Tune in while you can!

Actually, I have it recording, but I'm not gonna watch it until it's done. I want to be sure I can skip all the commercials.

Enjoy it, Kid!

I only got in on the last half hour, but MAN! was I impressed. Let's just say there are a lot of surprises, even in that last half hour.

I enjoyed it. The best part for me was Pam Grier as Amanda Waller.

Posted by He Who Wanders on :

Same here. I just about had a coronary when I realized who the character was.

Posted by Jerry on :

Yeah, the casting is pure genius. I guess she is supposed to be on several episodes. The fun thing about Pam Grier is the way she turns up in the most unexpected places. Then she disappears. You forget about her, don't think of her for several years, and then- BAM - there she is on screen again. This is just such a great fit for character and actor.

The JSA story was fun. I loved, visually, the way Dr. Fate came across on the small screen. His sacrifice for John was a nice touch. The story was just a very nice melding of Golden Age, Silver Age, and Modern Age.

It's on my DVR. I'll see it when my life calms down a bit. [Smile]

Saw the last hour of this. Very nice episode.

It has been a while since I've seen Smallville. Didn't they once say that there wouldn't be any costumes on the show?

I wasn't overlly impressed with the episode. I didn't like Click Here For A Spoiler the bloodbath of JSA guys and I find it a little hard to believe that no one had heard of the JSA before.

There were some nice touches I liked Click Here For A Spoiler Ma Hunkle and the Green Lantern ring and lantern. Though I find it hard to believe that Alan Scott would give up the lantern even if he was no longer using it.

I was thrilled to watch this, and I kind of liked the Watchmenification of the JSA -- it basically worked. It was a more modern take on Levitz's McCarthy story. The casting seemed brilliant. I don't know who the actor was who played Syl Pemberton, but his look was pure gold -- a mix of Jan Michael Vincent and half a dozen other wasted 1970s action stars. Perfect!

But...having Click Here For A SpoilerDr. Fate impaled on an ice lance and my 7-year old bursting into tears -- I think I could have done without that. It's so tempting to kill the JSA characters -- they aren't the stars of the show, they're old anyway, it's a noble sacrifice, etc. It was hard to deal with, for me and the 7-year old.

And really. Smallville is just...not that good. It just has NO subtlety whatsoever. The acting is wooden, one-dimensional. The editing and scripting had huge clunks and jumps in it that messed up the pacing. It just hasn't grown at all, as a show. ICarly has more subtlety than Smallville. And I can never get past the portrayal of Clark, although at least there were glimmers here that he can become the inspiration he is supposed to be.

I agree with Quis..the prop work was really subpar. The cosmic rod, Fate's helmet, the Green Lantern, all looked like plastic. I realize they may have to be plastic, but could you maybe make them look metallic?

I also saw just the second half of the show -- it was the first time I'd seen Smallville in years.

It was cool to see members of the JSA on the small screen, but jarring to see costumed heroes in the Smallville "universe." I guess the show's been heading in that direction for years, what with Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter, but for someone who hadn't really watched since it was just Clark moving around really fast in his "regular" clothes, it felt odd and looked a bit cheesy. Costumes and props, unless they're done really well, just tend to take me out of any suspension of disbelief I'd ordinarily have.

The woman playing Stargirl was kind of cute, but not a very good actress.

And, although I thought the actor cast as Hawkman was a pretty good fit, his exaggerated, growly enunciation -- much like that of Christian Bale in the most recent Batman movies -- cracked me up a little bit. Also, Hawkman's vest-type costume looked weird, but I'm guessing that was because the actor didn't quite have the physique to pull off a shirtless Hawkman.

Amanda Waller *totally* should have been played by the woman who plays Mrs. Fredricks, from Warehouse 13. (CCH Pounder?)

Posted by Owl Lad on :

I always imagined Dr. Bailey from Gray's Anatomy the perfect look for Amanda Waller.

What about the Pine-sol lady?

CCH Pounder has provided the voice for Amanda Waller on Batman and the Justice League, but considering that she is on two shows now, Brothers and Warehouse 13, she may not have been available.

I think Ms. Grier did a fantastic job and looks even sexier now than she did when she was younger.

Didn't care for the "Batman-ing" of Carter's voice, but I could live with it.

As for the rest, color me very happy. The costumes were the best they could be on a limited tv budget, the easter eggs were plentiful, the actors did a solid job, and there is a hint that the Squad may show up soon.

I liked the fact that the JSA had "faces" and by that I mean they didn't go for pretty boy types, but actors with faces that had character and depth.

I must admit that I wondered if Black Canary was the woman that was killed in the riot and Wesley was there holding her.

Gotta say that I have to give it a lot of love. We were given quite a bit for what they could afford to put into the show. They basically built the interior of the brownstone, fate looked great, the fight scene was well done, Carter and Ollie went at it...

No, it wasn't perfect, but its light years better than anything we've ever had before with the JSA. I'll happily take it til they get a show of their own or a movie.

great stuff. I spent the entire show geeking out with my wife laughing at me because I was so happy and spazzing, and I didn't care.

Guys, we can nitpick it to death, or we can enjoy the fact that after 70 years, there's a live action JSA floating out there some where. I am gonna enjoy.

Who would've ever imagined that one day they would see MA HUNKLE on prime time television!?!

