Filmation's FLASH GORDON was their most serious attempt to "upgrade" their product. After starting out with very limited animation (SUPERMAN, ARCHIE, JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH), they moved into using rotoscoping in the 70's (STAR TREK, TARZAN, BATMAN). In 1979 they did a feature film, FLASH GORDON: THE GREATEST ADVENTURE OF ALL. This used extensive rotoscoping and ALMOST no reuse of animation over its entire length. Unfortunately, it was never seen in the US until 3 years after it was made (although parts of it was cut up and expanded into a weekly TV serial). But the original feature was shown in theatres overseas, where Dino DeLaurentis' company handled the distribution. Dino, who'd never heard of Flash, was impressed-- and inspired to make his own FLASH GORDON movie, which, astonishingly, he got into theatres LESS THAN A YEAR after getting the idea! (NOBODY in Hollywood these days could ever have managed such a feat.) I keep picturing DeLaurentis seeing the cartoon film and saying, "'Ey! I canna make somet'ing like-a dis!"

Filmation actually sold it to NBC as both the movie and a 16 chapter serial. That's why it worked so well as a Saturday morning cartoon. Filmation made it work.

Wow, I'd love to see that again. I've been a Flash Gordon fan since I was a very small child and read the ancient reprint collection of Alex Raymond's Sunday strips that our local Public Library had. I loved that book. I was ecstatic when Kitchen Sink reprinted, in color, those same strips. I'd love to see a modern, yet Raymond-esque, take on Flash. Dan Jurgen's '80s comic series just didn't quite cut it.

The most recent FLASH GORDON that really caught my eye was about 10 years ago (?), a 2-issue mini-series from Marvel (of all people). It was by Archie Goodwin (I'm pretty sure) and AL WILLIAMSON!!!!!
Williamson is one of the finest illustrators in the biz, and was the 2nd guy to handle the STAR WARS strip (after Russ Manning passed away). He also did the comics-adaptation of the 1980 DeLaurentis FG movie (though I've never gotten my hands on a copy of it). Williamson has, to my eyes, wasted his talent over the last 20 years INKING other people's work, just to make a living. This is a crime against the whole industry, in my view.
Anyway, the FG mini was STUNNINGLY gorgeous, and unlike, say, the last several decades of the newspaper strip, seemed to really follow the Alex Raymond vision of the series, while also (if I'm not mistaken) paying tribute to certain aspects of the 3 Buster Crabbe FG serials! Seek this out, if you can. It's something that was SO good it deserves to be in print, in hardback!

They've been pushing back the region 4 (Australia) release date of the set so maybe they are waiting for it to be finally released before announcing the UK version.

Someone MUST put the 90s X-Men cartoon on DVD. More than the Phoenix Sagas, that is.
My previous "Must have" DVDs was Babylon 5, and they finally fullfilled that request, so I'm really all set...

I'm also a big Night Court fan, and like me, you'll be happy to know that Season 1 is due out on February 8.
Once it's out, that means every TV series I'd been hoping to own has at least begun to be released as DVD season box sets.

It's a TV DVD Par-TEE!
I just ran to Best Buy, and sooooooo many of the sets we've been talking about are out today or later this month. Some are complete sets (Wonderfalls) while others are just seasons (Charmed), but last week thru next Tuesday, it's going to be TV overload. NIGHT COURT, MACGUYVER, SUPERMAN TAS, even The GREATEST AMERICAN HERO.
I'm just waiting for LOST on dvd now. Missed the epi about the $#@$# kid.
Just spouting off.

They're butchering TV shows so badly now-- even new ones when they're first-run-- it seems to me, more and more, that TV has become like radio. They might as well eliminate commercials altogether and just use the airwaves to SELL tv shows on DVD!
Some days, I feel like the only "real" TV station left is TCM.

Daria!I missed this entirely when it ran from 1997 to 2002 on MTV, I discovered it late at night on The N, and since last Summer I've been laughing my frigging ass off. The wit, cynical stylings, and skewering of everything about high school. I can't get enough of it. I was somewhat of a (male) Daria, though not with her cutting wit, which I wish I'd had more of at awkward moments. And it's not on DVD, not much of it. The two 75-minute season-ending shows, "Is It Fall Yet?" and "Is It College Yet?", those are on disc with a couple "bonus episodes" each, but the other 61 aren't available yet. Also, The N cuts some of the bits mentioning sexuality. Apparently MTV has had a long road to travel in getting music clearances. For everything Daria, try this Website ...

Kath and Kim series 3 on Region 2 DVD.
Actually, out DVD player plays regions 1, 2 and 4 (where is region 3 by the way? Japan or something?) so we *could* get series 3 if we really wanted to but it's expensive to get it off Australian Amazon (import taxes and all that gubbins) and hasn't been released here in the UK yet. I'm not even sure if series 2 has been released yet (series 1 doesn't even start showing on the BBC until this month) but we have the box set of the first two series from when Chris went to Oz on holiday last year, which is good. Worth it just for the out-takes and the full version of Sharon's audition for being a volunteer at the Commonwealth Games, especially her dance version of 'Australia Fair'.
But I wanna see Kylie as Eponee Rae dammit.

Grey, I'm thrilled to see you like Daria. That is one show It's near-impossiblke to dislike, if you allow yourself to watch it.

I just remembered another series I would love to see again, Beauty and the Beast starring Ron Perlman & Linda Hamilton. I have fond memories of my mom and I watching that show.

Tomorrow, I\'ll be going ... Off to see the bootlegs The wonderful bootlegs of "Daria"... maybe. Every other animated series, including "Justice League," shows up on such discs and in such venues. I'm getting tired of Viacom/MTV being so stupid about underestimating the market for its animation. Gazillions of Nick & Jessica discs -- pah. I admit to a human foible. I want to see all of this series.
