The above could be a function of how those people were born - their DNA contained in the Codex and apparently bred and nurtured for a specific purpose. Tsk. Reminds me a bit of the societies of Gates' and Quislet's homeworlds, where our heroes are among the few free thinkers and everyone else thinks alike.

I'm surprised at the reasonably positive reviews this film has received in this thread because I thought it was completely "meh". A totally 2 out of 5 film.

There were a few good elements (Lois Lane, Henry Cavill, the displays of power, Faora, those breather-helmet things, Pete Ross!) but there was too much else that was a let-down.

I won't be in a rush to see it again, if ever.

I think in a way a lot of it is that we are so awestruck by finally getting Superman displaying his power like he never has before. Plus, those flashbacks are really effective and often powerful. And the Krypton segment was so unexpected and different from what we're used to--in a good way! (Apparently, people are begging for a Jor-El spin-off, and Crowe wouldn't mind making it happen!)

All that said, it's still hard to fall in love with it like I did the original Donner film. That one is so full of memorable moments, quotable lines and just transcendent charm!

Here are three spoiler-filled reviews which I think sum up the problems with this film very well -

http://comicsalliance.com/man-of-steel-moral-superman-review-zack-snyder-david-goyer/

http://thrillbent.com/blog/man-of-steel-since-you-asked/

http://comicsalliance.com/man-of-steel-on-my-planet-the-s-is-for-sucks-spoilers-review/

P.S. I just remembered something else I liked about the film - the music. I'm a big fan of the John Williams theme from the original (who isn't?) and while Hans Zimmer's music here wasn't as memorable (or original - it sounded very Inceptiony to me) I did like it.

I know! And he has a bigger role than Lana too. I won't spoil how he's characterised in the film but as a fellow Pete fan I'll just say "hang in there".

Pete was an awesome addition to the cast. Nice to see how they used him.

Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

Re Pete, it could have been worse.

Another key character not in the movie was Jimmy Olsen. Interestingly though, they had Steve Lombard and someone called Jenny, whose role could have been filled by Cat Grant.

One of the reviews I read suggested Jenny was a female version of Jimmy Olsen, though the last name is not used.

I have mixed feelings over Pete Ross. I liked how he is used in the movie, though
the fact that he tells the first reporter who comes to town where Clark can be found and what he did on the bus undercuts his traditional role as guardian of Superboy's secret identity.

Re: Pete...

Yeah - at first I wasn't pleased with his portrayal as overweight bully but I liked that they at least gave him some growth through the movie and showed him helping Clark up later on. Adult Pete giving Lois the Kent farm's address I also didn't mind since at least that scene gave us a good display of her investigative journalist abilities. One thing I didn't get though was the point of Pete showing up again during the big fight in Smallville? They cut to him enough to make it seem like he might become imperiled or something but other than to give Clark a moment of pause, there was no purpose to it. And why did Clark pause anyway? I'm not sure what we were meant to take away from that moment of recognition. I wondered if a longer scene with him there might have ended up on the cutting room floor?

P.S. Just remembered something else that I think the film did sort of well - Lara. Supes' real Mum often gets very short shrift in his origin story so it was nice to see her get at least a little bit of attention here.

P.P.S. I definitely think that 'Jenny' is meant to be a new Jimmy. And what a pointless change! Her whole function in the film was to need saving from underneath a pile of concrete! Talk about sexist if they changed it because they couldn't imagine either a) a male character getting trapped under concrete or b) the audience being as worried if it wasn't a damsel in distress. I thought the whole Daily Planet stuff was a real let-down actually. Easily the weakest, most under-developed part of the film.

If Man of Steel is the start of a franchise, as it's intended to be, I have no doubt we'll see more of the Daily Planet and Jenny in subsequent films.

And while Jenny is a fine character in her own right, I would be disappointed if a male Jimmy Olsen doesn't make an appearance.

I can almost imagine the filmmakers thinking, "Well, if they accept a black Perry White, they'll accept a female Jimmy Olsen." I hope that's not the case, though. Changing a character's race is something I've gradually come to accept (when you've got Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury or Laurence Fishburne as Perry, you let them play whoever they want), but creating a female version of a male character still strikes me as one of those "Let's make it different because we can" decisions. What's next? A snake?

^ Given its success, I have no doubt that this film will spawn a franchise. But I don't judge movies like I judge TV shows, where I give the writers time to develop their characters in later episodes.

I judge movies by what they make me feel about their characters *during the movie I'm watching*, and no amount of 'Jenny' back-story in a sequel is suddenly going to make me retroactively care that this random, character-less character who's done nothing all movie is trapped under concrete. Same goes for Perry White and Steve Lombard. My investment in those characters was down to their names alone. In every other way they were non-existent ciphers we were never given any reason to be interested in.

True, Blacula. However, I think it's okay not to have much invested in these characters at this point. The movie focuses very deliberately on Clark's battle with the Kryptonians. Everything else takes a back seat.

As fans, we may expect more out of the Planet, Jimmy, Perry, and so forth, but they're really not the focus of the story. The fact that they were included at all suggests, I think, an acknowledgement of how important they are to the Superman legend. The filmmakers took a rather chancy move by not including kryptonite or Luthor, but this was the right move as the story is complete without them.
