heb·e·tude: Dullness of mind; mental lethargy.

[Late Latin hebetd, from Latin hebes, hebet-, dull.]

hebe·tudi·nous adj.

So, before I read LSH #2 yesterday, I don't recall ever coming across the wonderful word "hebetudinous." I consider myself to have a large and diverse vocabulary, much of it gleaned from comics (e.g., "Suffering Sappho!").

How many of you were sent scurrying to the dictionary by Brainy's epithet? 'Fess up.

And could Brainy have come up with a better turn of phrase to express what was going through his mind? "Bah! Stupid really hot precog chick who wants to marry me! Bah!"

Well, I certainly had to look it up. Don't think I've ever even seen/heard that word before.

There was a similar scene in the Levitz era (using simpler language), in which Brainy made some comment about Nura not employing her mind to its potential. IIRC.

I've never seen it used either. And it wasn't even listed in my Pocket Dictionary.

So I decided to make up a meaning, and went with a mix of "mischevious" and "pulchritude".

I like mine better.

I ran to the dictionary. I love when comics teach me new words, such as "precognition" and "eclectic" (from Capt. Carrot and X-Men, respectively).

Huh. I didn't bother to look it up, but I assumed it was derived from Hebe, the goddess of youth and beauty, not something to do with dullness and laziness. Here I thought Brainy was giving her a compliment. Should've known better.

That's what happens when I ASSUME.

SUPERCILIOUS, pronounced in some parts of America exactly the same as "super-silly ass".

I admit it sent me to the dictionary. It's the first time in a very, very long time that a comic book has done so.

Normally I can at least fake a word's derivation, if nothing else. This one I didn't. Yay! Mark Waid can use words I don't know, even more reason why he's my hero!
