I liked all the Star Treks (Enterprise was great, but at least Scott Bakula made a hot Starfleet Captain)
The Irwin Allen shows...Lost In Space, Land of the Giants, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Time Tunnel...
The old Battlestar Galactica (where you knew Starbuck was better as a man than as a..)

well besides all the regular ones that will be named in this thread i'll add one of my faves although it only lasted one season and didn't get the props it deserved for being educational and entertaining is Voyagers which ran on NBC for one season way back in 1982:
Plot Summary for "Voyagers!" (1982) Phineas Bogg is a member of a group people called Voyagers. They help history along. Give it a push where it's needed. He is a regular human that was living as a pirate a few hundred years ago, when he was chosen to be a voyager. He travels by way of a gold pocket watch like device called an omni. When the light is flashing red, it means history is wrong. His job is to fix it. In the pilot episode, Bogg ends up in 1982 when his omni malfunctions. (He is only supposed to be able to go as far as 1970.) He ends up in the apartment where 12 year old Jeffery Jones and his aunt and uncle live. (Jones parents were recently killed in an accident.) While there, Jeffery's dog grabs hold of Bogg's guide book (basically a history book.) Bogg being a pretty inept history person has no clue what to do without his book. One thing leads to another and Jeffery falls out of the building's window. The only way to save him is for Bogg to jump out after him and travel through time. Now Bogg is stuck in time with a 12 year old kid (Jeffery), no guide book, and no way of getting Jeffery back. But he does have an ace in the hole. Jeffery's dad was a history professor and Jeffery picked up much of his knowledge. So now the two of them, travel through time, giving history a push along where it is needed.

Phineas was such a hunk - why Jon-Erik Hexum (the actor who played him) was stupid enough to fool around with a loaded gun is beyond me...

I missed that one. But i liked the sound of it until we got to the kid! Why is it that Sci Fi has to have the "cute" kid in it????
If Phineas really was a pirate he would have let the snotty go splat then pick his book up and continue to do his job.
As for me My fav's growing up were Doctor Who Blakes 7 Star Trek Saphire and Steel The Tomorrow People.
I also liked Tripods and (later) Sliders

Mmmm... I absolutely loved Star Trek as a kid (my Dad and I watched it all the time). TNG is and always will be my favorite but DS9 really grew on me, I enjoyed Voyager an the Original Series is pretty tight too!!
I also really enjoyed Quantum Leap. And Babylon 5 -- my Mum loved that show!!
Firefly is probably my all-time favorite, though. I'm sooo sad it got cancelled so fast, it rocked hardcore.
That's about all the sci fi TV shows I ever really watched, though. My friend is trying to get me into a bunch of other ones. So we'll see what comes of that... ^_^
Posted by Blockade Boy on :
DS9 was more my style. This ST was unique in that the universe came to "us" instead of us going to them and that appeals to me as being different than most approaches, more Twilight Zonish (which hasn't yet been mentioned BTW). The intrigue, factions against factions, was a bit more convoluted in DS9 than the other series I felt. There were fewer white hats and black hats but lots of gray area.
Firefly is something I ddin't get into the time I watched one on tv. Fortunately some friends nagged me into watching the DVD's and I love this series. All interesting characters and noone is wasted. Dialogue of course is Whedon superb.

In no particular order:
The Tomorrow People Star Trek Next Generation Deep Space Nine Enterprise Quantum Leap Voyagers! The Powers of Matthew Star Lost in Space Buck Rogers
You'll note that most of these have some hunky guy in them. Purely a coincidence, I'm sure!
Speaking of The Tomorrow People, I've always thought that it was a little like the Legion in some ways. You could draw an analog with the "Big Three" in both: John/Cosmic Boy, Elizabeth/Saturn Girl and Stephen/Lightning Lad. There's also the Galactic Federation/UP parallell.
Posted by legionadventureman on :
Wasn't there a blonde in it as well who only lasted one season, then she and someone else were sent off to a galactic federation outpost?
Posted by Rockhopper Lad on :
That was Carol. She and Kenny left at the end of series one. Liz came aboard with series two, but she was much more interesting.
Posted by legionadventureman on :
Thanks John!
I had to go over to the TV Tome website just to find out who the blonde was...that's a really excellent place to go if you want to know about trivial stuff like song lyrics or cast members or how long a particular show lasted...

All Star Trek, except Voyager and most of Enterprise, especially DS9, a series I mourn the end of nearly weekly
Battlestar Galactica, new series
Firefly
I liked about half of Babylon 5
How could DS9 not be in the top 10, much less not on the list?

