I thought it'd be fun to let each other know what we picked up...whether new or from the Back Issue Bin.
I picked up the dollar reprints of Chew #1 and The Walking Dead #1. I have both on trade format, but thought it's be great to have regular issue copies of both on hand.
I also picke up the Flash Secret Files and Origins 2010. Barry Allen is my favorite character in comics, so I am supporting this 100%. Plus there is art by Kollins.
The Last Stand of New Krypton #2 is next. Buying it for the LEgion, and so far...majorly bummed by this whole thing.
Finally is Doom Patrol #9. The bug is back and someone is in trouble....hey la hey la the Bug is back. If Ambush Bug is in it...I'm buying it.
Posted by stuorstew on :
Ambush Bug is in Doom Patrol? Must make a note to pick that up, thanks.
I picked up a couple of books from the Amazon Marketplace this week.
The first is a Manga called Solanin by Asano Inio about a twenty something living in Tokyo who is looking for purpose in her life. It is quite a hefty book at 400+ pages but the story is broken down into smaller almost self contained stories so it is not quite so daunting. About halfway through and so far it has been excellent.
The other was an IDW book called Completely Doomed which is a collection of adaptations of Robert Bloch stories by various Indie creators. I have not started it yet but at least one of the stories is by Ted McKeever who is one of my favourite artists so is, at least in part, going to be great.
I also picked up Last Stand of New Krypton for the same reason as you. I seem to be enjoying it more than you but will be glad when they are back where they belong in a couple of months.

Lastest and what will likely be my last Buffy. It's strapped on rocket-skis and is jumping space-sharks at this point.
Mighty Avengers 35. I like USAgent and Hank Pym, but this team sorely needs a stronger female presence than Stature and Jocasta provide. (The foreshadowed return of Janet van Dyne may fill that void, 'though.) Hope springs eternal!
Adventure 9, which was all kinds of meh. "Quick, shoot darkness at it Shadow Lass, that will help power the time machine!" Plus, as much as I love that they are using Tellus, why do they keep handing him off to artists who've not bothered to look at the character before drawing him as a humanoid with a tail? Still waiting for this stuff to end and actual Legion stories to begin, instead of World of Krypton / Blackest Night / ressurection of Bart and Conner / etc. crossover stuff.

I bought nine this week:
Boys 41 Flash Secret Files Invincible Returns 1 Doom Patrol 9 Last Stand of New Krypton 2 Buffy 34 Warlord 13 Superman Secret Origin 5 Batman & Robin 11
Don't look for reviews any time soon as I'm now over a month behind. As for Buffy, Set, I'm feelin' ya, but with it ending around 40, I feel obliged to stick with it.
Almost bought Marvel's SHIELD #1. Thumbed thru it and the art and story looked awesome. After reading a 5-star review of it on CBR, I emailed my comic book guy and told him to save me a copy, and I'll buy it next week.
I was also tempted by both the Kevin Smith and Matt Wagner number ones of their Green Hornet series based on Cobalt's reviews. I decided not to get either at this time because of the price point and my lack of familiarity with the character. I might change my mind at some point, though, or I might buy the trades when they come out. Of the two, the Kevin Smith version looked more tempting because of the art.

hmmm. not a great week.
ultimate x 1, and 2. quite liked it.
uncanny x-men second coming number 2. liked it just wish it were a lot longer. and was hoping more than just kurt would be so against the x-force's killing spree. even wolvie seems out of character.
new avengers luke cage 1 of 3. crazy art. (not crazy good) i was duped, thought this was new avengers...didn't catch the luke cage subtitle. was ok but not getting 2 or 3 unless im hungry for comics.
and buffy 34. not feelin the plot but, the dialogue is so good, it makes me laugh, brad meltzer obviously watched alot of buffy.

