Anyone get the latest issue of GL? Seems the GG have been on a little recuritment trip.

For anyone that hasn't read it yet... in Paris a new Crimson Fox is in battle with some twins. She gets some help from Freedom Beast -introduced first in Animal Man- and the rest of the GG. Crimson Fox knows who they are and how they are harrassing GL. She flatly refuses membership, but she isn't given a choice.

Members I can identify are Jet and Gloss -from the New Gurdians, Tasmanian Devil, and Freedom Beast. There was another animal type guy and someone that had wind powers.

Let's see, the Global Guardians have always been one of those cool groups that writers come along and screw up from time to time.

Originally, they were lead by Dr. Mist and although they appeared in the pages of SUPER FRIENDS, they became known as the Global Guardians in DC COMICS PRESENTS #46 (June 1982), which featured (along with Dr. Mist) Seraph of Israel, Green Fury of Brazil (who originally worked as a secretary for Brazil's Wayne International and could breathe hot or cold flame and shoot illusion inducing sparks from her eyes), Rising Sun of Japan, Olympian of Greece, Little Mermaid of Denmark, and Jack O'Lantern of Ireland.

There was also Bushmaster of Venezuela, Godiva of England, Icemaiden of Norway, Impala of South Africa, Owlwoman of an Indian tribe in Oklahoma, USA, Tasmanian Devil of Australia, Thunderlord of Taiwan, Tuatara of New Zealand, and Wild Huntsman of [West] Germany.

In the HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE, Red Star was listed as being the representative from Russia and B'Wana Beast was listed for South Africa.

Unfortunately, right after the Crisis, Roy Thomas got ahold of them and determined that not only was the comic-buying public too stupid to figure out that there might be two Wildfires, but that we'd be too stupid to comprehend a Green Fury and a Fury running around. Thus, was Bea's name changed to Green Flame. It was in INFINITY, INC. #34 that we were also introduced to a French member Fleur-de-Lis and the Dome and a new history that included past heroes - Gaucho of Argentina, Knight and Squire of the United Kingdom, Legionary of Italy, Musketeer of France, and Wingman of Sweden. The mysterious Belphegaor (of France) was revealed as a director of the Dome in TEEN TITANS SPOTLIGHT #11.

The team got further shafted with Giffen's JLI, as a result of the League's new status the team "disbanded" and Green Flame and Icemaiden seemingly had inferior powers (which eventually got upgraded in new ways) and became known as Fire and Ice. The team itself became JLI villains, especially Owlwoman and Jack O'Lantern (who was replaced by an evil guy who was later killed). Little Mermaid also died during this time (but has later been depicted alive).

Eventually, the team is "freed" from the Queen Bee's control and regroups again under Dr. Mist's leadership. Tasmanian Devil joins the JLE. However, the good times are short-lived as the original Jack O'Lantern is killed and replaced yet again. Also, they kill off both Bushmaster and Thunderlord and take away Impala, Godiva, and Tuatara's powers before taking Wild Hunstman out of existence. Also in JUSTICE LEAGUE QUARTERLY #17, we are introduced to Centrix of Canada, Tundra of Russia, Chrysalis of France, and Cascade of Indonesia who are supposed to be their replacements.

Ice was later revealed to be seperate from Icemaiden after she was killed.

hmmm

So, I don't know who the two new characters are. I was hoping I could find them by going through the past members. Later, I'll look through DC's other international heroes.

Let's see if I have better luck now -

The New Guardians was the gimmick group created from MILLENIUM. The Guardian of the Universe, Herupa Hando Hu and the Zamaron Nadia Safir came to Earth to grant a handful of humans super-powers. The "Chosen" were Salima Baranizar of Iran (stoned to death before receiving powers), Betty Clawman of Aboriginal Australia (became one with the Earth), Thomas Kalmaku of the US (originally refused his powers, later can become one with the world’s positive essence), Janwilliem Kroef of South Africa (rejected the Oans teachings and was dismissed), Nikolai Latikov of the U.S.S.R. (killed by the KGB before receiving powers), Raoul of unknown location (deemed too senile), Terra of Marvovia (presumed deceased and replaced by Floro), Extranó of Peru (Gregorio de la Vega, HIV+ with magical and telepathic powers), Jet of Jamaica/U.K. (Celia Windward, became HIV+ from the Hemogoblin and eventually died. She could control electromagnetic energy and is now apparently alive), Gloss of China (gets strength and speed from the “dragon lines” of Earth), RAM of Japan (Takeo Yakata, can control computers after becoming an electronic lifeform), Floro of an other-dimensional world (Jason Woodrue/Floronic Man, foe of the Atom who controls plants), and finally, Harbinger of unknown location (Lyla Michaels, can fly, project powerblasts, and replicate into multiple bodies – now deceased or Donna Troy depending on your source wink ).

