What I got from the article was that their CURRENT run is going to only be another twelve issues, but that they also are planning on another 12-issue arc PLUS a "Giant-Sized" Astonishing 1-shot at a furhter time. Not too shabby. P.S. to Des-- I just remembered a really crappy drawing I did of Wolvie and Colossus in a Fastball Special back in HS-- if I find it, I may try to post it here. We'll see if it's as terrible as I remember...

Eh, looks like I misread. This little bit posted at Newsarama confirms they're doing 24 issues total, plus the GS Astonishing: Joss Whedon spoke extensively about his upcoming Serenity movie on Saturday at WonderCon, but also had a few words about his comic book work, first off, confirming what Marvel's solicitations for May suggested, that Astonishing X-Men #1-#12 is the creators's first year on the series.
From the panel:
Whedon and Cassaday announced at the Serenity panel that they will stick around for another year of Astonishing X-Men. Whedon said that after issue #12 ships, there will be a brief respite, followed by another 12-issues by Whedon/Cassaday. This will be capped off by Giant-Size Astonishing X-Men Annual #1 as Whedon called it.

This latest storyline with the sentient Danger Room doesn't really do anything for me. The concept itself seems done to death (it's a bit too "2001" for me) and is it me, or does most A.I. seem to have the same personality? Needless to say, I'll reserve final judgment since the story's not over, but it hasn't captivated me so far.
It also seems like there's less interesting character interactions going on too.

I just read this trade today and I was blown away!
I read the first two trades of the Claremont/Davis work (recent) and liked it. Brought back fun memories. Alan is my fave artist as well.
But Whedon is amazing on the X. Best X stuff I've read in many many years.
OMG I am enjoying Uncanny and Astonishing!!! Larocca being another fave...and my trust in Milligan's talent...are the X books good agaiN???
Whedon/Cassaday rock man!

I have actually dropped Uncanny, marking the first time since 1989 I've skipped an X-core title. Depressing, actually, but I'm pretty convinced that the X-Verse needs a good cleaning out. Why does Legion, with a relatively clean history, keep getting rebooted, while X-Men, with a freaking universe of alternate histories and futures, a timeline stretching back to WWII that is becoming increasingly untenable, and more false deaths than a bad soap opera keep slouching towards Babylon? Yeah yeah, read Ultimate X-Men, but I will NOT! As much as I bitch about DC, at least they're not subjecting me to 14 mediocre books about the same 20 characters that don't even make sense when put together.
It's my own fault. I kept buying every miniseries, solo title, and crossover in the early 90s. If only I'd known I was helping to create a monster...
That being said, Astonishing makes me happy in a way that hasn't been since the debut of the second X-Men. Why has no one since Claremont been able to write Kitty?

I liked Alan Davis' Kitty during his stint of writing and drawing Excalibur -those are some of my favorite books of all time.
To have Davis and Claremont working with Nightcrawler and Storm is pure heaven to me. Uncanny and Astonishing are just the top of the list on X-books, especially after I dropped every X-book and said I would never buy them again when Larroca was forcibly taken off of Extreme to work on the ridiculous SubMariner.
Regular X-Men has a crazy Golgotha storyline and none of the characters really appeal to me except Polaris.
I Love Whedon's work on Astonishing -not surprising as Buffy is my favorite show of all time- and I love his take on all the characters. Though I do have to admit that I'm tired of seeing Wolverine in every book and now Emma is getting that way also. Leave them in Astonishing. The fact that Wolverine is on almost every cover is particularly annoying to me.

Kitty's great-- but I wanna see more Colossus. And Beast.
Any one have a theory about the 'mystery voice' that's been talking to Emma?
The first six issues were terrific; issues since have been very good, but not quite hitting the mark their predecessors set.
I'm looking forward to the next arcs-- maybe the conclusion will improve my opinion of the current one.

The dynamic between Kitty and Emma is one of my favorite points of this book. I could tell that would be the case in the first issue when Kitty made the comment about being late because she was getting completely dressed. Plus, Kitty makes Emma act kind of like a brat, so...

armsfalloffboy, i agree the X-verse has gotten very confusing over the years...and somehow the it keeps moving on. I've noticed lots of younger fans (children of the 90's) are huge fans of later characters like Psylocke, Bishop, Rogue, Gambit, etc.
I've looked at the "X-model" and I like it for one reason. No reboots back to the original X-Men, or Claremont's classic X-Men,etc. I hate when a title goes backwards b/c some writer think the original stuff to be the best or most original, etc. When things get quietly wiped out so everything is like it was.
The X-Men as muddled as their history/continuity is they build on what came before. Jean is dead. Emma is looking great by Whedon. So is Kitty. Now fans will look to these women as their favorites. New characters become popular...that's nice.

If there is one criticism of Astonishing, it's that sometimes not a whole lot seems to happen in an issue--lots of big pictures. I thought the last one (10?) was a little thin. Good stuff, though. How are Peter and Kitty going to survive being shish-kebabed?

this is currently the only X-title that i buy !!
and i really enjoyed the first 6 or so issues, but i'm not sure at the minute ?? feels it's dragging out a little .....
and i could look at CEREBRO without thinking of ROBERT VAUGN's sister in "SUPERMAN III" when she she gets turned into that robot version of herself, towards the end of the film !! she looks just the same IMO !!
Matthew.

Just a question I've had mulling around my head:
Does anybody feel the fallout from HOUSE OF MEH and DECIMATION in any way lessens Whedon's first arc?
I mean, how are we supposed be concerned with "Hope" when SW can wake up, cross her eyes and wipe out 90% of the mutants on Earth?
Whedon pulled me back in with his writing, but Marvel seems bound and determined to drive me away with their "events". Fooey.

this is the only x-title i buy now...and i was a pretty devoted x-fan.
so sad. i'll just ignore the rest of the x-universe..."198 what? i don't know what you are talking about"....besides give it five years and we'll have a ton of muties running around again.

No, it's not. He signed on to do another twelve issue run. It's going to start again in... I want to say January but it may be February or March. 2006 for sure, though. I think this is partially due to HoM, partially because they had some deadline issues with the first twelve and partly other commitments. But, long story short, it will return in 2006. Mark your calendars...

I also can't wait for this. I wonder where the characters will be in the mean-time? Hopefully they won't get sucked into any other books and Joss can have them all to him self upon his return (Wolvie not counting).

as long as he keeps writing emma, kitty, and peter so well i can block out their characters in other books. even scott is written well and i never liked him...wolvie too.

If the rumors are true, Kitty will be in New Excalibur (and back with Pete Wisdom) and Illyana will be filling her place in Astonishing X-Men. We'll just have to wait and see, though. As for the team itself... I have no idea if they'll be appearing in other books or not. Emma's been in adjectiveless for the past few arcs and both Emma and Cyke have reccuring roles in New X-Men - Academy X. I guess we'll see...

I'd bet almost anything that rumour is untrue. Whedon has an absolute lock on being Kitty's primary writer as part of his contract - she's the only character in AXM he actually asked for.
