...but they turned out to be Super-Heroes who invited him to join their super-hero club, but the he was rejected because his powers turned out not to be super enough?
I'm talking, of course, about the Galactons from Superman #223!

""Convolluted" is definitely the word for it! It feels like they just scrambled together a bunch of other stories. The fact that the first third of it is basically an Adv. 247 homage surprised me, as I'd never heard of it before randomly stumbling across it yesterday l.
I looked it up too and - yeah, it's a bit weird. That first part with all three gals each saying hello to Superman in his Clark Kent identity is an obvious homage to ADV 247 as you said EDE, but then it really goes off in a different direction. Very convoluted plot.
Shame. I'm sure Kal would have looked good in his matching tasselled outfit.
Blue and yellow were already taken, so his would have had to be red, to go with the theme.
Surely there must have been some time in the 60s when there was a perhaps imaginary story with Supes wearing tassels? Can't find one though. Maybe his groovy son back in those 60s Superman/Batman's sons stories.

Yeah I thought the Krypton Man outfit was pretty good. Ordway was it? (Based on Byrne's Kryptonian design)

Absolutely. Had to be triggering some memories for him.
