McDonald's?
KFC?
Burger King?
Taco Bell?
Krispy Creme?
Subway?

Sound out y'all!!

Wendy's Southwest Chicken Caesar Salad.

either Taco Bell's Chicken Quesadilla or
Subway's Cold Cut Trios filled with onions, tomatoes, and yellow banana peppers on one-foot Parmesan and Oregano bread.

Breakfast at Jack in the Box. Twenty-four hours a day. Nothing like an Extreme Sausage Sandwich at 9:00 pm.

I like Wendy's salads too. But I'd have to say my fav fast food recently has been Sonic's Jumbo Popcorn Chicken. And I know I shouldn't have it but I can't resist the chipolte with Tabasco they've added as a dipping sauce.

OMG!

The only fast food I can tolerate on a semi-regular basis is TACO BELL and SUBWAY! *yumm!*

But when my tolerance is low, I've been known to "dine" at McDonalds (spicy chicken sandwhich), Burger King (Whopper-- *need* I say more?), Arby's (Beef & Cheddar-- cheddar RULES!), Wendy's (bitchen dollar menu) and Captain D's (fast-food seafood is SO kewl!).

And let us NOT forget Krystal's*.

*White Castle to you hippie yankies.

McDonald's all the way: Quater Pounder with Cheese and a Super-Size fries.

Though my husband has been steering me to Subway lately because it's healthier and all that crap. [Smile] I do like their Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sub.

Krispy Kreme is the ultimate donut shop. I love their hot glazed right out from the machine, but I really love their blueberry donuts. Mmmm, blueberry donuts. Luckily for my waistline, the nearest KK is more than half an hour away.

KFC (original and extra crispy) rarely disappoint.

I like the McD's dollar menu but

I like Burger King's flame broiled burgers more

Quizno's toasted sandwiches -- yum!

Posted by matlock on :

Mickey D's - Double quarter pounder w/cheese value meal, ketchup only. Mmmmmm... burger.

I also like Chik-Fil-A, but I still feel "wrong" if I don't get it at a mall. For those of you who didn't grow up in the south, there were absolutely no free-standing CFA's until the very late 80's, so a Chik-Fil-A used to be a treat for a trip to the mall.

Krystal Chili Cheese Pup's are also good, although they can't compete to the chili dogs at the world famous Varsity here in Atlanta. By God, that's good stuff. I went to a party catered by the Varsity earlier this year - it's the closest I ever came to eating myself sick. In a good way!

I love Krystal's

The only things I'll eat at Maccas (OZ translation of Mickey D's) are the hashbrowns and hotcakes. Mmmmm... Breakfast menu.

Other than that it's KFC Original (Do you have Crispy Strips in US/UK?), Red Rooster (OZ BBQ Chicken franchise) or the Bacon Deluxe burger at Hungry Jacks (which goes by the name Burger King in the US).

Sheesh - there's quite a few different versions of names here in OZ! We just like to feel special, I suppose.

I'm a Taco Bell and KFC man. For breakfast, however, I simply cannot resist those McDonald's McGriddles.

Lash, I almost *forgot* about fast seafood. I used to love Cap'n D's...

Well y'know, it's the little differences...

I feel more worldly already. Just another reason to be grateful for this forum and how it's united us from all over the world ("we are the world... we are the children...")

We love Chik-Fil-A nuggets and waffle fries. And up until a couple of months ago the only place to get them was in a mall. But we finally had a free-standing restaurant open up, even serving breakfast. But they are not open on Sundays. Typical for Utah.

Actually, the "closed on Sunday" rule comes straight from CFA founder S. Truett Cathay, a real Southern Baptist type. No CFA is open on Sunday, which is kind of a bummer. Love those waffle fries though.

I feel I should mention that the lowly Hardee's chain does have some pretty good biscuits in the morning.

I never have thought of doughnut shops as fast food, but Krispy Kreme (Hot Doughnuts Now!) are the best damn thing ever. I sort of regret that they went national, it was a great secret down here while it lasted.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Miss Hardees. They all pulled out of Utah a few years ago. They had the best San Francisco Sourdough hamburger. And their peach cobbler dessert. YUM!

