What's the deal with variant covers? Any time I've seen them, they're separate from the "regular" covered issues, bagged, and priced ridiculously high ... is that the way is usually is?

Most of the time. A lot of them at one of my local shops end up in a cheaper than cover price box after a while. The other store I go to does not usually buy enough to get them.

I got the ADVENTURE relaunch # 1 variant for cover price. I did pay $1 more for the AMBUSH BUG # 1 variant (worth it IMO! I mean, Bat-Girl was on the cover! No, not that Batgirl. Or her either. OR her. Bette Kane!!). It was bagged so the higher price could be stuck to it.

But yeah, I've noticed since then the variants are all bagged up and overpriced big time.

I never by Variant Covers unless they're so beautiful I can't not have it (can't remember the last time that happened). When I was a kid my Dad bought all the variants for X-Men #1 and afterwards was so annoyed with himself for doing it, he never bought a variant cover again; so a lot of that has stuck with me.

I know some companies, like Top Cow and Boom!, almost always have variants. Its likely just instituionalized there at this point.

I think the last varient I bought was the JSA Superman special they did. Only reason I bought that was because the regular version was not available, and it was only $1 more than what the regular issue would have been.