So far, still have to visit my other store...
Brightest Day #0 - intrigued by the preview.
Doc Savage #1 - Gonna give it a try.
The Flash #1 - c'mon...
Adventure Comics #10 - I have a feeling I'm going to be dissappointed until LSH #1 hits.
Posted by rickshaw1 on :
Superman Secret Origins 5- okay story, great art. I did jettison the Luther-gives-Lois'-mom-medicine-once-a-day storyline for the "Her dads an ass" storyline.
Funny thing, I don't ever recall having seen Lois's mom in any stories. Not to say that she was never shown, I just don't remember if i ever saw it.
JSA All-Stars 5- really needs some work on the art, the story is okay. I have a feeling that what Courtney sees and the reader wasn't shown was the real Al.
The Flash 1- story isn't grabbing me so far, art is not very good for the character.
Doom Patrol 9- Gotta say, Keith is hitting a grove with this, though the "language" of explanation is getting annoying fast. Still, its part of the "badguy's" character.
Batman and Robin 11: eh... Good art, but the story isn't setting my world on fire.
Brightest Day 0- Not bad. Pete Tomasi is simply put DC's most underrated writer. Every book he touches becomes instantly better. Together, he and Geoff are weaving something great.
Red Robin 11- Getting better, but I hear Yost is leaving and another writer is coming aboard. I'll reserve judgement.
Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :
I dropped Green Arrow, but I read it.
I'm also not buying anymore of Rise of Arsenal, or the new Green Arrow book when it comes out. I'm not supporting that direction by giving DC my money.
That said, I picked up Batman, Batgirl, Brightest Day, Flash, Booster Gold, Secret Six, and I can't remember the rest.

SHE-HULK SENSATIONAL 1-Shot
THE FLASH 1 (mainly for the free Flash ring with purchase)
BRIGHTEST DAY 0
I put Adventure 10 back on the shelf.

Siege Young Avengers.
Brightest Day 0 good enough to keep me around despite blackest night zombie burnout.
skimmed Green Arrow at the store. haha
and new muties. i forget. (not alot of new muties)
and adventure 10 despite being more like "quislet, superman, and superboy", and not the legion story i was looking for.

Here's my haul from the comics released this week (Note: though I buy them every week, I'm typically about a month behind in actual reading--I'm slow!):
Brightest Day 0 Flash 1 Adventure 10 (bottom) Punisher Max 6 Booster Gold 31 Batgirl 9 Daredevil 506 Irredeemable Special 1 Chew 10 (top) Secret Six 20
I thought, for fun, I'd include the ones I'd read first (top) and last (bottom) from the stack. In my case those are the issues from the haul I want to read most and least to provide a little more depth beyond just posting the list. Chew is one of my very favorite books being put out at this time. Adventure? Well, I'm just buying that one for the Legion appearances until they actually take over top billing, like many of us, I'd suspect.
I also bought Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 from last week's releases after reading lots of positive reviews of it from trusted sources. My pull list may be taking a major change, though, with Marvel books being most effected. Watch for the return of the Roundtable today for my thoughts...

Oh I forgot I also got the latest NEW MUTANTS too.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Dev, definitely let me know how Doc Savage is in your First Wave thread.
And Lardy--please review the Shield! I'm going to pick it up too.
I normally only go every 4 weeks or so and then get a huge double stack of comics when I do. So I'm not sure it'd be worth me listing every single comic I collect (basically all the DC's, all the Marvels, all the Vertigo's, many independents, etc.).
One day I'll move back closer to my CBS and maybe go weekly or biweekly again. I feel like I just can't spare the time to go these days...
Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :
Savage is wonderful but I haven't read the Justice, Inc. back-up yet. If you want my opinion.

Also picked up...
Chew #10 - best book you're probably not reading.
Secret Six #20 - You guys addicted me to this book.
Oh yeah...also got an extra Flash Ring for Hannah (need to get her a White Lantern ring next week, She has all of them so far.)
Also got her the Stargirl/STRIPE mini mate set for $1. She's gonna love that.

Green Lantern #53 - Like all the colored Lanterns, so I'll give this a shot for a while.
Supergirl #52 - Have hope that we'll at least see Brainy through this issue.
Brave and the Bold #33 - love the line up in this one.
The Spirit #1 - Preview looked good, plus the backup is by Denny O'Niell and Bill Sienkiewicz, in Black and White no less. Hope it's in his Shadow days vein of art.
Blackest Night Directors cut - More Johns stuff with lots of character designs.