I was excited and happy to see the episode.....a lot of easter eggs, such as Michael Holt, and others. I was kind of disappointed that we did not get to see Black Canary and Black Canary II getting together....we saw B C II recently...and made no mention of JSA at all? And no Bart Allen appearing to take a look at the Flash (Bart's grandfather shares the same name)? hmmm hmmm....the plot is missing on that one!

no Sand? no Starman (Ted Knight, not Sylvester Pemberton)? I would LOVE to see the next Generation of JSA, the expanded members of LSH, and the debut of Suicide Squad in the future episodes of Smallville.

Can't wait to see Zatanna again next week!!! [Big Grin]

this has always been my problem with Smallville too ...

but at the same time ...

Sometimes, I'm still that 8 year old who practically orgasmed (pardon the image) when "Legends of the Superheroes" aired on TV in 1979 ... ultimately, "Absolute Justice" brought some joy to my increasingly cynical heart ...

I agree that "Smallville" has flaws. I rarely watch it, though I'm glad to see it's moved beyond the Clark/Lana/Lex triangle that dominated for many years. I'm also glad to see other elements of the DCU work their way into the show.

It made for an interesting contrast to watch this episode (or part of it) one week after watching the Legion episode. The Legion had to be "updated" with modern "costumes" (which, of course, is ironic since they're from the future). However, Hawkman, Dr. Fate, and Star-Spangled Kid (Stargirl?) were painstakingly recreated from the comic book versions. I never thought their costumes looked silly or phony.

The actor who played Hawkman was, as Rick noted above, not Hollywood-standard attractive; his mannerisms suggested he was a bit of a curmudgeon, yet his facial expressions and voice conveyed a sense of conviction in what he was doing. It was a different take on Hawkman than I might have expected, but it worked.

Since the show seems to be leading up to the idea of Clark fronting his own team (the JLA), I wish they'd get on with it. Dragging out plotlines too long (such as Lex and Lana) is one of the flaws that keeps me from tuning in regularly.

I enjoyed it for what it was. My only genuine complaint is about the show in general - which is that it's becoming more geeky and is missing a lot of the characterization that made it good in its earlier seasons. The main problem being that they don't know how to drag out Clark's storyarc any longer and still make it compelling. The cast members that have left the show took all the emotional content with them.

Minor quibbles:
- Starman being completely left out.
- The props looked cheap. Fate's outfit looked like a generic super-guy suit rather than influenced by the character's actual background.
- Icicle being the big bad threat. Not too impressive.

Cool stuff:
- Amanda Waller, Checkmate, the Suicide Squad!
- I like how they depicted Dr Fate's power.
- Cool shot of J'onn looking all green and Martian-y. (although I fear the only reason he's been given back his powers is so that Zod can kill him later)
- Good comparison of JSA being a family and this "JLA" being cold and too mission oriented.
- Plenty of fun Green Arrow/Hawkman bickering.

So this season is it for Smallville... a few interesting plot twists...

Click Here For A SpoilerDarkseid is slowly spreading his influence... Lionel is back thanks to an alternate universe... Lex's clone (played as a teenager again by High School Musical's Lucas Gabreel) is shaping up to take Lex's place...

Looking forward to seeing how it all turns out...

... and Entertainment Weekly is now reporting that Michael Rosenblum is coming back for the finale...

I haven't watched Smallville regularly since season three, but I'm gonna watch the finale. (especially with the real Lex back!)

Conner on Smallville!!!!

Posted by SharkLad on :

Cracked me up that Alexander ended up evolving into Conner and that he was played by the kid from "High School Musical" who played Lex as a kid a few seasons back...

I'm totally back into this show after many years away...

Cracked me up that Conner was referred to by Lois as Clark and Lex's secret 'Love Child'. I have called him that ever since the retcon that made him part Luthor.

'Dominion' episode not as exciting.

Phantom Zone, Callum Blue, Spartacus rip off.

Smallville rips off the direction from other stuff ... a few months ago there was a Matrix episode where Chloe goes into some digital mental space to save the crew.

weird.

anyways more Darkseid forshadowing.

Justin Hartley directs and Tom Welling executive produces

he he he

i wonder if that kristin kruet girl will show up.

I missed the finale, but here's the Wall Street Journal's summary/review.

Best line: "In Smallville, everyone speaks fluent greeting card."

I saw the finale, after watching every episode of the first three seasons or so and then missing everything else that came after.

Are Lana and Pete still alive? What about the various other DC super-heroes that have made appearances in Smallville continuity? I thought it would have been nice to see them put in a cameo appearance at the wedding.

The whole Apokolips-about-to-smash-into-Earth storyline was kind of silly. It's like nobody saw a planetoid-sized object hurtling toward Earth until it was as large as the Goodyear blimp in the sky. And of course its being about 500 feet away from smashing into Metropolis had no gravitational effects whatsoever on the city. And Clark could just push it back into outer space somehow -- I don't think super-strength alone is going to cut it with something of that size. Does he now have large-scale tactile telekinesis?

I thought the last scene was amusing and satisfying, if in an overly fan-pandering way. I'm not sure if I would have liked it as much if I'd been following the series religiously ever since the beginning.

Unfortunately, this could be the last of the JSA we see for a while now with this "marvelous" reboot.