Posted by Star Boy on :

Okay... Help a confused Aussie understand what it is you're actually eating!?!

What the hell are Chik-Fil-A's, McGriddles, Waffle Fries and Peach Cobbler? It's like you're ordering from the Bizarro World Menu or something... [Wink] I mean, a Peach Cobbler sounds like someone fitting shoes to fruit or something, and Waffle Fries...??? Whassupwithat??? [Confused] [Confused]

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Well, these are waffle fries:

 -

And Chik-Fil-A is sort of like KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) in that they specialize in chicken dishes. What we find is 1000 times better about CFA over KFC is that Chik does not use MSG in any of its menu. Caroline and her whole family are deathly allergic to MSG so we have to watch what kind of fast foods and even store bought items we eat.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

And this is the best way I know of to describe Peach Cobbler:

3 pounds peaches, stoned, sliced and skinless
1 1/3 ounces common flour (5 Tablespoons)
4 ounces granulated sugar (1/2 cup)
9 ounces cake flour (2 cups sifted)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 ounces melted butter, unsalted (3 Tablespoons)
1 egg
Use a pan about 9"x13" and 2-3' deep for a home batch. The fruit should half fill it.

After mixing the first flour and sugar together, toss it to coat the peaches.

Mix the streusel-like cake topping: put the dry ingredients into the mixing bowl with the paddle and start it at a low speed. Stream in the butter first, then the egg. It should have a large crumbly texture.

Distribute the topping evenly, making an effort to cover the fruit.

Sprinkle the whole with cinnamon sugar or streusel and bake at 325 F. for about two hours. Poke into the center of the topping to make sure it is almost done. It will finish off as it cools to room temperature.

Wow.

Peach Cobbler sounds like Apple Crumble - dunno if that's found outside of OZ - pretty much sub semi-stewed apples for peaches and I think you've got it.

But those waffle fries... Are they really made of waffle mixture? Terrifyingly, fatteningly interesting.

PS - Scott, it's the same here in OZ. V. hard to find a place that isn't liberally coating their entire range in MSG. And add in the fact that we're right on the doorway to SE Asia and China and you'll understand what we've gotta put up with.

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

Waffle fries are just regular french fries with a waffle cut. But yours sound like they'd be interesting.

And I understand where you're coming from Wayne. Its hard enough trying to find a decent place to eat that doesn't coat their menu in the stuff without being right outside their doorway. I guess Caroline would have to stick with vegamite if we ever went Down Under.

I'm a big fan of Sonic Drive-In (Fritos chili pie, strawberry limeade, chicken fried steak sandwich on Texas toast), In-n-Out Burger (Double Doubles and their freshly-cut fries), Chik-Fil-A, Rally's/Checkers, Krystal's/White Castle, and Krispy Kreme.

When I'm in Texas, I also like to drop by Whataburger (whataname!).

When I was younger, I was hugely addicted to McDonald's fries and McChicken sandwiches...

Posted by Stu on :

And when I'm in Canada, I never miss having poutine. Even the poutine at Harvey's isn't too bad.

Posted by Varalent on :

Subs: By far my favorite is Blimpie's Tuna (I'm a big fan of tuna salad) but their Cubans come in a close second. Quizno's subs are also great! Subway's/Fazoli's will do as a substitute (respectively) if neither of the others are readily available

Burgers: Wendy's Classic Double w/Cheese ketchup only comes in first with McD Quarter Pounder w/cheese in second place (McD's fries are the best however) (PS: White Castle was/is WAY better than Krystal's, IMO)

Chicken: We've just started getting stand alone Chik-Fil-A around here in the last 6 mo-1yr and I haven't tried them out yet so I guess KFC Original for me.

Breakfast: McD's Sausage Bisquits or Egg McMuffins

Others:Arby's Roast Beef & Cheedar, Krispy Kreme

Okay, now I'm hungry. What's for lunch?

