted... and I found myself SEVERELY disappointed on every single level. "Better" animation does not a "better" show make, when the writing sucks, and they didn't even have music segments, like the original show did. (sigh) But that's me.
Incidentally, my favorite of the original albums is AROUND THE WORLD WITH THE CHIPMUNKS-- although the first 2 Christmas albums, CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHIPMUNKS and CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHIPMUNKS VOL.2 are to this day my all-time fave Christmas albums.
Now if you really wanna hear something strange, go find a copy of the 45 "The Trouble With Harry" / "A Little Beauty", by "Alfi & Harry". It's really Ross Sr., about 3 years BEFORE he did "The Witch Doctor". In fine print it says, "Inspired by the Alfred Hitchcock Film". How bizarre is this? It has nothing whatsoever to do with the film, apart from the title. Some years back, when I finally saw the movie REAR WINDOW (during its restoration reissue), I couldn't help but notice that the piano player who lived in the next apartment was... David Seville!
