Well, I've been working a crush on Joel McHale for years, and that was all before I knew how HOT be looked in undies! Freakin' sweet! The man can rock old-school gym shorts too.
Yes, this week's episode continued the upward trend for COMMUNITY on Thursdays/NBC. It's humble yet promising beginning has blossomed into full-frontal funnery you don't wanna miss. Please stop not watching it.
GOOD NEWS-- it has been confirmed by EW.COM that NBC's entire Thursday night comedy block has been renewed for next season, REJOICE!
So, what have you to say about White Abed? Or Leonard, the latest minor recurring character standout (alongside such luminaries as Star-Burns)?
Who is happy that Chevy Chase found this vehicle and is back at last?
Share your love of Britta, Annie, Shirley, Troy and the whole gang!

Community is awesome!!!
The Christmas episode alone should make anyone a fan of the series ...
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Abed (really the character playing him) is genius. His Batman impression literally had my laughing my ass off.
Troy is also comic genius. The final bits with Abed (as I said in the other thread) are my favorite. I've seen the actor who plays Troy do some stand-up (not live, on TV) and its hilarious.
Annie is also awesome. She's on Mad Men where she's completely serious and very likeable. Here, she really shines. I loved the episode where her and Jeff had awkward romantic moments.
Britta is totally hot but they do a good job giving you reasons to find her annoying.
And of course, my favorite is the Asian Spanish teacher, who is hilarious in everything he's in. I don't know his real name but all I know is I want him to be in every show and every movie I ever watch hereafter.

Just watched the pool episode ... great spotlight on Abed ...
Posted by MLLASH on :
Actually I think Abed is cute, quite cute in his way. Troy too. Tiny-nips Vaughn also. I love that they've made it ok to call out a guy's tiny nips. I mean, whoever would have thought this would be okay to do? Heehee!
Shirley is awesome, I love, adore, l'amour Annie and Britta both rocks and sucks and is generally outstanding in one extreme or other. Her character is NOT an easy one to pull off. The actress deserves an EMMY nod (along with Abed).
I really need to learn the REAL names of the folks who play these characters other than Joel and Chevy (who both ALSO deserve EMMY nods!!)
Plus the long list of 2nd tier characters (and we all know how I love 2nd tier characters) is ASTOUNDING.
The pool episode has easily been my favorite of a long run of favorite episodes.

"Getting rid o' Britta, I'm gettin' rid o' the B.(she's a G.D.B...)" Great, now that's going to be in my head all day long....
This is a great show! I love watching each episode a few times during the week, and not all funny shows bear repeat viewing. The show started off a bit too much with each episode about Jeff having to choose between being selfish or doing the right thing. (no surprise, he would eventually do the right thing) But now that they've dropped any pretense of a story, they're just letting loose with the funny - which might not be a good thing for every show (I'm talking to you "How I Met Your Mother") - but luckily, the writing is strong enough for it to work.
Star-burns is definitely the breakout star though...
Posted by ActorLad on :
I don't get to watch it as often as I like (due to usually working on Thursdays) but I enjoy it when I do!
Posted by MLLASH on :
Well tonight's ep wasn't super-hilarious but I did enjoy the Pierce/Jeff friendship/family message.
The whole Troy's Nana/Britta thing didn't work for me.
Star-Burns' kid HAS to be his real-life son!
And Kathryn McPhee looks nice as a blonde, though I do love my brown-haired girls...
Posted by SharkLad on :
I think the last two episodes were shown out of order ... Jeff said something about meeting the old man in the pool class's kid on Family Day last week ... and he was flirting with the hot chick in the pool class too before it was shown he got dumped ... sorry to be a continuity cop ... I just thought that was odd ...
Posted by MLLASH on :
Just watched Thursday's ep. I love that they now call Star-Burns that name to his face.
Nice moments for Jeff, Peirce and Shirley this week. It was fun.

OK I just watched this past Thursday's ep on the DVR, and I believe I can state quite frankly and without hyperbole that not only was it the best episode of COMMUNITY ever, it was also the best episode of ~ANY~ TV show ever.

I guess I need to check this out.