V

Subway foot long BMT with the works (except olives).

Chipotle Chicken Fajita Burrito with the hot salsa plus a bottle of Tabasco Chipotle sauce at hand.

Krispy Kreme Donuts (which I really shouldn't have anymore, but hey...)

Love Chipotle's carnitas burritos with corn salsa and guacamole.

Just had a Chick-Fil-A sandwich, waffle fries, and sweet tea today, as a matter of fact. Very tasty. The flavoring of their chicken sandwiches does remind me of KFC original recipe, which (IMO) is a good thing.

Not for the people at KFC I imagine -- does this mean there's a leak? Has someone stolen the Colonel's original recipe of 11 herbs and spices?!?

Btw, I saw this thing on the food network that explained the development of the McGriddle and that the toughest part was infusing the griddle cakes with just the right amount of syrup so that it wasn't soggy etc... interesting stuff and it actually made me want to try one! (I'm not sure I'd want to see how a McNugget is made though)

Last Friday I had my first McGriddle-- I loved it SO much I had 2 on Sunday!!!!

Posted by Lightning Lad on :

I'll tell you one ingredient that Chick-Fil-A doesn't use that KFC does. MSG. Monosodium Glutamate. Pure poison. Caroline's whole family, like a growing number of people, are extremely allergic to it. The active ingredient, aspartme, should be banned for use in any foodstuffs. But it is also used in sugar-free items like soda so I doubt that will ever happen.

[edit note]

Sorry, just noticed I had already talked about MSG and KFC earlier in the thread. Don't want to sound like I'm preaching.

Definitely KFC, that's where most of us students hang out. McDonald's (McDo, as we call it) comes in a close second, though.

I think McGriddles are McTasty! They're not for everyone, though. I had my first one in the company of two friends who were also trying it for the first time. Neither of them liked theirs -- in fact, one of them said that he found it "disgusting." At that point, I promptly said, "Good, more for me!" and finished off his as well. [Big Grin]

Since that time, I've had McGriddles every time I've passed by a McDonald's during breakfast hours...

Hey, IB -- do you like Jollibee?

There are a couple of them here in the States, and I love their food, especially their Palabok Fiesta, spaghetti, and peach mango pies!

They also have a cute mascot: -

Have to say that a real old fashioned portion of Fish and Chips from the local corner "chippy" is still a fav of mine. Getting harder to find a good chippy now they have moved over to frying in veg oils and stuff. The batter never quite tastes the same.

And, (time for a guilty pleasure) after a good few beers then a donna kebab with chilli sauce is a must

{[...] MSG. Monosodium Glutamate. Pure poison. Caroline's whole family, like a growing number of people, are extremely allergic to it. }

MSG allergies are far from uncommon, but I'm curious about what told you that they're "growing." That would suggest it's environmentally induced, rather than (primarily) genetic. In any event, I've thrived on this "poison" for years.

{ The active ingredient, aspart[a]me, should be banned for use in any foodstuffs. But it is also used in sugar-free items like soda so I doubt that will ever happen. }

Sorry, but this is not correct. Aspartame has nothing to do with MSG, which is centuries old. Aspartame is a sweetener created from two amino acids -- not glutamic acid -- only about thirty years ago. It only has a sweetening effect on the human palate -- it's otherwise non-nutritious and biochemically inert. Some Websites have sprung up blaming aspartame for many ills ranging from blindness to death, but the science I've seen brought to bear to "support" this has ranged from shoddy to non-existent.

Does Caroline and her family have a bad reaction to aspartame in soft drinks? She could have inherited a minor or partial case of phenylketonuria, where one of the two amino acids in aspartame can't be fully broken down by the body.

The McGriddle-- disgusting? NO WAY, man!

It's by far the best breakfast thingie I've ever tried.

Tell your friend to lay off the dope for a while, IT'S WARPED HIS MIND!

I'm so glad McDonald's introduced McGriddles because it makes the breakfast choice so much easier. Before the McGriddle, I had to decide from among breakfast sandwiches served on English muffins, biscuits, or bagels.

