A friend of mine was going through old comics and found a copy of "Legends" #4 signed by John Byrne. It's in great shape, bagged and boarded and with a certificate of authenticity for the autograph.

Any idea what that might be worth or, even better, anyone interested in buying it?

It's the only issue of the series he has.

Seymour, whether a comic is significantly more valuable with the autograph depends on buyer interest, and that is hard to guage. The issue itself doesn't seem particularly important and the artist far removed from his "hot" period, so I doubt you'd be able to fetch very much for it. Cover price might even be a stretch, who knows? If you're really interested in selling it, think of an amount and try selling it on eBay. Maybe you'll get lucky.

In any case we generally discourage direct soliciting on Legion World. I haven't read forum rules recently, so I don't know if it's explicitly forbidden. But as a moderator on Gym'll's, I felt I should point that out. Please take no offense.

Funnily enough I just bought the entire series of Legends in NM condition for about AU$8.

I don't think the series is considered a particular classic so I'd be surprised if any single issue sold for much more than about $3-4 each.

And speaking only for myself, I wouldn't spend a cent on a comic with a signature on it. I like my comics as clear of as many blemishes as I can get them (including writing). Others may be into all that though.

I agree on the dislike for signed comics.

When meeting someone notable, my natural inclination used to be, "Can I get your autograph?" But, after asking Walt Simonson to sign the Darkseid/Dark Phoenix page from his Titans/X-men crossover, all I could think was, "Man... that cool page is now ruined."

No offense taken, Lardy -- just doing your job. I haven't read the rules recently, either, and I certainly didn't mean to break any. My friend has a limited knowledge of comics, so I thought I'd take his question to the most knowledgeable folks I knew. And I figured if they knew, they might be interested.

I tend to agree on signed books. I have a few, mostly when I pick up small press stuff from the creators at cons. I knew the issue itself would be practically worthless, but I didn't know if Byrne's name might still pull some weight.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I have a copy of Legion 300 signed by Giffen! No, I've never met Giffen or been to a con, but a guy at my old CBS purchased someone's collection and found the signed copy. As a regular and the shop's only Legion fan, I was sold it for what was the going market value for LSH 300 without a signature. Wottaguy!

I've recently reread the rules for LW, and there's nothing expressly forbidding soliciting here. But as a fellow mod, you may have noticed similar things that have happened being discussed among us. Maybe the rules might be amended for clarification.