Okay, line up your tomatoes - Voyageur was my favorite of the Star Trek series and Janeway was my favorite captain. And Seven of Nine was pure inspiration.

I'll let you get away with that as long as you bow to Sisko.
Actually I don't outright hate Voyager but I never got the chance to get into it at the beginning. SLC had a time where, for about two years, most of the cable providers didn't carry a local (or any) UPN station because Larry Miller, the owner of the UPN station at the time, the Utah Jazz and a million businesses, decided that the network was too 'urban' and refused to show their content in Utah.
Not only did he effectively cut our market off for UPN shows, he did this the same time that Buffy switched over to UPN! Robbed us of two years of prime time slayerness! The bastich!
Posted by RTVU2 on :
I find the list iffy. DS9 was far superior to Voyager and should have made the list. And Buffy is way better then half the shows that came ahead of it. Stargate Atlantis is better then the Slayer? No way. The new BSG is good but would only make my top ten, not number 2. ST:NG, Quantum Leap and Doctor Who would make my top 5.
And where was Blake's Seven? That was a great British Sci-fi. And where was Angel? Where was the NBC show Erie, Indiana? Where was Amazing Stories?
There were alot of c*ap shows on the list.

It goes like this. I was maybe 10 years old, and had watched part one of a 2-parter the week before. When I found out we had to go out to dinner and that I would miss part 2, I cried. And cried. And cried. I didn't throw a fit, I was just very upset. My parents actually changed their plans so I could be home long enough to watch part 2. Pretty decent of them...

Well, Mystery Lad, the topic wasn't a "vote-only" for your favourite Sci-Fi show of all time, just for people to write in and share their opinions and share their own little threads of nostalgia.
"Farscape" was a show, that in spite of having Australian guest stars in some episodes, didnt quite catch on with the Aussies as it did with the USA contingent - which was a shame, really.

I agree with Mystery Lad - Farscape should have been on the list. Honestly, I think it should have made the top 20 at least. Also, Buffy is sci-fi? When did this happen? *sigh*

Here's my best of SciFi/Fantasy TV list:
Love Stargate Atlantis, not so much the SG:1 though. Quantum Leap had some really great episodes (The Leap Home and to Vietnam really stood out for me.) Firefly was thoroughly entertaining. Really dug Angel... not so much Buffy though. The Dresden Files were pretty decent. Liked Witchblade too. Star Trek: TNG and Voyager were my faves of the franchise (can't stand DS 9 though, other than the episode where they went back to the Tribble episode in TOS they bored me). Enterprise and TOS are watchable but usually don't keep my interest for the whole episode.
Of all these though I'd recommend SG Atlantis slightly more than Firefly. They are by far and away the class of my list.
Posted by rickshaw1 on :
Firefly The Six Million Dollar Man (cant believe this one hasn't been mentioned) Eureka (Still going, but its a great show) Wild Wild West Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Ultraman
And, this may get me kicked out of here, but...
I never really liked Star Trek. It was nice, but it didn't rock my world. To this day the whole star trek thing is beyond me. Where i grew up, we only had two channels locally and didn't even know what cable was. Instead of Star Trek, i liked Wild Wild West, or the adam west Batman. The old Green Hornet was fun.
I didn't get to see the old shows like Lost in Space or the Land of Giants...

It's astonishing to me, but I've watched (as a child or adult) all or part of, almost all of the series mentioned! Plus quite a few more! I've loved so many of them!
But as a kid, Star Trek and Lost in Space were most loved.
Later, Bionic Woman and Wonder Woman were the ones I liked the most during that era.
As an adult with kids, I enjoyed STNG and DS9.
I loved most of Farscape, too.
I discovered SG1 (love those characters!) late and followed Atlantis most of the time.
The new Doctor Who is lovely and so is Primeval.
There's a cartoon from Japan called The Avatar which I think, has become my all time favorite cartoon sci-fi series. Wonderful illustration, story, voices and concept.
My all time favorite is probably MST 3000. I used to laugh so hard! The movies were so bad but Joel and the robots were so funny! Loved that show.
There was a show that wasn't really a favorite but sort of a guilty fascination. I can't remember the name but the show was built around a giant living ship that looked like a Dragonfly. The ship and it's passengers were thrown out of their universe and into another. It was very strange, perhaps British or Aussie.
I like shows, and books, with 'living' ships. This one was sort of creepy, though. But very interesting. Anyone else remember it?