Now the decision is easy... it's sweet, sweet griddle cake for me all the way!

Another weakness of mine is anything from Dairy Queen. I just had a DQ hot dog and spicy bacon cheeseburger (with Tabasco sauce mayo, I think) tonight, finished with a brownie Blizzard.

I've got to give props to Sonic for their Chili Cheese Wrap. Real artery-clogging goodness there.

Props to the Buffalo Chicken Burrito at California Tortilla as well.

I love Chick-Fil-A's chicken club sandwich. Actually, what I really love about it is the smoked honey barbecue sauce -- like the name implies, it's just the right combination of sweet honey and smokey barbecue flavor.

Plus, they've got some of the best sweet tea you can find at a fast food place -- both very sweet and very tea-flavored.

I've recently become fond of the Quiznos Mesquite Chicken with Bacon sandwich. The chili sauce you can get on the side is rather tasty as well.

I usually get a salad instead of chips so I can convince myself I'm somehow eating healthier. As an onus, Quiznos is the only sandwich joint I know that serves Diet Mountain Dew.

I like that horseradish dressing they have at Quizno's. I usually throw that on whatever sandwich I get there.

Lately I'm into those new chicken sandwiches at McDonald's -- they're pretty good.

I love Wendy's double cheeseburgers with ketchup
and mustard only.

Penn Station's Sausage Sub rocks, and they make
a killer Reuben.

"I also like Chik-Fil-A, but I still feel "wrong" if I don't get it at a mall."

The Cherry Hill Chick Fil-A moved across the street from the Cherry Hill Mall, apparently because the Mall management had a "problem" with their policy of being CLOSED on Sundays. These days I go to the Chick Fil-A more than the Mall-- so who's losing there?

I love the "club" sandwich (the one with "everything"), AND the "waffle fries". But my main thing is the "chargrilled garden salad" (one of the few "healthy" meals I eat). AND, I love the "chicken salad sandwich", which I get toasted (but NOT CUT!!), pop it in the frig and eat the next day-- or later. Cherry Hill had a "buy 1 get 1 free" offer for YEARS... not anymore. Oh well!

So on at least one occasion lately, I went in there and got 3 separate meals in one trip! The "hot" mean for now, the other two for later.

Let's see...

McDONALD's -- Filet-O-Fish sandwich

BURGER KING -- Bacon Double Cheeseburger; French Chicken Sandwich (DISCONTINUED after 10 years-- dammit!!!)

KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN -- Chicken (original recipe / the taste of that stuff can KNOCK your taste buds for a loop, can't it???); Fries (I LOVE the new "fat" fries-- like "steak fries" at the supermarket); mashed potatoes; macaroni & cheese; chocolate parfait desert; "Tender Roast" sandwich (DISCONTINUED, DAMMIT!!!!!)

TACO BELL -- Mexican Pizza (but be careful WHERE you go-- TB's standards vary drastically depending on area, and one TB can make terrific food while another can REGULARLY make AWFUL crap)

AMERICAN FOOD -- quarter-pound HOT DOG!!! (I usually get 2 of 'em-- at the Deptford Mall food court)

I could go on about PIZZA HUT-- where I've enjoyed a wide variety of things over the years-- but, tragically, the quality of their stuff PLUMMETTED dramatically-- in fact, progressively-- for 12 CONSECUTIVE years-- until I finally could stand it no longer. They are an example of all that's wrong with "corporate"-owned "chain" stores in America (and the world). I haven't been to one in years now.

Oh, but currently, my #1 favorite fast food-- pepperoni pizza! But this I get from a local, family-owned place, SORRENTO'S. A friend I used to work with who lives in the "Mafia" neighborhood of South Philly told me about it (it's over here in Jersey, near where we used to work), and I've been going there for around 20 years now!

Earlier this year I went through this period where I was addicted to McDonald's double cheeseburgers, dipped in ketchup.

Been on the wagon for 'bout a month now, but I'm about ready to fall off of it.
