Okay, THAT comes as a surprise. I didn't even know she was sick...

From what I read, it was cancer. Didn't say what type. But that can take you pretty fast.

Yeah, I only added that I hadn't known she was sick after I clicked through to the BBC story and read that (my original thought was along the lines of "must have been some kind of accident"). Comes only a month or so after Nicholas "The Brigadier" Courtney died as well... (although he, at least, was well into his 80s. Sladen was only 63). ETA: Apparently, they'd even filmed episodes 1-4 and 11-12 of what would have been the next series of Sarah Jane Adventures before filming had to be suspended because of her illness...

Sad, just listened to the DVD commentary track she made with John Leeson for K-9 and Company last week. From his newsletter, here is Tom Baker's tribute: http://www.tom-baker.co.uk/pages/content/index.asp?PageID=159

She was my favourite companion; I was so pleased to see her return in Doctor Who and then the SJA. People are saying it was typical of her that she kept her illness secret and refused a fuss. Also that she kept working as long as possible. I will miss her, another part of my early life is no more.

That's 3 "WHO" regulars from "ROBOT" (the story that really got the show rolling in America) who have all passed away now-- Ian Marter, Nicholas Courtney & Lis Sladen. Very sad.

The first episode of the new season had a memorial at the end for her. Still shocked and refusing to accept that she is gone.