Green Lantern Corps #47 - Gonna be grabbing the BN issues at least, figured I'd start here though. I may pick up Guy's new book. Superman #699 - The end run is coming. Last Stand of New Krypton #3 - Just want this to be over, no interest in the War thing.
More when I get to my other store.

Okay...
Grabbed The Walking Dead #71 - Want to read this right this second, but also don't. Cause then the wait for the next issue starts.
FCBD Stash...
For me:
Dr. Solar/Magnus - Shooter getting a chance to do these guys again. Should be interesting.
War of The Supermen - It's free...doubt I'll get the mini though.
Bongo - Simpsons fun.
For Hannah:
DC Kids - lots of short story fun.
Shrek - She can't wait for the next movie.
Archie's Summer Splash - Fun with the Archie gang.
For Jon (or at least for him to destroy):
Toy Story - wild jabbering will ensue when he sees this. Should probably let his sister see it first.

Black Widow 2, loving it it's like a movie, and the art is sick! Adventure Comics 11: not sure why i got it haven't read it yet. Astonishing X-men: really liked it, art is super stylized but i find it surprising. and MAJOR SPOILER!!!!

I need to get to main CBS to pick up a few weeks worth of comics but since its far away I needed to scratch that itch and picked up a few random things that weren't on my pull list already to read over the weekend (and I'll review them):
- Astonishing Spider-Man / Wolverine - based on reviews from www.comicbookresources.com which gave it a rare 5 out of 5 stars, and since Jason Aaron and Adam Kubert are doing it. Sure, I don't need another Spidey/Wolvie comic, but I can always use a comic starring anyone if its that good.
- I, Zombie
- First Wave, based on SK and Dev's recommendation.
- Green Hornet Strikes - I gave the other two a chance and am sticking with them, I figure I might as well review the third title as well.

BIRDS of PREY 1
WARLORD 14
POWER GIRL 12
JL GENERATION LOST 2

BRAVE & BOLD 34
BOOSTER GOLD 32
All of the above were $2.99 books, as I am trying to keep my $3.99 purchases to a bare minimum, or better yet stop them alltogether.
but I *did* buy these $3.99 books:
DCU LEGACIES 1... first of all, Len Wein's recent stuff has been awesome, the artists are top-notch and I **love** DC's Golden Age heroes set in the Golden Age! Add in Stealth's not-easy-to-get praise, and I couldn't pass this up.
ADVENTURE 11... I passed on isseu 10 last month, but this, based on the cover, is heavy on the LSH. So I got it...

Brave and the Bold #34 - stunning artwork ... great one-liners ...
War of the Supermen #4 - again, loved the artwork ... felt like I was reading Cliff Notes though ... was this originally supposed to be a longer series?
Return of Bruce Wayne #2 - I never read Final Crisis ... was it as unnecessarily convoluted as this?
Wonder Woman #44 - made me wish I'd starting reading Gail Simone's run earlier ...

Just read the "Mighty Crusaders" special - waste of money and time. I hadn't picked up any of the other materials that had come before, but as a way to jump into the new Archie characters, it really falls short. The plot to get them together to form a team is horribly contrived and happens way too quickly. There are a few cameos from other DC characters just to remind us where we are, but it still doesn't feel like the DCU. After this special I don't think I can even pick one on the team that I like or find intriguing. In fact several of them are simply unlikable to me.
I'll have to pass on the series.

BRIGHTEST DAY 3
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA 39

I did purchase the following $3.99 titles:
MARVEL ZOMBIES 5 # 3 (series 5 will likely be my final MZ series purchase)
ADVENTURE 12/51whatever
JUSTICE LEAGUE of AMERICA 45 (not quite ready to let go of it yet)

