Just discovered this song and video today and am in that stage of love where you just wanna bang it 5 or 6 times a day!! If this style music is not your THANG, at least try to sit through it for the video, which looks like it could have been lifted directly from 80s Claremont X-MEN or NEW MUTANTS!
Me and my Mom *loved* Donna Fargo's FARGO COUNTRY album. We had an 8-track (!!!!) of it back then; in the 90s I found it at a used record shop in Nashville; in the 2000s for a Mother's Day gift I had that album burned to CD (this was before I was all up into ITunes, besides, paying to have the album burned to CD seemed more present-ey). This is my 2nd favorite song from the album, and my latest favorite song!
Though this isn't my latest favorite song, it IS my first favorite song from FARGO COUNTRY and has been since I was a kid. The simple loss of a cricket and a bullfrog and then a sweetheart really broke my heart then, and the line "he never loved no one else" was daggers in my heart (good daggers I mean, meaningful daggers) as an adult.
After following up the dance-electronica-pop masterpiece that was the album called THE FAME with the so-pandering it-bordered on-pitiful single "Born This Way", Lady GaGa lost me as a fan for the duration of that album's singles.
I think "Applause" is a return to uber-addictive hooky dance-pop form from her earlier days and I'm happy to be a fan again!
We'll have to see what the rest of the ARTPOP album brings though...
I thought you would love "Applause" straight away.
I listened to it one time, and was like "eh" (mainly because I was still mad about BTW) but then a few hours later I found "Applause"'s stomper-heavy chorus coming back into my brain and-- to this very second-- it hasn't let go. Like much of the awesomeness of THE FAME.
Let me know what you ultimately feel about this song, please. *hug*
Well, Lash, after hearing "Applause" a few more times and rolling it around in my head, I'm happy to say it's growing on me. I think what happened to cause my ambivalence at first was that my expectations were too high, I thought it would be something as immediately hooky as "Bad Romance" or "Poker Face." It's not the first time a Lady Gaga single took a while to engage me, in fact, her very first one, "Just Dance," was one of those occassions.
Now I feel more optimistic about the "Artpop" album.
Yeah, it's not a "love on first listen" song, but I def. think it insinuates itself in the brain and works its way in. Glad you are enjoying it!
I find the video enthralling. I just like the whole simplicity of it from the dance routines, the fun costumes and such. In fact I'm gonna go watch it again. *smile*
I'M A BIG FAN OF APPLAUSE. Even if I don't think the song is that catchy ... it's not so much worse than the rest of her other songs for such a backlash.
APPLAUSE live, from the iTunes festival; The Lady does a relatively tame performance costumewise here, and I think it's nice to see her as near to plain as we ever have.
