At this moment, I'm turning to jelly. Does that mean I'd go well with toast, too?

Mac N Tosh were heavily developed by Art Davis. Sadly, he was demoted from director to animator before he could direct "A Ham in a Role", which Bob McKimson inherited. At least Davis was able to return to directing in the late 60s at DePatie-Freleng, where he made some of the best Pink Panther shorts.

The over-politeness of Mac and Tosh, the Goofy Gophers, goes back to two much earlier characters, Alphonse and Gaston . The Wikipedia article also names Franklin Pangborn and Edward Everett Horton as influences. These two character actors made careers of playing "sissies", which, for many years, were the closest thing to openly gay characters Hollywood would allow.

Alphonse and Gaston were also the inspiration for the assassins from LSH v4 #2.

I'm not overly knowledgeable of early cartoon strip history by any means, but my favorite of the earliest "funnies" is Mutt and Jeff. They are perhaps the most famous, and also the first daily newspaper strip, I believe, so that they themselves spurred a whole plethora of their own imitators.

Mutt & Jeff was also Max Gaine's favorite comic strip, which is why he secured the rights for Dell to produce reprints and then All-American Comics; Mutt & Jeff was All-American's top seller prior to the merger with National.

I remember rerading the Mutt & Jeff strip in the Boston Globe when I was young. On Sunday, Mutt & Jeff was on the front page of the funnies section with the spin-off Sunday strip Cicero's Cat underneath (Cicero was Mutt's son).

I don't remember "Cicero's Cat". I think it had ended by the time I was reading. I remember the cover of the Sunday Boston Globe with "Andy Capp" and "Mutt and Jeff". The other paper, at the time called The Boston Herald-American, featured "Peanuts" and "Blondie" on the front page of the Sunday edition.

My favorite of the extant comic strips is Mutts. At least there's something from my state of origin I can be proud of, along with Andy Bey and Wayne Shorter. cool

I don't really read any online or newspaper strips regularly.

But not that long ago, Lancerealm and Quis both made some comments about newspaper strips from the past they had bought (I forget what threads and what strips) that kind of got me interested. I'm thinking of buying the Dick Tracy and Popeye collections in the future when I get a little extra cash.

BTW, I'd totally buy an ongoing reprint comic strip title in comic book format if a publisher ever published one (like in the Golden Age).

The Popeye of Elzie Segar's original "Thimble Theatre" strip is very different from the Popeye of the animated cartoons. Olive's brother, Castor Oyl, is a major character in the comics and Bluto/Brutus is a peripheral character at best. Popeye's real nemesis in the strips in the Sea Hag. The 1980 film with Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall comes close to capturing the flavor of the original strips, but not quite.

Have not read daily comics for years. Nothing really grabs me anymore. Mutts is good, and I usually get a chuckle out of various ones here and there...

Active LMB character is still Beast Boy.

I read the Wall St. Journal everyday for work purposes. It could benefit from a comics section. Trust.

I haven't read the comics section in years, but when I was in grade school and junior high I remember enjoying Peanuts, Bloom County, Calvin & Hobbes, Sally Forth, LuAnn, The Phantom, Dick Tracy, Rip Kirby, Flash Gordon, Spider-Man, and others that I can't recall offhand.

Do newspapers still carry the Phantom, Dick Tracy or Flash Gordon? Because that would be awesome.

I know King Features owns Flash Gordon, Phantom and Mandrake but I don't know what papers they syndicate for.