Holy cow!!! What an impressive run-down.

Which reminds me... after watching all 17 SUPERMAN cartoons from the 40's, today I dug out SUPER POWERS: GALACTIC GUARDIANS from the 80's. These feature SAMURAI from Japan-- apparently a Red Tornado stand-in. I think they did an action figure of him, but I don't believe he ever appeared in the comics (unless it was a SUPER POWERS mini, which aren't-- really-- part of regular DC continuity).

Oh yeah-- and it was cool to have Adam West doing Batman's voice!

Per Geoff Johns, they are a new Manticore* from Greece, and an all new character named Sandstorm from Syria.

* The original, now dead, being a member of the villainous Jihad/Onslaught.

These guys actually had write ups in the DC Encyclapedia. Chrysalis was a robot that released poison butterflys if I remember correctly. Controlled by some unknown bad guy. Can't remember anything about the other entries though. Could there have been a Global Guardians story after JLQ #17 that I missed?

I noticed that too after I wrote the above. It seems like all four had a lot more backstory than we were led to believe (more than some characters that we've seen a lot more of). Weird.

And thanks Icefan. That'll save me from wasting more time looking through Comics. smile

More Super Powers fun... EL DORADO from Mexico (he can read minds and teleport) has been in several episodes from the "Firestorm" season. The year I was watching (and taping), they only made about 8 new episodes, so they mixed that season together with the previous one and re-ran just those episodes over and over in no particular order. (I started taping late, so my tape keeps jumping back and forth between seasons.) While the "Firestorm" season strikes me as much better than the stuff I saw that preceded it, the "Cyborg" season had a MASSIVE jump in quality. Anyone know if they changed animators, artists, or anything? There seemed to be a big effort to make that last season much more "authentic" to the comics of the time, with upgrades to the design of the "star gate", Darkseid, backgrounds in general-- and APOKALIPS actually looked like it should in the final year, which it DIDN'T the previous year.

Anyone know the original Pre-Crisis origin of Beatriz, when she was Green Fury? Super Friends #47 is neither cheap nor easy to find.

I know she worked for Wayne enterprises, and her powers were originally magical, not the result of a "pyro-plasm" explosion like the post-crisis Fire.

Also, her original power was to breath green flame.

I remember back in the 90s JLA writer Gerard Jones planned to reveal the original Green Fury was a totally separate character kind of like how he did with Ice/Ice Maiden.

I've never been able to find that super friends issue either!

Thanks, KidChaos.

Every little bit helps.

In the Secret Origins issue that did Bea's post-Crisis origin, the editor rather insensitively dismissed her pre-Crisis origin as a "mystical mess" or words to that effect. It certainly sounds more interesting to me than her lame post-Crisis origin (and don't get me started on the way Rucka et al "grittified" her origin a few years ago in Checkmate.)

Thanks, EDE, unfortunately my clunky old computer gets messed up by any site having to do with Fortune City. I'll click it the next time I'm on a library computer, though. Thanks again.

I do recommend looking at that site when you get a chance, as it seems a pretty comprehensive Green Fury/Fire fanpage!

IIRC, Cascade and Tundra appeared in a two-part issue of Wonder Woman where the heroines all united to fight the female super-villains who had turned the male heroes into animals.

Cascade was depicted as having power over water, but Tundra was already unconscious when she appeared.

That was a completely original powerset, the magical green flame that could be cold or hot, allowed her to fly and could generate illusions. I wish they'd kept with that rather than make reduce her power to generating a tiny fire breath for the JLI run, and then making her a Human Torch clone later.