OH YOU DO. For the episodes of Joel McHale in his undies if nothing else...
Even without that I love this show!

I have set it to record!

WOW. That was amazing!

Over on EW.Com they are playing "name the movie references" in Thursday night's fantastic episode... I deifitely got the 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead and Scarface references...
it didn't feel like a sitcom at all...
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
The Goodfellas chicken fingers scene is perhaps the greatest achievement in television history!
Posted by Mattropolis on :
I will say that the paintball epsiode was simply brilliant. Having never watched an episode before, I knew exactly who each character was, what their role was and they still managed to move the overall plot forward.
Posted by MLLASH on :
Cobie, that was a great TV moment but *TELL ME* you didn't miss this past Thursday's episode which was, I feel, the greatest 30 minutes in TV history!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
*choke*
I did! This may call for a watch Hulu at work moment!

"And now, crickets"
Posted by MLLASH on :
It was of course much more low-key than last week's incredible 30-minute sitcom golden masterpiece, but there was stuff going on.
Didn't like how Jeff Winger (McHale) was soooo mean to Annie but it fit his character.
Not even a hint of a mention between last week's Jeff/britta hookup? intersting and for the best most likely.
"You could be a PLUMBER!!!" It was cute.
Senor Chang's revelation was quite unexpected... but it looks like they found a way to give him an even bigger role next season as a student, so that's good.
My DVR always cuts off a minute or so TOO soon--
--can someone tell me what exactly Pierce did to get everyone a passing grade? I bet he sexed her!! (NOT sexted-- SEXED )
Posted by DrakeB3004 on :
They weren't specific, but yeah - Pierce gave the teacher a little sexo for an easy test.
It's interesting to see how they're coming up with reasons to keep the cast together as the years go by. I don't see why they need to have one tv season equal a school year. They're just backing themselves into a corner, assuming the show goes on.
Posted by Mattropolis on :
I enjoyed it.

Any good extras on the DVD?
Posted by MLLASH on :
A KICK-PUNCHER comic book for just one 90 minutes of DVD stuff too. Just buy it, I might want to watch when I come visit
Posted by MLLASH on :
Wow, there were some serious repercussions from the season 1 finale there!
LOVED Jeff and Britta's little fake love affair thing. Cracked me smooth up.
Zombie fans: this Halloween will be a zombie episode... I knew there had to be fans on the writing staff after the 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead homages in the now-legendary paintball episode!
Posted by Dev Em on :
I gotta start watching this...since I work at a Community College. Bet some of my days are odder than the show.
Posted by DrakeB3004 on :
I can't wait for the DVD! My wife and I plan on a marathon viewing, where we eat "baggles" and chicken fingers throughout the day. Can't wait to see the "Kickpuncher" comic either!
I loved the season opener! The fight in the study room was muy dramatico! I imagine their new class is going to used as a tool to explore the group dynamics even further.
Am I the only one who thought the trick answer to the class assignment was going to be "The BOX is the most important tool?" (my wife has long said that "the recepticle" is man's most important invention) Betty White's "hatchet-launching crossbow/noose" is pretty rad though...

Posted by ActorLad on :
Yeah, I liked it. I think it was a much stronger ep than this weeks. Speaking of the Halloween ep, did anyone else think that Shirley's costume could of been Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros?

Chang looked like a bleach-topped Nightcrawler. Crazy!
Posted by MLLASH on :
Such weekly excellence... I sometimes feel unworthy.
Loved everything about this Valentine episode, though it was light on Shirley.
Posted by SharkLad on :
Looks like Jeff's heart is growing three times larger... between the AD&D episode and this week's, Jeff is becoming a regular softie...
Posted by MLLASH on :
Just watched this season's first episode again tonight (I save 'em on the DVR as long as I can 'til the DVD comes out), and was reminded just how big an ass Jeff can be! Man that episode got UGLY in the middle...!
Since I'm up too dang early, I guess I'll watch the rest of the epiosdes.
Posted by MLLASH on :
Speaking of Jeff-as-ass... he literally pulled no punches with Pierce this past Thursday.
Another great ep. Pierce certainly showed he is not to be trifled with.
Posted by SharkLad on :
Love that this show is willing to take all kinds of chances... this week's episode with Pierce in the hospital had nothing to do with the basic premise of the show... plus Levar Burton singing Reading Rainbow and Troy's meltdown... hilARious

Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Great ep and I love the amount of heart the show has sometimes.
Pierce is a character I generally loathe but usually every episode I come to appreciate why he's there.
The Jeff / Britta scene where they roleplay "Jeff's Dad" and "Britta's Dad" was hilarious.
Posted by MLLASH on :
Another solid gold outing from COMMUNITY this week, perfect from the get-go with Pierce's "sizemore" joke!
BEST lower-tier character intro'd this episode: Vickie! She rocks! Her feud with Pierce was hilarious.
WORST lower-tier character intro'd this episode: Magnitude. Hope he never pop-pops back up on a later repisode. Bleah!
Always nice to see Garrett and Leonard. Had no idea Star-Burns was a drug dealer.
Loved Abed's side-non-romance with the secret service agent!
Posted by Legion Tracker on :
This was the second (at least) episode with Magnitude. He was in the episode in which homeless Chang moved himself into Jeff's apartment. Magnitude showed up at the partay.
Posted by MLLASH on :
He must have been really forgettable to me in that episode, as I didn't recall him at all.
Posted by MLLASH on :
problem: boredom
solution: this season's episodes of Community on the DVR. Lates!!!
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
You know a show is great when you find yourself pausing just so you can read all the various text floating across the screen during the fake news broadcasts.
Posted by MLLASH on :
After rewatching this season's episodes, I think the Halloween/zombie ep and the Dungeons & Dragons ep tie as my favorites so far. Of course, I love all the episodes.
I now realize why I didn't remember Magnitude from that episode-- I was too in love with Paige, Britta's new not-lesbian makeout friend/enemy!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I think the D&D one is my favorite but just about every episode delivers.
This show will definitely be in syndication one day like the Office or at least should be!
Posted by SharkLad on :
Just got around to watching the election episode... pure Abed brilliance... Danny Pudi deserves an Emmy or even an Oscar ... maybe a Golden Globe...
Posted by MLLASH on :
I've always loved Abed, but I think the moment I realize this actor is an ABSOLUTE GENIUS is back in season 1 when he assumed the persona of a sexy gigolo-type seducer and just about had (iirc) Annie out of her panties. In that moment, he was FREAKING HOT. How many people as quirky and odd-looking could pull off FREAKING HOT like that?
Yes he deserves an Emmy. The whole show does, it is SO streets ahead!

Netflix.ca just picked up the first season. We watched the first episode and it was fun. Though the lead character didn't work for us, the supporting cast were really funny. We'll queue up episode 2 later this week.
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Fantastic ep. this week!
Posted by MLLASH on :
Last week's episode was probably my least favorite episode of the entire run. Probably I just need to give it another view. Chang being pathetic doesn't work for me, maybe; I think I prefer him as the power-tripping badass super-jerk.
BUT! After finishing this week's episode, I can again say:
This show is so fantastic, so far above most other shows out there that I feel privledged, honored and even a bit special to get to view it every week. I even feel pity for those who are missing out on this awesomeness...

