I just saw that today. Has anyone else
seen it yet or plan to do so? I'm
curious about other people's reactions
to it....

Glorious. Absolutely glorious. Art Deco meets Flash Gordon meets "Metropolis" meets "Things to Come" meets "The Island of Dr. Moreau." That sounds like a mish-mash, but it ends up making perfect sense with its melodramatic gloss. Just turn off your skepticism, and you'll be fine.

I was riveted by this alternate universe. (Ostensibly 1939, but after the second World War, with airships docking at the Empire State Building as originally designed, and it careens forward from there.) It's all a plan set into motion by the archetypical Evil Scientist, who is not at all what you expect, either in form or in substance.

Jude Law has perfect savoir-faire in the teeth of danger, Gwyneth Paltrow channels Veronica Lake in her sassy and tenacious reporter, and Angelina Jolie (who doesn't show up for the first hour, but it's worth the wait) shows Churchillian fortitude better than Churchill ever did.

It all plays out in mostly sepia tones. Yes, the film was nearly all constructed by over twenty (!) of the best digital EFX houses on the planet, but you'll forget that inside of five minutes. The sepia -- with only three real breaks from it, all stunning -- makes this more of a fever dream, but thus turns it into a stun gun to your subconscious. It also makes the live acting and imagined settings blend seamlessly.

You'll have a blast! Especially at the end, for all who adore the pre-Sputnik romantic space era.

"Alert the Amphibious Squadron!" Still gives me chills. Go get some now. And you MUST see this first in the cinema. No option, if you're to enjoy it.

Wow. You really enjoyed it Grey. I saw it Saturday, and was disappointed. I thought the effects were awesome. Yet the story left me cold. It was a little too 30's for me. The flying scenes in the the city rocked. And the robots were spectacular! I will not be buying it on DVD when it comes out though. Too much left unsaid in the story, and it just did not have me riveted. I was left just wanting something more for some reason...

I thought it was a lot of fun. It was great that the story moved along like a serial, from one locale to another (the same way "Raiders of the Lost Ark" did). I wish there was more "giant robots attack the city", but if you've just seen the commercials, the movie is more than that.

The characters never really get beyond the 2D archtypes they're meant to portray, but Law and Paltrow do a good job of evoking that era. Angelina Jolie is also perfectly cast (and perfectly outiftted - yum!) as a kind of female British Nick Fury with her eyepatch, hellicarriers and attitude.