Lexx was my all time favorite Sci-Fi series (Thank you Canada). Xenia Seeberg was just amazing to look at, and Prince was probably the best Sci-Fi villain ever.

Stuff I liked;
Everything. Really. Even Misfits of Science and Automan and Manimal and Kindred: the Embraced and Wolf Lake (none of which are any more sci-fi than Buffy, but if Buffy counts, so do they!).
But favorites?
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was my favorite (Terry Farrell as Jazdia Dax was SOOOO hot), although I liked the other series as well (Kes was way cooler than Seven of Boobs).
Babylon 5, particularly those action packed third and fourth seasons.
Earth: Final Conflict. The first season only was amazing, and I would have liked to see it continue in that direction. Later seasons kind of blew.
Andromeda. Yet another from the House of Roddenberry that was amazingly cool in the first season, and then got a little wonky.
Tek War. Written by Shatner and acted by the dude from BJ and the Bear (the one who played the trucker, not the chimp) and yet, still surprisingly cool. Best cyberspace / hacking scenes ever.
Honorable mentions to Dark Angel, Space: Above and Beyond, etc.
I have some nostalgia for shows like V and War of the Worlds and Alien Nation, as well, but I suspect that I wouldn't like them on a reviewing.

Very true. The new guy annoyed me, and I spent more time watching to see what sort of snippy catfights Da'an and Zo'or would get into... Their various schemes and machinations against each other were classic.

I think of the professional stuff, and all of the overacted melodrama involve with the genre, as Italian Slapstick. The only legitamet show that I've ever seen that was billed as such, was a production of 'The Taming of the Shrew' by William Shakespeare, on PBS.
So that's where I'd put Wrestlemania and family, on PBS.

I agree, but I don't think it was just a Roddenberry creation.
Farscape, Lexx and Babylon 5 sort of went that way too, along with many others.
Primeval got kink of wonky at the end of the first season, I think.

Movies: The Matrix trilogy, The Star Wars movies, Bladerunner.

After watching the entire release of the new Battlestar Galactica, I'm not really getting the greatest show ever support? Makes me wonder if I missed a major point.

Babylon 5 was awesome in the 3rd and 4th seasons. The 5th kind of fell apart, which, since JMS felt compelled to wrap everything up in season 4, believing that there wouldn't *be* a season 5, makes some sense.
Posted by Uranus Lad on :
My absolute favorites would have to be Farscape, Firefly, Lost, Twilight Zone and the Outer Limits. I've been really liking Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles, unfortunately, like Firefly the geniuses at Fox have canceled it.
I agree with Set some of Babylon 5 was really good some of it sucked, The more recent Dr. Whos are pretty good, I thought Lexx was enjoyable but I always felt like I was missing something major, Alien Nation was pretty cool, when I was a kid I loved the original Battlestar Galactica and though I've tried to get into the new one I find it overly "dramatic" and somewhat pointless", I REALLY don't get what people see in it.
I have a slight soft spot for Star Trek (LOVE the new movie) but always thought that a universe filled mostly with humans with funny noses/foreheads/ears who all just happen to speak English pretty lame and cheap. Of all of them, I thought Enterprise had the most potential but I hardly ever caught it when it was on.

I like Primeval, but to say wonky at the end of the first season is pre mature, i watched the first season which if i am not wrong was like 6 episodes, barely a start to a show. I am now into the 3rd season, and thats WONKY, MAJOR CHANGES. and i just watched a movie RED MIST which had Conner in it.

Just got done watching my tapes of TERRAHAWKS again. I've seen these more than any other Gerry Anderson show. The characters are so much better-written, and it's just plain funny so much of the time. Terrific show.
Am now wacthing my way thru SPACE PRECINCT. Without a doubt, this was the BEST-written Gerry Anderson series EVER. All the regular characters were likeable, I loved the concept (cops on another planet), the designs, the effects work (done the "old-fashioned" way with miniatures), the directing, the acting, the music... quite often it even had more interesting sci-fi ideas than anything I'd seen on other shows. Simply, this blows away ALL the late-model STAR TREK spin-off combined. (That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!)

I love this show. Next to Firefly, its probably my favorite. In some ways, it absolutely is. It has passed Firefly in shows, the characters have a good humor/seriousness ratio, and the stuff that makes it interesting is not so far out there.
Firefly was a great western in space, kinda like the original Star Trek was supposed to be. But it never really did what Trek did, which was use its imagination to lead tech to the future. I know the show wasn't put into place for that, but it was very prescient (sp?). Firefly was definately low tech.