Posted by SharkLad on :
So glad not to be amongst the pitiable... such an awesome show... agree with you about last week's episode... I'm not crazy about the "Who's Shirley's Babydaddy" plot... they still have to find a better way of integrating Chang into the group...
Posted by Blacula on :
I just down-loaded the whole first season of this show. Won't be able to watch it until my assignments are all out of the way in a few weeks but I look forward to seeing what all the excitement is about with this show.
Posted by MLLASH on :
Yay! Soon I won't have to pity Blacula anymore!
Sharky, you're right, they just need to let him in the group already... he really really gets on my nerves when he's pathetic... but I sure do love power-mad nutjob Chang...
Posted by SharkLad on :
"Magic user, baby" Chang from the AD&D episode is my favorite variety of Chang...
Posted by Dave Hackett on :
Second episode was just OK. Surprising because it was Chevy Chase episode, but a lot of the humor fell flat and Joel McHale is just not likable. I know he's playing an unlikable jerk who's supposed to be coming around, but he's just not pulling it off and isn't recommending the series very well. Does it really get better as it goes?
Posted by SharkLad on :
It does... it really, really does... first season episodes about the debate club, paintball, pool, chicken fingers and Christmas, to name a few, are hilarious... give it some more time... Joel will grow on you too...
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Halloween episode, complete with Batman impression is beyond hilarious.
The chicken tender episode is 30 minutes of pure brilliance.
But the paintball episode? Perhaps the greatest 30 minutes in the history of network television. I believe all the networks should just quit permanently because it can never be topped.
Posted by MLLASH on :
Stick with it, for sure... I simply cannot imagine someone not growing to love this show and the entire cast (to one extent or another).
And we are not exaggerating about the chicken fingers episode and so many others.
And Cobie is right, the paintball episode is the single most perfect episode of any tv show ever.
Posted by Dave Hackett on :
Third episode was much better and had a more ensemble feel to it (ostensibly it was an Abed episode, but there was enough meat for everyone). So far the best parts of the show have been the throwaway bits during the credits, but there were few laugh out loud bits scattered throughout as well. I'm back on board now and looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Posted by DrakeB3004 on :
I'm glad that after the "stunt-a-palooza" that was the first half of the season that they're focusing more on the characters and their interactions. I think this show, more than all others, tends to focus on disharmony within the group rather than the group dealing with the "whacky situation of the week." (see the afore mentioned "stunt-a-palooza")
I'm glad to see more Chang lately, but I agree that he's funnier when in a position of power.
Posted by Dave Hackett on :
OK, we're now hooked plowing through 2 episodes a night. The Halloween episode and the debate were both great. The episode where Joel moves in with Abed was just OK (but the Pierce/Vaughn stuff was really funny). Glad we stuck with it.
Posted by Dave Hackett on :
Xmas episode was great, but the follow-up flopped a little. Even Community can't make Jack Black funny.
Posted by MLLASH on :
I did like it when they were mean to him though!
Glad you're enjoying it!!
Posted by Dave Hackett on :
OK, so we've really enjoyed the show until this point, but I honestly wouldn't have said it is as completely hysterical as the hype led us to believe. Then tonight we watched the Abed's secret admirer/Jeff playing pool episode. I thought we would wet ourselves it was so insanely funny. Everything from Bagels through to the Bert & Ernie ending was laugh out loud funny.
Posted by MLLASH on :
being the best isn't always hysterical-- it's smart and clever too...
You still have some excellent episodes in front of you!
(I love that this is highlighted!!!)
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Apparently Josh Holloway will be in this year's season finale, which is all kinds of awesome!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I forgot how funny the Abed secret admirer / Jeff playing pool episode was! Man, I've got to get the DVD season and rewatch.
Posted by Dave Hackett on :
When he decides to become "someone who could approach a girl" and goes into Vampire/Lizard mode, my wife nearly hurt herself she couldn't stop laughing. We had to rewind a few minutes to get the jokes we missed.
Posted by MLLASH on :
Yeah that was a hysterical scene!!
Ooooh, I really enjoyed this week's low-key episode... I think I enjoyed most the surprise ending with Pierce's ladyfriend.
I hope she sticks around.

Posted by MLLASH on :
From your use of "unfortunately", I'm gathering you enjoyed the series... so glad!
Season 2 has also been excellent... the Halloween episode is a 22-minute zombie movie that rivals the coolest eps of season 1, and the Christmas ep is shot in old-timey "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"-style claymation! and Dungeons and Dragons episode... oh, it's all such good stuff.
To be fair, there has been 1 "clunker" episode this season that I personally feel was a first for this series, but perhaps I will feel differently if I make myself re-watch the episode.

Yes he deserves an Emmy. The whole show does, it is SO streets ahead!
Abed wasn't just impersonating a gigolo, he was channeling Don Draper from "Mad Men" and in true "Community-Meta" style, the actress who plays Annie is on "Mad Men" which makes it funnier when Annie says that Don Draper is the sexiest character on that show because her character is married to Don's coworker.

