Interesting article, albeit one that reads as pretty much a direct response to the lunacy that greeted the Thor/Superman fight in Av/JLA 2.

I agree with Tom Brevoort. So many fans miss the big picture of comics storytelling and get bogged down in minute details. These are probably the same sort of fans who argue that their favorite band "rocks" while certain others "suck." They live vicariously through their object of worship, or, as Brevoort says, they seek respect for themselves and their viewpoints through the characters.

There's nothing wrong with debating which character would beat another character. And super-heroes are, at their heart, escapism. But when fans become entrenched in their positions, it becomes less about fun and more about being "right" -- which misses the point about comics entirely.

Good commentary, although the "versus" discussions can become fun creative exercises themselves as people put their imaginations to work. Of course, LW is just about the only comics message board I read and the level of discussion here is always above average!

Bevoort wrote: "Comic book fans often want absolutism, but absolutism doesn’t really exist. And the reason why is something Bill Jemas often pointed out: we make all of this stuff up. It’s all fiction, none of it is real, none of it is larger than the many individual creators who work on it. We make it all up, so if tomorrow the folks at Marvel arbitrarily decide that Spider-Man can lift skyscrapers, then he can."

Sometimes we all take it a bit seriously, I guess - we don't want characters we like to change, or certainly not change beyond our perceptions of what they can or can't do, how they behave. Just look at how unpopular Big Vi is with many of us...Ultimately, if fans get so entrenched in a position that their egos get involved, it's time for a major reality wake-up call. Not to mention that those type of "discussions" get really, really boring...

It's fun when the "versus" stories are reversed, this story it's Superman beats Batman, another story has Bats trouncing Superman, or whoeover.

I agree with Tom. Even in the real world, if two fighters of similar ability clash, it can go either way. A weaker opponent can get lucky; a stronger opponent can get careless. I like a good "vs" debate, but I see no reason to whine about a fight that doesn't go as a fan expected.
