I've got a work colleague who loves her Tarot cards and she told me today she did a 'reading' for me last night - while it all sounded pleasant enough I couldn't make much sense of it. She wrote down the cards she mentioned for me and have spent a couple of hours tonight looking things up but they still don't make much sense. Does anyone here understand them and how they are suppopsed to interact?

The cards were-

The World with the 5 of cups over it, the 6 of coins underneath, the the Wheel to the left, the Queen of Wands above and the Page of wands to the right.

There's a column beside that with the 3 of Wands at the bottom, then the Emperor above that, then the 7 of Sword and the 2 of wands on the top.

Does this make sense to anyone?

i'd like to help but the way i read cards is very different from that unless i know what your friend was trying to read in each position of the cards i don't think i can help sorry

Yeah, it sounds like she was doing the Celtic Cross except if she was there should be a card crossing the one in the centre, four cards in the column and she should have said whether any of the cards were inverted or not.

The problem with Tarot is pretty much everyone reads the cards slightly differently. Like most things like that it's fairly intuative and although there are standard readings for the cards you'll find each person reads them slightly differently. I for one wouldn't ever do a reading for someone unless they had actually shuffled the cards themselves. I don't believe the cards can actually tell you anything on their own, but they are a very good medium for creating a link between the reader and the readee. They can't actually tell you the future but they can be very good for giving advise on things that are affecting your life and are likely to in the near future.

Erm... that doesn't really answer the question at all does it? If I knew what the position of each card meant in the reading then I might be able to interpret the cards a bit better since a lot of the meaning depends on the context but even then I'd not really want to intepret them to closely since I've not got the link to the cards. It all sounds like I'm being very New Age and wishy-washy here which is unlike me (I don't believe in most things like Tarot but I've found Tarot to be too spookily accurate to dismiss if you dont expect to tell specifics of the future) but like I say Tarot I think is a link between too people so it's very hadr to actually tell anything from them if you're not one of those two people.

Thank you KF2fan and Bevis.

I've always seen Tarot readings as something akin to seances - I'm not sure what my beliefs are and so have always been a wee bit wary. That said Pam totally freaked me out when she asked if my dad was a Aries (yup!) and me and my son were fire signs (yup, both Sag). She got me good with a few other points too. I've only worked beside Pam for 4 weeks now so how she came to the conclusions she did were beyond me, I don't talk about my home life too much at work.

It was a celtic cross thingy as you guessed Bevis, the World was crossed by the 4 of cups and from the drawing she made for me none were inverted (if that means upside down?).

Yeah, inverted is just when the cards are upside down. Some people don't bother with whether they're inverted or not but I do. It means there are twice as many meanings of course (and they're not all exactly opposite meanings just because a card is inverted just to make life even harder) but when I started taking into account inverted cards my readings did get more accurate.

My former girlfriend did a couple of tarot card readings on me, but I think her insights came mainly from her knowing me, not the cards themselves. The cards may have highlighted or helped her focus on certain areas, but I came away from the readings thinking it was akin to reading my horoscope in the newspaper: It could apply to anyone.

Harby, could Pam have found out your family birthsigns in some other way -- by asking other co-workers, perhaps?

see that is completely different from how i read the cards, years ago when i was a teen i took a class with my mom she really wanted me to get in to that stuff instead of comics...btw she's crazy,
but my teacher never bothered with the upside down because he said it how the cards look in context with a reading along with other cards and the feeling you get from them is what you need to worry about all cards have ups and downs too them just because they come up upside down shouldn't effect the reading... see different schools of thoughts right there

That's certainly true. When I watch other people give readings and the meanings they apply to cards they're often completely dofferent from the way that i read them. I think Tarot works though when you don't apply hard and fast rules to them and just let your intuition take over. I could have teh exact same layout of cards for two different people and end up reading them slightly differently. It's based on the context and teh question and the link between the two people involved.

In a way it's easier to do a reading for someone you don't know because then you are likely to add less meaning to cards based on what you already know about someone. I'm kind of wary of the fact that even if you're not doing it deliberately it's very easy to do cold reading when you're doing Tarot (or anything like that). Guessing that people are fire signs is easy since you have a one in four chance of getting it right and it's easy to tailor a Tarot reading based on how someone is reacting so the more you know someone the more you're going to read things into the cards that you already know to be true.