About this season: What the heck happened to that crazy doctor-who-makes-pottery-with-the-perfect-teeth guy that Annie was into and from whom Jeff was supposed to "learn how to be good for my own selfish reasons"? It seemed like they were setting something up with that storyline only to have it dropped. I hope they pick up on it again if only for closure's sake.

Season 3 has seen NO diminishing of the greatness of COMMUNITY. It is still smart and it is still hilarious. EW called Parks and Recreation (which I also LOVE) the smartest show on TV, but I think COMMUNITY has it beaten.
Speaking of EW, this year they are FINALLY doing weekly recaps, which are often as much fun as the show itself!
Okay, the alternate reality ep (which I just saw yesterday) should win some kind of prize. It's not just my favorite ep of the show so far, I think it may be one of the best eps of anything I've ever seen-- EVER!
(And I suspect that somebody on the writing staff really dug the "Poker Game Alt. Reality" ep of ST:TNG. I can't prove it, of course...)

Yep, that was some EXCELLENT television. Season 3 so far is topping both 1 and 2.
Cle, did you catch the 2nd episode of this season, I think it was? It's the one where they even do an "Earth 2" type concept during Model U.N. Very JSA!!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
The way that Earth-2 episode ends (the solution Annie & Abed come up with) is really just pure genius. I so wish I was doing a model UN now.

Tonight's Halloween episode continued the character-driven comedy that COMMUNITY has mastered. Season 3 is streets ahead of excellent.
I hope it runs as long as the SImpsons!!

Last night they were all funny, especially Annie (who I love) but for some reason Shirley just nailed it for me. I usually find her the least funny, but she was hilarious.
And is Britta getting dorkier as the show goes on? It might be making her hotter.

Britta *is* getting dorkier, I love it!!

Speaking of the prize Cle mentions above, if COMMUNITY is again shut out of the Emmys this year, I call TOTAL BULLSHIT.
Though I am glad Parks & Rec and 30 Rock get Emmy love (and Cougar Town- which is also excellent ensemble fun- has been recognized by other award ceremonies), it is FAR PAST TIME for Community to score an Emmy nod. Abed, Annie and Pierce for acting awards and the show as a whole for best comedy.
THIS I DEMAND.

BTW, I can't wait to see Goodman come back again. He's been one of my favorite actors since half past forever.

So... after the holidays COMMUNITY will be going on a hiatus of unspecified length while NBC moves some shows around.
UP ALL NIGHT is getting the equivalent of a promotion by joining Parks and Rec, The Office and the returning 30 Rock on the Thursday night lineup.
Whitney-- which is unfathomably getting higher ratings than both Community and Parks & Rec, and is considered a hit *shudders* ...is moving over to Wednesday nights to help bolster NBCs lineup there.
Looks like COMMUNITY will probably return later this season-- possibly when one of the newer shows fails miserably on their new night/time-slot.
Thursday nights with no COMMUNITY is going to be rough on me come January... I'm Abedlike that way... but I will watch it no matter what night NBC sticks it on when it does return.

While I think UP ALL NIGHT is cute, it is NO Community...
Posted by cleome45 on :
Up All Night is still finding its voice, but it's coming along.
Because of the comparably smaller main cast, I tend to think of it as less "sprawly" than Community, but in both cases I think the casting is good and the chemistry between the leads is a pleasure to watch.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Bah! Whitney sucks and Up All Night isn't on the same level. Community needs to exist!
Posted by Blacula on :
So I just finished watching season 2 of this show and OhMyGod is it FUNNY!!! I ended up having to buy the first season too after my computer crashed and I lost all the episodes I'd downloaded and I am now going to lend them out to all my friends to get them hooked on this show too.
That paintball two-parter to end the season on was absolutley AMAZING! The first season's paintball episode was really great and then this one just took it to a whole new level. All the Western touches in the first part and then the Star Wars ones in the second had me in stitches. I totally second Cobie's shout out of Vicki's line about dancing on the table-top ("This is the only life I know") as being the line of the season. SO HILARIOUS!
I rewatched the entire first season straight after I'd finished it and I'm going to do it again with the second. There are so many great jokes and scenes that are just as funny the second time around.
All that said, there have been a few clunker episodes each season. I really hated that Psychology test storyline from the first season where Abed foiled Annie and Professor Duncan's test. I don't remember being a big fan of that Jeff pool-class episode either. This season had that Chang in jail episode and especially that Pulp Fiction/My Dinner with Andre episode that didn't work for me. So many of the others have been absolute gold though.
As for characters, Jeff and Annie are probably my favourites of the main bunch - but I love all the minor/side characters too, ESPECIALLY Dean Pelton! I don't think I have ever not found him funny in a scene.
Which brings me to my one big problem with the show -
Shirley. I don't think I have ever found her funny in a scene. She almost drags the whole show down for me. I have to fast-forward through almost every line she has when I rewatch first season episodes. I feel she became more likeable somehow in the second season but I still don't find anything about her, her storylines, or the actress playing her funny.
No show is perfect though so I can overlook that minor annoyance and appreciate the really top-notch creative/comedic brilliance that the rest of the show displays.
Wish season 3 would hurry up and finish over there so I can get that DVD too.

