I only got in on the last half hour, but MAN! was I impressed. Let's just say there are a lot of surprises, even in that last half hour.

Yeah, the casting is pure genius. I guess she is supposed to be on several episodes. The fun thing about Pam Grier is the way she turns up in the most unexpected places. Then she disappears. You forget about her, don't think of her for several years, and then- BAM - there she is on screen again. This is just such a great fit for character and actor.
The JSA story was fun. I loved, visually, the way Dr. Fate came across on the small screen. His sacrifice for John was a nice touch. The story was just a very nice melding of Golden Age, Silver Age, and Modern Age.

It has been a while since I've seen Smallville. Didn't they once say that there wouldn't be any costumes on the show?
I wasn't overlly impressed with the episode. I didn't like Click Here For A Spoiler the bloodbath of JSA guys and I find it a little hard to believe that no one had heard of the JSA before.
There were some nice touches I liked Click Here For A Spoiler Ma Hunkle and the Green Lantern ring and lantern. Though I find it hard to believe that Alan Scott would give up the lantern even if he was no longer using it.

I was thrilled to watch this, and I kind of liked the Watchmenification of the JSA -- it basically worked. It was a more modern take on Levitz's McCarthy story. The casting seemed brilliant. I don't know who the actor was who played Syl Pemberton, but his look was pure gold -- a mix of Jan Michael Vincent and half a dozen other wasted 1970s action stars. Perfect!
But...having Click Here For A SpoilerDr. Fate impaled on an ice lance and my 7-year old bursting into tears -- I think I could have done without that. It's so tempting to kill the JSA characters -- they aren't the stars of the show, they're old anyway, it's a noble sacrifice, etc. It was hard to deal with, for me and the 7-year old.
And really. Smallville is just...not that good. It just has NO subtlety whatsoever. The acting is wooden, one-dimensional. The editing and scripting had huge clunks and jumps in it that messed up the pacing. It just hasn't grown at all, as a show. ICarly has more subtlety than Smallville. And I can never get past the portrayal of Clark, although at least there were glimmers here that he can become the inspiration he is supposed to be.

I agree with Quis..the prop work was really subpar. The cosmic rod, Fate's helmet, the Green Lantern, all looked like plastic. I realize they may have to be plastic, but could you maybe make them look metallic?

I also saw just the second half of the show -- it was the first time I'd seen Smallville in years.
It was cool to see members of the JSA on the small screen, but jarring to see costumed heroes in the Smallville "universe." I guess the show's been heading in that direction for years, what with Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter, but for someone who hadn't really watched since it was just Clark moving around really fast in his "regular" clothes, it felt odd and looked a bit cheesy. Costumes and props, unless they're done really well, just tend to take me out of any suspension of disbelief I'd ordinarily have.
The woman playing Stargirl was kind of cute, but not a very good actress.
And, although I thought the actor cast as Hawkman was a pretty good fit, his exaggerated, growly enunciation -- much like that of Christian Bale in the most recent Batman movies -- cracked me up a little bit. Also, Hawkman's vest-type costume looked weird, but I'm guessing that was because the actor didn't quite have the physique to pull off a shirtless Hawkman.
