Sorry people, but I need help NOW!!!
I'll keep this short and sweet. I went to the country today and mowed. Wes and Shadow (my two kids/dogs) started digging and cutting up around the tractor shed. No biggie, as they've done it before. But this time, it was different.
Apparently a skunk had been around at some point, so now I've got two dogs that smell like skunk. Luckily, as near as I can tell, it's fairly isolated to their head area. But that doesn't help the retched stench. I've used Febreze in the truck to help control some of that stench, as well. And I've left the windows open. (Grife, I hope it doesn't rain.)
Anyway, tomato juice ain't cuttin' it. I need some way to get rid of the smell. NOW.
Thanks for all your help in advance.

Oh no, you poor thing!!!!! Your babies!
Aside from the smell, the oils in the skunk blast can irritate their eyes and ears and all muscous membrane tissue.
TOmato juice is a classic, tons and gallons of it, and also buttermilk. Good luck with this crisis. So sorry it happened.

The thing is, I don't think they skunk hit THEM. I think they just got tangled up in the grass or in stuff in the shed that the skunk hit.
I hadn't considered buttermilk. I'll be gettin' a couple of gallons of that in the morning. Right now, they are both outside. And that's where they will stay. I just hope the neighbors don't mind too much.

As an alternative, you could go back and have the offending rodent spray YOU, too. That won't help Wes and Shadow, other than misery loving company, but maybe it'll help ya get used to the stench...? to you, buddy, and I hope you get the pups cleaned up ASAP.

If the buttermilk don't work, most pet stores have dog shampoo specifically made to combat skunk-odors.

Okay ...... Saturn Girl - The buttermilk helped mute the smell a bit. You can tell it's still there, but it doesn't cause you to retch when you walk out the back door. So that helped TREMENDOUSLY!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I've also followed up with a bath and a splash of orange oil. I figured maybe I could fight oil with oil. But it's now smells a bit like a skunk farted after eating an orange.
Pov - I WILL be sending a kitty your way. Please take care of it. It likes to be held. And ignore that white stripe down its back.
Kid Chaos - D'OH!!!!!!! I'm callin' my vet first thing in the morning!!!!! I hadn't even CONSIDERED that!! And with this being a country vet, I'm sure he's got *SOMETHING* that would help!! Thanks!!!!
Kid Prime - I'm sendin' Wes and Shadow to spend a week with you. =Þ
Oh yeah .... Febreze in the truck was just NASTY!!!!!!! It smelled like a sickly combo of skunk and Febreze. I'll be airing that thing out for a while. Luckily, if I keep the air conditioner on MAX, it helps to keep it from stinkin' tooooo badly.
Thanks for the tips and hints!! I needed them!! (So did Wes and Shadow!!)
Don't worry, though. I'll continue to post the progress back here. ;-)
Oh. And the good news with all of this? At least the skunk didn't hit 'em head on. Nor did either of them get bit. They're both still healthy, albeit a bit damp at the moment. And I wasn't attacked by some nasty rabid skunk. So it coulda been a lot worse. I'd say all three of us were VERY lucky!!! (Although, I think I'll ask for something specific for Father's Day next year!!)
[This post was editid to re-spell "stinkin'" - it was spelled "stiknin'" in the original post.]

Perhaps if you attach a couple of "Stick Ups" to their collars...

True confession time:
I've never experienced a full blast of Skunk, but when I have smelled it in the air it is not that bad of a smell to me.

My true confession: Whenever I'm driving around and smell a skunk, rather than get annoyed, I burst out laughing at the thought of the poor unfortunate sucker who actually hit it...!

My collie, Buster, got hit in face by a skunk in the back yard one night. I washed him well with soap and water, but he still smelled. I heard that Masingil douche worked so I went to Walgreens the next morning. All I got for my trouble was snickers from the lady behind the counter when I went to pay for the douche. I have heard that the following concoction works: 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide 1/4 cup of baking soda 1 teaspoon of dishwashing detergent Mix in a bucket and sponge over the puppies. (careful of their eyes). See this link for more information. Good luck. If that doesn't work, time (and lots of it) surely will.

Wow, Semi ... After following the advice from Kid Chaos, I called my vet for help.
That was the EXACT recipe the vet's office gave me. :-D
I just tried it. They still stink a bit. The weather's gonna turn rainy. And Wes is gonna hate me because he has no clue what a dog house is for. (Even though he's had one for about 5 years!!!)
I just got home after a long day at work, and unfortunately, my feeling right now is "Tough. Maybe the rain will help wash part of it out. And maybe it will teach BOTH of them not to try something like that again." But I doubt it will. I fear the only thing that will come of leaving them out in the rain is simply annoyed neighbors. Oh well. ;-)
However, my truck now smells better. Teh Febreze has worn out of it. (THANK GOODNESS!!!) And I put some coffee grounds (unused) in a paper plate and set that in the truck today while I was at work. So the trun is MUCH better!!
As for now? I'm beat. I'm tired. And I don't want no stinky dogs sleepin' with me tonight!! :-)
G'night, folks!!!!

Aw, I hope the smell completely leaves them soon Beagz! You might have to have them sleep in your bed with you when it's all over

Cobie, just where do you think they NORMALLY sleep??? =Þ
Now, for the lowdown ... I *FINALLY* have them dressed again. I picked up two new collars yesterday, because I refused to deal with the OLD collars any longer!!!
Well, I hit 'em with the buttermilk bath. Then the Orange Oil and soap bath later that afternoon. The next night, they received the mixture Semi talked about. And a day later, they were hit with the same bath.
When all was said and done last night, I had two dogs that smelled like wet dogs. It was a VAST improvement. If you get close, you can tell there's still a little of a funky smell, but I shall refrain from putting my nose on the top of their heads for a couple of days.
Thank you EVERYBODY for your help!!!! Here's hoping we NEVER have to go through that again!!!