What, no comments about this week's episode?
Actually kind of "meh" for me.
I did think the anime foosball sequence was funny. And the ending with 'lil Jeff and 'lil Shirley walking off together was cute.
And now Annie seems to have the hots for abed. The only guy she hasn't had a crush on is Pierce.
Speaking of which we are *way* overdue for a Chevy-centric episode...
Posted by MLLASH classic on :
It was kinda meh, but meh Community is still better than just about everything else... I'm still in shock from the upcoming hiatus...
I do love when Troy goes all squealy, as in "You were supposed to tone us down!"
Posted by KidChaos on :
I think this episode suffered from not having seńor chang or the dean. They tend to spice things up.
And I demand more Britta, who is my favorite character this season.
Posted by Eryk Davis Ester on :
Yeah, I have to say that I liked the basic idea of the episode, but it kind of fell flat.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Too much Shirley--she's best used more judiciously I think to make her funny or heart warming.
Agree about Chang and the Dean. I'm still cracking up over the Dean going crazy director a few weeks ago.
Posted by MLLASH classic on :
Yeah the ep def. suffered from the lack of Dean and Britta!
Posted by cleome45 on :
I loved seeing Shirley in this capacity, actually. Seeing her sordid past as "Big Cheddar" kind of opened up a new little window on her personality.
Posted by MLLASH classic on :
I'll agree with that... I'm probably being too harsh on the episode. I think it was mainly the switch to 'Japanimation', which would have wowed on any other show, just fell flat with me on Community which is already head and shoulders above everything else. The episode didn't really need that bit of extra.
Aww, heck! Any ep with Abed as Batman is a winner!! Troy forcing himself to play along with Annie's wacky scheme was adorable.
I can't not love this show!!!

A delightful recap of last night's episodes... and the comment section is full of Community-lovers in utter turmoil about this being the end for the foreseeable future:
Danny Pudi and Yvette Nicole Brown (Abed and Shirley) made awesome cameos on "Chuck" last week. Pudi was playing a "replacement Lester" and absolutely nailed Vik Sahay's mannerisms. It was really funny.
I guess Ryan "Captain Awesome" McPartlin was also on Community earlier this season as well (still waiting for Season 2 on Netflix).

I really like "Up All Night." Aside from the first couple of earlier shows, its humor is mostly character-based, the leads are all very likable and it doesn't try SO HARD to be clever like "Community" does, yet manages to be pretty funny.

though ratings Juggernaut AMERICAN IDOL and some new Ashley Judd show got higher total numbers than Community, please take note:

Posted by DrakeB3004 on :
While I am glad "Community" is back, I find myself tired of their antics. (I feel like a broken record) I prefer when they stick to the characters and their lives in a more human way. Last season seemed a bit split-personality, where certain episodes were "character episodes," some were "we're going to be sooooo clever now" episodes and the latter seemed to overnumber the former. I'll keep watching though because they are damn clever sometimes

Also, I may never look at apples the same way again...
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
The Dean's reaction to seeing anti-depressant Jeff was beyond hilarious!
Posted by matlock on :
I realize the value of moving the characters forward, like having Troy realize that Abed's near inablity to distinguish fantasy from reality is becoming a problem. But sometimes I just want them to make with the funny. At least enough to keep people interested enough for 6 seasons and a movie.

