Hi guys,

The next time you have issues with the historic diplomatic tongue (French or freedom, in case you're wondering), please come here and ask for the few words that are problematic.

In the future, I will also post some "survival French" tips here.

I'm not a translator. I'm not gifted enough in languages(and I have currently a hard time trying learning German). I try to draw(see my own gallery here ).

So let's talk about you, when did you discover the Legion? who is your favorite legionnaire? are you a true bear, or is it a fake beard?

Well, I am a translator, specialized in Sci-fi and games, as a matter of fact. smile

Among others, I work for a big international game company on boardgames and card games...
And I do translate comic books as well...

When did I discover the Legion? Back in 1978 in French translation magazines. It was the Mike Grell era. Just loved it and then switch the the American edition as early as I could. In fact, I learned English through LSH and Avengers, my two favorite teams (strangely enough, both are rebooted at the same time this year).

My favorite Legionnaires, as I said in another thread, are Timber Wolf, Star Boy, Tellus, Sensor Girl, Polar Boy, White Witch.. I also liked Kent Shakespeare and a few others.. Of course, all of those BEFORE the dreadful Zero Hour reboot...

I am a true bear. Actually, I'm even featured in quite a few websites about them. LOL

That would be the Heros 2000 title, right? I discovered their existance on eBay a few month ago.
Me I discovered them with their first title (Legion des Super-heros 1 - "L'empire de la folie") and followed them in "Les vengeurs".

I, too, learned English with Comic books(Legion, X-men...)

Except Polar Boy, they are all favorites of mine!

Please be aware, Legion fans, that the issue titled "Lempire de la folie", to which FK refers, is our very own beloved Dr. Mayavale issue!

Correct, Fat Cramer! (Thank god the issue reprinted the 1st part of the Dark Man saga, too).

Yep, that was indeed in Heros 2000 issue 1. And also the big Legion of Super-Heroes Treasury with the Wedding of Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl.

Good morning, Cubby! (7 am here)

I would love it if you translated my ugly English into beautiful French! I absolutely love this new establishment you've opened and I'm sure you'll be kept quite busy. If you haven't already, please peruse the Legion World Directory, right here in the Mission Monitor Board forum. It's a helpful tool to learn about the ever-growing playscape of Legion World. The FTA will find its way in the Directory in my next edit. Have fun and post often!

Hugs 'n kisses,

Misty!

Hi Misty!

Well, I'll be happy to help. smile That's why I signed. However, don't send whole books to translate LOL

But I'll be happy to translate problematic sentences. I'll also make a list (if that hasn't been done yet) of all the Legionnaires's names in French sometime...

As for the "Survival French" guide... I may even do a racy version if that's fine here... I'll start by the basics though smile

Racy is cool, as long as it doesn't delve into outright cybersex. This is intended to be an all ages board, so keep that in mind and you'll be just fine!

Hey, that's good MEL smile

Of course I know all kind of bad words... I'll just have to check which ones can be used and not used here.

Just use French ones and no one will know - and imagine what you could do with flirting en français ...

Actually, that's fairly easy... I've written in the past a guide to cruising in French which was rather vulgar at times for another website smile

Besides, i've always thought it was unfair to write sometyhing that people couldn't understand.

OK the first SURVIVAL FRENCH sentences... When cruising...

First contact:

Hi, do you come here often? : Bonjour (or Salut), tu viens souvent ici?

Hi, can I offer you a drink? : Bonjour (or Salut), je peux t'offrir un verre?

Hi, is that a rabbit in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me? : Bonjour (or Salut), tu as un lapin en poche ou ça te fait plaisir de me voir? (Note: french people won't understand the pun, so drop it)

Hi, do you live someplace around there?: Bonjour (or Salut), tu habites dans le coin? (would show how interested you are, but it is perhaps too direct)

Hi, do you know where the Eiffel Tower is?: Bonjour (or Salut), sais-tu où se trouve la Tour Eiffel? (with this kind of stupid question, he will think you're a twat, but you never know, stranger pick-up sentences have worked)

Hi, do you live with your parents? : Bonjour (or Salut), tu habites chez tes parents? (a definitive no.... All you'll get is a beer in the face, or worse)

A bit more. This time, you are the cruised one, but the person isn't your cup of tea:

Hi, sorry, but I don't speak French. : Bonjour (or Salut), désolé, mais je ne parle pas le Français. (Don't bother, he will probably know enough English)

Hi, sorry, but I'm waiting for a friend: Bonjour (or Salut), désolé, mais j'attends un ami/une amie. (This one can work, but you need a friend to arrive to save you... Otherwise, just hug the first guy/girl coming in the bar)

Hi, not tonight, I've got a headache. : Bonjour (or Salut), pas ce soir, j'ai mal à la tête. (a classic... but very rude)

Hi, I'm sorry, but you're not my style. : Bonjour (or Salut), désolé, mais tu n'es pas mon type. (that's a bit rude, but at least, it's the truth... could try it)

Hi, I'm sorry, but I prefer men. : Bonjour (or Salut), je suis désolé, mais je préfère les hommes (be careful to whom you say that one smile )

Hi, I'm sorry, I'm not interested in you, but could you please introduce me to your nice friend there? : Bonjour (or Salut), tu ne m'intéresses pas du tout, mais pourrais-tu me présenter à ton ami/amie, là-bas? (lose a bit in the translation, but this one is really rude... However, you could get the attention of his/her friend)
