On 29 November 1967 WRESAT, an Australian developed satellite, was launched from the Woomera rocket range into earth orbit on a Sparta rocket left over from a joint US-UK-Australian research project. The Sparta was based on the American Redstone. This made Australia the seventh nation to operate a home-grown satellite and the third to launch from its own territory (or fourth if you count France which had launched from French Algeria, although they did use their own internally developed Launch vehicle). The other six were Soviet Union, USA, UK, Canada, Italy and France. UK, Canada and Italy were all launched on American rockets from American launch sites.
For a while Woomera was the second busiest launch site in the world, second only to Cape Canaveral.
