Paul Levitz: It was talked about doing a new logo for…I don’t know – it may go back four or five years. There were some attempts at that time, and we weren’t happy with how they came out, and decided not to roll ahead. This one started about two years ago. If that is the results of two years worth of work then DC needs to hire a new ad agency or fire their in-house group responsible.

My take on the new logo:
You don't see McDonald's f***ing with the Golden Arches, do you?

Worse yet! Sarcasm lifted almost directly from "Wayne's World"! Have I no standards?

And when it comes to branding, one can't underestimate the consumer's apprehension of something "new", especially when it comes to an old familiar brand (remember "New Coke"?). It may be contemporary, but that in itself can be a drawback in terms of trust and comfort in a brand. "timeless" and "classic" have their own merits too. I'm sure they went though a ton of possibilities, but if this logo were a comic, this would be more a "reboot" than a "relaunch". If I were in those meetings I would've tried to skew towards creating a new logo where the old "bullet" was still intact in some way, rather than throwing it out - but that's me.

I like it! Subtly three-dimensional, in both the slant of the letters and the curvature of the star. Both elements impart a sense of motion to it. That's hard to do in a logo.
Yes, it probably was heavily focus-grouped. That's been true for company logos for, what, sixty years now? Complaining about it is foolish. They would be reckless to not do so, and the executives and investors wouldn't let them, anyway. This isn't an indy publisher who's making a crapshoot.
That being given, I'm glad it manages to have this much flair. It also looks far better as one element on a magazine cover than by itself, as is true of the current logo. Art of a beautiful woman doesn't hurt, o'course, in unveiling it.
I'm tired of the current logo, frankly. This typography maven can't help thinking "Machine" every time he sees it. That's the name of the '70s typeface used for "DC." It was passé and overused by the time Reagan became president. And the thoughts of a "machine" present or -- for the Legion -- future always were a bit sterile and dry, as I saw it.

I think it's important that DC really wants to "brand" all the uses of its characters. Marvel has done an excellent job of controlling how other media use its characters. As a result, the Marvel films have been of generally (although not universally) higher quality.
I am glad that DC wants to step up and claim Superman as ITS property, rather than just another Warner property.
...but you don't have a moment where you're sitting there staring at a table full of twenty-five characters with little name signs that say, "Hi, my superpower is confusing you!"

I hate it. HATE IT. Bleeeeeeeeaargh. Not right for DC at all. The old logo needed an update more like "yellow-oval Batman" than this "Az-Bats" one.

While I agree the new logo isn't making me jump right of my seat and buy everything DC publishes, I don't think any logo could to that, unless it was seared into my retinas and laden with a dangerous level of subliminals. However, I really though the old logo was quite dated. The 'Letterman'-style font really bugged me too - was anyone fooled into thinking comics readers were college jocks? While it does have that kitchy retro style, I totally agree that DC needed to develop a new symbol that they can spread across their whole line, not just comics. How's that for non-sarcasm!

I *MUCH* prefer the traditional DC logo that we've had over the years (in fact I've been wanting to get a tattoo of it for the longest time) but I guess if we had to have a new logo (and I'm not of the opinion that we did) then we could've done worse than the one they came up with.
I think it'll look a little better once they play around with the colours too.

[edited for language] I have a hard time equating these two. Marvel has changed their logo and wasn't DC once called National? The new logo looks good and was probably intended to be an update for the 21st Century.
