1996 was a year of many changes for me. SO I changed things up this go-round with a list of the TOP 100 MTV VIDEOS of 1996... MTV became just as important to making a song a hit as the radio, before tossing it all aside in favor of becoming another regular TV network, but in 1996 they were still big into videos. I found their chart to be more diverse than the Billboard chart for 1996. How many of these do you remember?

Nada Surf made # 39 on the MTV chart with POPULAR. It's a pretty prime example, to me, of the difference in a radio-friendly song and an MTV-friendly song of that era.

1996
I turned 32 years old and David and I celebrated our eighth year together. We both had good jobs and sold the old country house for a new condo with loft in town. Friends and family were close. We eagerly worked to get out the vote for Clinton reelection campaign. Yuppie paradise. The rebel years and angst were gone and music was at a more mellow folksy place for me that doesn't appear to have made MTV's playlist. I do remember having fun with Morisette's debut album - mainly because so many people found her offensive. I so wanted them to lighten up. My nephew was in high school, and I encouraged his infatuation with the Smashing Pumpkins in hopes that it might steer him away from some of the redneck influences in his life. The Fugees "Killing Me Softly" cover was beautiful and worked its way into my soul. Oasis caught my interest, and I really did find myself mentally asking "Where were you while were getting high?" of some of the straight laces who had managed to work their way into my world. Tracy Chapman made something of a comeback and it was good to have her back. Always a Chili Peppers fan, but disappointed in their efforts during this period.

Shortly after posting the above, I got in the car to run some errands. Champagne Supernova came on the radio. Isn't it ironic? Don't you think? That's not irony?!? Lighten up.

There's a lot of Bush and No Doubt on the list, and they definitely played a big role in my 1996.

In 1996, I was in my final year of grad school and immersed in Irish drama, Arthurian legends, and a screenplay I was writing for my portfolio. I listened to the radio but paid little attention to songs unless they really stood out. As a result, I recognize fewer than 10 songs on either list.
Either 1996 was a bland year for music or I'm old. (Probably the latter.)

1996: Doing my boring mailroom gig for the sixth year in a row, still co-renting a second floor walk-up/duplex with the other crazy cat lady.
Not much else sticks out in my mind. I would have been buying alternative comics, still, but no superhero stuff. I would have been trying to draw and write comics, most of which are mercifully consigned to the trash now.
I was still buying old music on cassette. I don't even think I had my own CD player until after I co-purchased my first house. That was still a year off.
My consuming passion at this time was MST3K, along with re-watching WB cartoons on Saturday morning. I probably heard some of these songs in the mailroom at work, but otherwise I wouldn't have paid them much attention.

In 1996, I was the title character of the Morrissey song "The Girl Least Likely To," writing furiously but getting nowhere, with an unhealthy aversion to criticism and an even more unhealthy aversion to socializing. I wanted to break into comics, but at the same time I was repulsed by what was happening in comics at the time. Little did I know that everything would come crashing down around me the next year, leaving the rest of the 90s to a slow, gradual recovery and a re-acquaintance with the world outside.
The only songs on those lists that I liked are the ones by Garbage.

Actually, taking a better look at the lists, I did find one other one that I liked:
76. As I Lay Me Down » Sophie B. Hawkins

13. Always Be My Baby -- Mariah Carey 15. Macarena -- Los Del Rio 45. Counting Blue Cars -- Dishwalla 63. It's Coming Back to Me Now -- Celine Dion
I first encountered Always Be My Baby because of American Idol's David Cook. I never actually bothered to listen to Mariah Carey's version until now... And I prefer David Cook's.
Ah, the Macarena. Considering all the local shows at that time had all their celebrities dancing to it... Sigh.
Of course I know Celine Dion's song... it pops up every so often when we do karaoke.
The only reason I know Counting Blue Cars is because this girl I used to like recommended it to me. Nothing came out of that, though.

Lots of cool Garbage, No Doubt, Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers on that first list. The second, not so much...
Tha Crossroads by Bone Thugs & Harmony is one of my favorite rap songs. Funky video, too.
I had almost forgotten Hootie & the Blowfish even existed. I remember an interview with Garbage asking where they had gotten their name, and they joked that it was the only one left, that the recording company makes a list of names each year, and everyone they sign has to choose one of them, and when they got there to sign, all that was left was 'Garbage' and 'Hootie & the Blowfish,' and (at the time, Hootie was super-popular), 'they apparently chose the wrong one.'
