The scene where Wolverine and Colossus do the fast-ball special almost made me cry. Whedon did it perfect, and didn't even have to mention ‘Fast Ball Special’, since we knew it was coming and were desperately waiting for it.
I honestly sat back for a minute and thought "damn...my X-Men are back."

Arrgh. I haven't been tempted to pick up an X-Book lo these many years and they have to tempt me with a "Fastball Special." That just gives me the warm fuzzies all over.

Matt, wait until you see it. First, you get the surprise reappearance with Peter, the best Peter/Kitty scene in 20 Years, the X-Men versus the bad guy, and then [kinda spoilers] the bad guy is getting away with no real way to catch him, leaving Wolverine to say something like “well there is an old fashioned way”, while looking at Peter (who he’s just seen is back from the dead)…and then Bam! Next page is a double page spread scene of Colossus hurling Logan at him with a fastball special, no dialogue, cuz none is needed.
B/t that scene and the one with Kitty and Peter the previous issue, I remember why I love the X-Men in the first place.

The only X-title I read beside Exiles and Ultimate X-Men (which, thankfully, don't have to be tied to regular X-continuity). I got away from them a long time ago but Whedon was enough to draw me back and he is proving it was worth it.

read old issues to soothe pangs..... C'mon, matlock, you just know there's a book that's right on the edge of being dropped. Go ahead and drop it and pick up AXM. It's worth it. Trust me. I quote some others: "He does Claremont better than Claremont." (At least, these days.)

Not to play Devil's Advocate to matlock, but this would be a great time to check it out. I think the trade of the first six issues came out last week, as did issue seven.

Maybe later... I think I'll be buying the new Legion on layaway as it is. My car loan is up and we've got to make a huuuuge payment Friday. Bah.
And I only read Legion anymore so I don't have a book to drop unfortunately, ferroboy.

Any word on what will happen to the title when Whedon leaves? I heard he was on for a 12 issue stint. I can't imagine Marvel wanting to end the title there... 'Course, then maybe Wolverine can get some respite.
Just spouting off.

I'm hoping that he doesn't leave at all...it's just too good an X-title right now!
Then again, there's the rumors that Bryan Singer is going to take over (or is that Ultimate X-Men?).

Singer's run is supposed to be on Ultimate X-Men if I'm not mistaken.
As for Whedon, I hope they keep him around. I haven't seen any hype about this being his final arc or him following through and leaving after #12, so hopefully Marvel's on the ball and are negotiating with him behind the scenes.
This book really is his and I'd much rather see where Joss would run with it than have anyone else, even a favorite writer of mine, take over. The same can be said for Cassidy as penciller.

Icey's been begging me to check this out. The trade was supposed to be out this week, but Wonderland didn't have any. I might check WaldenBooks tomorrow after work.

Dammit, icefire... Long story short, icey knows what an X-Fan I used to be and has been hounding me to check out ASTONISHING. So when I saw DCBS was offering the first trade, "GIFTED", at half-price, I ordered it. And dammit, I liked it. For all the reasons Cobie gave... it just feels like MY X-Men. The costumes. The fastball special. Cassaday's work, which has cleaned up real nice since his DESPERADOES work. And everybody sounded right. Joss seems to GET these characters; they haven't been this real since Claremont's first run... at his peak. Arghh! Aloan Davis has me buying UNCANNY again, if only for his issues... slowly, slowly they're sucking me back in... I can feel it!

Aaaaaaand Astonishing #8 becomes the first core X-book I've bought new off the rack in... forever. Well worth it. I grabbed 7 also, which with my trade purchase awhile back keeps me current. Whedon's writing had me in stitches in spots, especially throughout issue 7 (see my sig! ) --Wolvie's NONthoughts while fighting "Godzilla" and the FF's cameo also. With the ending to 7, 8's reveal wasn't too surprising, though I can't wait to find out WHY. I can't believe I'm buying the "X" again...

Welcome back to the fold The series has been excellent, and I really want Whedon on for a 50 issue run! This is the first time ever for me that I can hardly wait for the next issue of an X-Books (I read Claremont's run at clips of 10-20 by having the back issues handy), and I can't handle the anticipation!

It's like Joss read my mind for what made the X-Men great.

Didn't I tell ya about the Wolvie/Petey Fastball Special in #6? Didn't get all choked up? Quite suddenly, this is *my* X-Men again...

One of the best scenes showing how cool Cyclops *can* be, with the right writer writing him.
(A friend shared it with me, I'm still awaiting my shipment)