Well, I finally put in a huge order today at Instock Trades based on various recommendations I've gotten from LWers and some trades I've wanted for myself. (Also the first time I used the website!)
Unfortunately there was no freebie trade I could get and Project Superpowers half-off didn't feel like much of a deal at $9.99 (so I eliminated it).
I got:
Scalped vol. 5 Scalped vol. 6 Ghost Rider: Hell Bent Heaven Bound (Jason Aaron run) Hellboy: Seeds of Destruction (vol. 1) Hellboy: Wake the Devil (vo. 2) SECRET HISTORY OMNIBUS HC W/ DUST JACKET - FC recommendation that kicked it all off Cairo TPB (Vertigo) COMPLETE DICK TRACY VOL 1 HC
All in all, a pretty big order that should keep me satisfied for a few months with my ongoings and plans to reread the entire Silver Age Iron Man run. I will be doing a lot of comic book reading! (Between changing diapers that is)
Posted by Officer Taylor on :
I also put in a TPB order a couple days ago, but not to In-Stock Trades, which I've also used (and highly recommend). After cross-checking eBay and IST for prices, I bought a batch from another trusted online source mycomicshop.com. I chose this site because the going prices on eBay and IST were usually more than what I saw for the particular items I wanted this go-round. I'm on their mailing list, so I got an additional 10% off most of these, and had the option of buying some that were VF condition for lower than Mint or Near Mint prices. Mostly, I don't care if they're VF because that's still really nice condition.
I ordered:
Batman Ego and Other Tales TPB NM $9.00 Fables TPB Vol 4 NM $10.80 Ghost Rider Trials and Tribulations TPB NM $7.20 Ghost Riders Heaven's on Fire TPB VF $8.64 Jonah Hex Face Full of Violence TPB NM $6.30 Spirit HC Vol 1 VF $12.00 Spirit HC Vol 2 NM $15.00
All are substantially below cover price and should scratch some itches I have! The Ghost Rider trades will complete the latter two of the four Aaron volumes (which Cobie has bought on my recommendation). Three Darwyn Cooke books, my long-awaited first colume of Jonah Hex and the next Fables trade (along with Cooke, my latest obsession!) round it out.

How good a deal, you ask? The cover pices on the Spirit HCs are $24.99 apiece! Jonah Hex: FFoV retails for $12.99. Batman: Ego TPB retails for $17.99. The Ghost Rider trades are $12.99 and $16.99 respectively. And Fables Vol. 4 retails for $17.95. I paid $68.94 total for what would've cost me $128.89 retail, plus, I dunno, at least 10 bucks tax? That's about a 50% savings, minimum! (Neither IST nor mcs charge shipping on orders of at least $50)
It pays to shop around, folks! (or even better have a well-stocked local library)

JSA #7- Hate that Damage is gone as a character. I may be one of the few people that bought his run all those years back.
Latest Warlord...haven't read it yet.
Couple more but I can't remember what.
Well in all fairness I was four years old when Damage's book came out...

ARGH!! So frustrating! I want to know more, but I haven't even got Villains United yet. The preview for this issue really got my attention and I just reread the BoP/SS crossover, and I want more! Hopefully I'll have the TPBs in hand by Friday.

Wow...what didn't I buy this week, I came into a little extra cash so thought I'd try some stuff out...not all releasedtoday though:
Legion of Super Heroes #2 - Superboy cover...all they had left, for only 2 bucks more.
Superman/Batman #73 - It's Paul, so I'll support it. Brightesat Day #4 - Last chance for this one.
Justice League: Generation Lost #4 - I've really enjoyed this so far.
GL Corps # 49 - I'm liking all things Green nowadays.
Zatanna #2 - So far, so good.
Superman #700 - What the hell.
You'll denote the trend in a second with these...I want to see if any of them grab my attention:
The Avengers #1 Secret Avengers #1 The New Avengers #1 Avengers Academy #1 Thunderbolts #144 (to be honest, I want this one to grab me...I used to love this book.)

