http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dc-comics-earth-2-designs-120227.html So let me get this straight, DC. You take take Power Girl, and remove the very thing that made her most different from Supergirl, the fact that she NEVER took the Super name, was always her own character. And as if we really needed YET ANOTHER SUPERGIRL. I'm sure many many many people will not be bothered by this in the least, but I really want to know, who on earths will actually be PLEASED by it? What possible purpose does it serve to take away things that made Earth 2 different and replace them with totally different things to make it different? Why remove the shining piece of uniqueness that Power Girl had? You bring back the multiverse, but refuse to use the parts of it that the people who love the multiverse actually want to see. And okay, it's not infinite anymore, but you still have 52 damn earths. Why can't you put all these new ideas on the previously undetailed Earth-Whatever? Along with the OLD ideas you want to duplicate and then twist, like Clark's cousin being Supergirl. I just don't understand why -- if you're going to HAVE an Earth 2-- you can't just leave it alone for the people who want to write Earth 2 and those who want to read Earth 2. Just don't mention it till someone comes along who wants to actually USE it and do it justice. Or at least try. Yes, I know Earth 2 isn't the original Earth-Two, but why make it *this* different when you have plenty of Earths to play with? Somebody please tell me I'm not paying enough attention and the real Power Girl is still out there as a multiversal crisis orphan?

I mean, is this just to balance out Huntress become a Wayne again?

Huntress starting out as a Robin doesn't bother me. It even makes sense, as a backstory. Perhaps this is because I don't know as much about Helena Wayne's original origin and personality. Maybe those who do would say she'd never take a hand-me-down codename, even as a kid. (Especially not a rich kid.)
But to me, this current development is more akin to naming her Batgirl or Batwoman after she's already grown up.

To me, there was a rich part of her backstory in becoming Huntress against her father's wishes - or even his knowledge. He wanted to keep her out of superheroics, and he was so devastated by the loss of her mom that (except for his final battle) never worse his Batman costume again.
And he dies before she can ever find a way to tell him. Epic tragedy within the House of Bat.
Yes, the Robin bit works, I suppose. But to me it ruins core elements of the character - she just becomes a generic Legacy character.

Kent, now that you mention it, you're right, I do remember Helena being anything BUT a Robin. So yes, let's put it in the same column. The one labeled "WTF".
Gone, I don't know what the current number of Earths is for sure, lest I checked it was 52, coinciding with the number of titles they were publishing, which appeared to casually observing moi to be based in the popularity of "52" (the series and the concept, both of which came before the relaunch).
I also don't know that even if I did know, they wouldn't change it tomorrow anyway.

gone, I don't know. I've given up on keeping track, and I only marginally care.
I liked that something resembling old Earth-2 popped up in JSA a few years ago. I'll always have a great deal of nostalgia for 70s All-Star and related stories/cross-overs, and for the potentials Roy Thomas brushed upon but didn't quite nail in the 80s.
But despite the Levitz Worlds Finest mini which I was tempted to pick up (if only because I brainstormed up a similar idea back in the 80s), I'm prepared to give it all a pass. It may be an Earth-2, but it is not my Earth-2. I do hope a new generation finds a Huntress they love, though, even if she's not mine.

I have to admit that, despite my general skepticism over practically everything DC does these days, the extent to which they seem to be missing the whole point of Earth-Two is just incredible.
Now I'm wondering how badly they'll mess up Earth-3!

Originally posted by gone: A bit off topic, but has it been stated that there are 52 realities in This new timeline that is the DCnU? Because, since history has been altered right back to the creation of the Universe (again) then there could once more. There could be Infinite Earths.... or only 2 or 3. Has DC actually committed anything in print or is the idea that there are 52 Universes in the Multiverse based on the previous reality and the 'New 52' tag line that I thought reffered to the number of active DCnU Titles, not the number of worlds in the DCnU? Morrison's Multiversity is still in development so there are at least 8 Universes based on what we know about that story. I'd say were still meant to believe in the 52, but there may actually be an infinite number.

I would guess a lot of people feel that way. I have a theory though that many of them wouldn't actually mind the constant uncertainty if DC were making the ride enough fun.
It would have to be fun enough to make up for the loss of familiarity that their minor former attempts at continuity provided.

And like it or not, it has solidified DC's role as the #1 company (as stable as it gets, that is. Industry numbers are still unhealthily low across the board).
DC 'continuity' is and has been a work in progress. It certainly seemed to have more stability in decades past, but again, by the numbers, there was less urgency in times past to keep tinkering to find the right formula.
That said, I would wish for ongoing Elseworlds that would let creative teams revisit past continuities, or mash them up as fits the story. I guess we do see a little of that with books like All-Star Superman, Alex Ross' Justice, etc. But the new 52 doesn't yet seem to offer these, unless I've missed something (which is certainly possible. I'm hardly as up to date as many of you).

And yes, gone, if I was as vested in having a single continuity, I would fully agree with you.

I think it's WAYYY too early in the New 52 to start doing Elseworlds, so that's one thing they're doing right. It would be way too confusing, and if nothing else, you need something stable and familiar to diverge from or it can't be recognized as something "else".

Oh, I see that argument. But as someone who is never going to be vested in the 52 beyond Legion, and someone who is hardly the typical DC buyer, I'm just expressing my daydream.

This is akin to a restaurant serving a cheeseburger for years and then suddenly stopping. And then they start again, except it doesn't have cheese. Say what?
Oh, and you can only get it at this one restaurant.

I understand the frustration expressed, I've just never been invested in these two characters. Power Girl was always someone I gritted my teeth around and the Huntress was mostly a non-entity to me.
So, umm, I like the concept drawings and the cover. I also like the reworking of the other characters shown.
I DO hope that we see some of the other JSAers, though.
A singin' and a dancin' along the way.

They might as well have the golden age of the JSA happening in the 80s. Though if they made it contemporary, it would actually mirror the original JLA/JSA relationship.
Was there still a JSA on the primary Earth of the DCnU? And what are they calling the primary Earth? Earth-1?

The more I read about these 2 books, the more my enthusiasm wanes. I'm still gonna pick up the first couple o' issues & give 'em a chance to draw me in though.