Subway- the original Rick version- is my new favorite character. I HATE THE NEW SUBWAY, Blah! That bastard! I hope Rick/Subway finds his way back to Greendale! *dreamiest of sighs!!*
I love episodes that feature a lot of the 2nd-tier characters (even Magnitude, whom I have warmed to) and this one fit that bill.
I also firmly approve of the introduction of Kim. You remember Kim... right...?
Kim and Todd need to team up!
These are dark days indeed for Troybed, though...

I'd already loved Joel McHale from THE SOUP but I admit Chevy Chase was probably my biggest initial draw to check out COMMUNITY when it premiered. My Dad *always* loved Chevy Chase movies and I have fond memories of enjoying those films with him.
So I doubly hate to hear of these backstage dramas involving Chevy. I can understand that it probably IS difficult for him, being the oldest star of the show (not counting Leonard, LOL).
Interesting backstage COMMUNITY drama (also some good news too) revealed HERE:
I honestly don't know what to make of Chevy Chase or what he says. I can't tell if he's joking when he asks why would anyone care if Pierce came back. If he isn't joking, it makes me a little sad to think HE thinks no one cares about the Pierce character.

The good news: It was still NBC's most-viewed and highest-rated show of the night:
Posted by MLLASH's back on :
D'awwww! Tonight's episode was really sweet, and felt like one of the most balanced characters-wise I've ever seen. Everyone seemed to have their proper amount of screentime and funny lines.
Posted by matlock on :
Much better this week than last (for me.) I was just uneasy with equating Troy & Abed's fued with, you know, the Civil War. I get that it was a Ken Burns spoof, and it worked great on that level. But spoofing Ken Burns might have done better in a sports related episode, a la "Baseball." Plus the resolution of Troy/Abed was wrapped up a little too quick. I'm guessing it's not totally over.
This week was a good return to a stand-alone story. I guess it moved along the John Goodman subplot but beyond that it was just good old fun for once. Jeff's obsession with Blade, Pierce and Chang, and even an appropriately funny use of Annie's past issues as she tried to help Britta. Well done!
Posted by KidChaos on :
Tonight looks like it will be a must-see episode.
OnDemand describes it as:
'Annie and Abed spend some quality time together in the Dreamatorium for a stimulation of "Inspector Spacetime". The exercise takes a turn toward the serious, however, with examination and insight into Abed's personality.'
Also, *finally*, a new episode of Parks and Rec.

"Those aren't thumbs..."
Posted by Dave Hackett on :
First few episodes were a mixed bag. I didn't like the Abed as Jesus episode, which to me had the most potential and just fell a little flat. Pierce's dead Mom and Jeff's law School buddy episodes weren't up to snuff for me. I really liked the KFC/Space episode with the new school flag. The Zombie episode was fun, but seemed like there was a lot of potential they missed (though my wife laughed out loud when Chang threw the skate and got Annie bit). Betty White made and otherwise forgettable first episode (and the Troy/Abed/Betty rap was great).
Posted by MLLASH's back on :
Wow... I thought Season 2 was very very strong from the get-go and am surprised to hear some of these criticisms, especially the missed potential of the zombie episode? I found that to be 21 minutes of complete zombie/viral plague comedy genius...

"Jeff" as the sexxxeeee TV doctor? Priceless.
Posted by Dave Hackett on :
Started into Disc Two and the things are starting to click again. The pen episode was great for a "Bottle" episode, and the Trampoline/Bitches episode was pure awesome. We had to pause to see all of Abed's Robocop readouts. The Conspiracy/Blanket Fort episode was also really funny, especially the endless shootings, which could have been annoying, but they played it extremely well. We both think that Annie's comedic timing and play have been really strong this season.

So I'm thinking to myself, "Why the heck would they cast Malcolm Jamal Warner as Shirley's husband? He's way too young." Then I realised, no, no he's not, I've just gotten very old.