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #121-122
These are exactly the kind of comics that used to annoy my best friend Jim when he was a kid. Instead of complete stories, or a 2-parter, each book contains (approx.) part 6 & 7 of 9-part stories. You read the first 16-pager, it's continued next issue. The 5-page back-up, ditto. Then, you get the NEXT issue. SAME DAMN THING! it's a good thing I bought JIM #123 about 20 years ago... but I'm not gonna dig it out just so I can re-read it now. (Until this weekend, I had NEVER read these 2 comics before!)
SUNSET CARSON #1 (1991)
AC Comics tribute to "The King of the Action Cowboys", a guy whose western films apparently featured more action than any other western films ever made-- and he did all his own stunts! The book, which contains 2 brand-new comics stories, came about about a year after Carson passed away, with an intro written by his wife. Of the 2 comics stories (both in color), one contains somewhat realistic art, while the other was drawn by Dick Ayers, and features a guest-appearance by THE HAUNTED HORSEMAN!
What cracked me up was the plot was slightly similar to a ROUGH RIDERS films I watched a few weeks ago, "GHOST TOWN LAW", in which U.S. Marshals from different areas converge on a ghost town to uncover criminal activity. In this case, Carson expects to meet Marshall Rex Fury, but instead, Fury shows up in his "spectral" identity. (I'm surprised Carson didn't put two-and-two together from the story's ending and figure out who the HH really is!)

This week's haul; Legion of Super-Heroes 3 X-Factor 207
I was this close to taking X-Factor off of my already anemic pull-list (having already yanked Guardians of the Galaxy and now Agents of Atlas, with some agonizing, as those titles have begun to fall down), but this issue stuck a hook in my cheek and dragged me back in.
Peter David sucks at super-heroes stories, I've decided. His strength is in characterization and drama. As long as the book is dealing with the various personalities and their issues, it sings. When he attempts an action sequence or actual super-hero storyline, wow, does he disappoint with the limp non-resolutions...
Awesome exchange of the day;
"What you obviously want is an open relationship!"
"No I don't!"
"You want to sleep with whomever you want."
"Oh. Well, then, yes, I guess I do..."

Seconded.
The rumor mill is swirling about this and a supposedly canned Vertigo Swamp Thing series by author China Mieville. Karen Berger herself said at SDCC that DCU editorial was getting the characters back.
So I am a bit optimistic, though if it does happen I'm hoping they keep the Wagner/Reeder team.
Posted by stuorstew on :
Amy Hadley Reeder is going to be the stand in artist on Batwoman apparently so I doubt she will remain on any relaunched Madame Xanadu in the DCU should it happen or Matt Wagner for that point.
I would expect mostly likely she will become part of the supporting cast of Zatanna or disapear all together; which is the most likely outcome unfortunately as it is not as if they were doing much with her before Vertigo took her.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I hope they relaunch as a DCU book too if it is indeed cancelled, but like OM said, with the current creative team. I suspected Reeder might be leaving anyway, but I at least need Matt Wagner.

If it is the end ( ) then we should at least be thankful that Wagner gave us a lot more with this character than he originally intended. I think his original plan was just to write that first 10 part origin arc and then move on, until he kept getting more ideas for her. Thank goodness he did because this book has been wonderful.

As Best Man at my brother's wedding, he gave me a bonus Groomsmen gift, which was a $50 gift cert for Barnes & Noble, which is my bookstore of choice. At my wedding, I gave my brother something similar to use for Dungeons & Dragons, which was his childhood favorite hobby (like comics is to me), so this was intended for me to use on some Graphic Novels. So I picked up:
Revolver - new GN by Vertigo Crime with a preview that looked really awesome.
Fables 1,001 Nights of Snowfall - very recently I was discussing with Lardy & CJ that I often don't get GN's because they are not part of my normal buying habits. This is a good example of that; I've followed Fables for YEARS now and it's my favorite of all the comics I buy (which is a lot). Yet it never occurred to me to get this. I actually completely forgot about it the second after I learned of its existence until only very recently.
Death: The High Cost of Living TPB - I read this years ago but don't own it, unlike all the Sandman issues, which I own. I remember loving it and wanted to add it to the collection. Also, my brothers & sister love, love, love the Sandman series and have never read this so this will be a treat for them.

I own the last two. It was given to me as a gift when it first came out, Fables, that is.

On the other hand, there were like four gaming books I wanted to buy... Yikes. My wallet!