No mention of the surprise DEATH at the end?
According to Dan Harmon, this death will affect the rest of this season in a big way! Read about it here:
I was just weirded out when the Dean appeared in regular clothes during the "L&O" episode. For a minute, I thought we were in for another parallel universe story...
Posted by MLLASH's back on :
It was hysterical when Garrett got pepper-sprayed!
Also notable: the return of the ugly yet really hot pizza delivery guy... the pizza delivery guy who is so hot and ugly that you are both repulsed and turned on the whole time you make out with him!
He is now COMMUNITY's best 6th-tier character

The harried file clerk who really doesn't give a rip was a classic L&O go-to character! Neal was a good choice. And getting Leslie Hendrix to cameo as the M.E./botanist was awesome.
This week's episode was pretty good - Chang's arc this year has given him something to do beside just being a wretch. And Annie flipping out is always fun.

Honestly, only a few years ago, any show on a Friday was a definite 'pass' for me. But these days, I'll probably check in on as many eps as I can. (Luckily its only 8:30).
KC, I think the 'magic number' for syndication is the # of episodes, not the number of seasons. That being said, a fourth season usually means a show has hit that special number, which is something like 70.

I am curious to see how well it does now that it doesn't have to struggle against BIG BANG THEORY.

by the way when are we gonna see MLLASH's backside?

It was pretty awesome having three eps in one night. Each one totally different yet awesome.

SHOULD the show have ended with season 3?
Dan Harmon may come off as an asshole, he may in fact BE an asshole... but COMMUNITY seasons 1, 2 and 3 have been very much HIS vision.
He has been fired from his show. Details from the man himself:
Imo, this is much more devastating to the show than losing Chevy Chase (or some of the other actors even). Sucks.

I've heard that Dan can be a pain to work for, but when the final product is as near-genius as COMMUNITY, you've gotta set aside the time he yelled at you to rewrite a scene or whatever, and then just celebrate the excellent finished product! However-- I can understand not wanting to be yelled at too. For me, as a fan and not an insider, I just wanna see my favorite TV show maintain its quality!
However, I have further doubts that it will be able to now... writer Chris McKenna (responisble for such brilliance as this season's 'Remedial Chaos Theory' episode and the sole remaining season 1 writer) has quit now.
Have we, the fans of COMMUNITY, entered the DARKEST TIMELINE????
I will certainly be interested to see how Season 4 holds up!

Honestly, not to rain on your parade, but I've thought this season was horrible. I struggled through a bunch of episodes and think it's become so self-indulgent to become a parody of itself. (and not in a good way)
Harmon leaving actually gives me a little bot of hope that the next season will be a little more of what the show used to be in season 1.

While I hate to hear someone doesn't care for something I just adore, I can certainly see why you might feel that way. I get the whole 'pardoy of iteself' you speak of-- but I think Community's parodying of itself is sheer genius.
I think it evolved beyond its early roots into something TV has never seen before.
And I'll be rooting for it all the way through season 4, no matter what happens. I wouldn't necessarily mind a return to less meta storylines myself.

COMMUNITY *KILLS* at the EWwys (Entertainment Weekly's readers-voted version of the Emmys):
So which is the bigger kiss of death, Friday night purgatory or Mid-Season replacement? Depending on what tanks Community could get a sweet spot come January (or it could be programmed opposite a juggernaut).

Sweet spot would be the preferred outcome. NBC has already realized NOTHING is going to upset the ratings behemoth that is BIG BANG THEORY (though BBT's appeal is certainly lost on me), not even critical darling (and super-awesome) 30 ROCK:
Of major note is it will be taking the place of 30 Rock, which ends after a 13-episode season, in its old Thursday night slot. Which is great, except we know nothing on NBC can win that timeslot.
More than likely, this will be it for COMMUNITY... unless a COUGAR TOWN-esque miracle happens, and a cable network buys out the show... (After ABC cancelled Cougar Town, TBS snatched it up)

I would probably be ok with 4 years and out if this much-delayed season is on par with the first 3. One good thing about this show is that it didn't seem to need an entire season to find it's "voice." It got a little more up front with the pop culture references over the years but it didn't need a half-season to get going. "The Office" took a while to get going and went on too long. I don't want that to happen to Community.