I jus got my July shipment and now have the trades for FOUR EYES:Forged in Flames and Nova v.6: Realm of Kings to pick between for my bedtime reading over the next two nights.
I've already read Legion#3, Adventure#516 and Thanos Imperative#2 straight out of the box.

It's actually probably a good thing you're just getting it now... did you get the paperback version? I got the HC when it was first solicited, but it was 50% off... the TPB -just- came out, well over a year after the HC... at any rate, a FABLES must-have, like the early Prestige format one-shot...The Last Castle, I think? --which was important to the Blue/Riding Hood subplot. Definitely a good buy.
Posted by Cobaltus on :
I went paperback, which is how I prefer all my trades. Hardback just feels too much like I might break it. (I did have to get the Revolver hardback though, which I decided I'd do because I really want to read it).
I remember getting Last Castle which was likely put in my pull because it just Prestige format and not a trade. My CBS guys throw stuff in my pull sometimes if they think I might want it. I flipped through 1,0001 and I'm looking forward to the mix of storytelling techniques.
Also--you MUST review Four Eyes, which was a comic I recommended to Legion World! A new issue actually just came out, which I haven't gotten to yet.

FUCKING. UN. REEEAL.
Four Eyes was excellent! This is the best Joe Kelly I've ever seen. Enrico is an engrossing and endearing character; indeed, everyone is so REAL. Boccioni is at turns charming and vile. Fawkes is a good man, hardened by life but devout and torn by the very conscience his boss lacks. Enrico's mother is a tormented widow, afraid now for her headstrong son. The backdrop of the Great Depression is a wondrous if odd setting for a tale involving dragons, but it all works. The art is very European, and the story flows from panel to panel, page to page... the 2-page splashes were truly incredible, whether it was Mr. Fawkes in the hatchery or Enrico huddled asleep with the nascent dragon. I don't know how this book is doing saleswise, but I'm going to switch over to the pamphlets ASAP. Truly a remarkable series!

Just got this month's order in. That Bill Black-- what a guy. Only took 3 DAYS this time!!!
BEST OF THE WEST #6 -- this caught my eye as it has a NEW story among the 50's reprints, featuring Redmask, Durango Kid, Black Phantom, AND The Presto Kid in probably his ONLY appearance since the 50's. Artists on display: PETE MORISI, DICK GIORDANO, VINCE ALASCIA, FRANK BOLLE, Joe Certa & John Belfi, and of course, DICK AYERS.
FEMFORCE SPECIAL #1 -- the very 1st appearance of Black's ALL-GIRL superhero team. Hot, luscious babes in tight, revealing outfits fighting crime. What's not to like?
FEMFORCE: NIGHT OF THE DEMON FEMFORCE: OUT OF THE ASYLUM
--a pair of one-shot specials featuring Femforce members in "horror"-related stories.
HORRORS OF THE HAUNTER -- "Horror"-style Haunted Horseman stories. These appear to have originally been by Dick Ayers, but some of the pages have been changed around by Black & co. I recently found out Black created "Buckaroo Betty", the daughter of the original Ghost Rider, who later changed her name to "The Haunter". Spiffy, hmm?
A LOT of items at the AC Comics website are up for half-price now, Better for me!

Guys, even though I dropped most of my DC books, do you think I should pick up Zatanna again? Thinking about that thread Arachne (it was Arachne, right?) about no female heroes made me realize WW and Zatanna are the only two female heroes who have books.
Posted by profh0011 on :
"They probably only just now forgave him for replacing Ghost Rider in Tim Holt/Red Mask."
HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!
Of course, it was the Comics Code that put paid to Rex Fury's career as a masked vigilante. He kept running into more and more situations that screamed "HORROR COMICS!"-- pretty unusual for a WESTERN! (The '67 version-- a VERY different character-- is one of the biggest disappointments I've run across in years. Even with the same penciller... and even HE was disappointed in what they did to "his" character!)

Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :
Well I already bought the first two issues. I didn't drop it because it made me want to retch, like some books... I'm just worried it might get cancelled, usually a heroine book doesn't do well unless she's Wonder Woman or somebody's sidekick.

Then support it while it lasts. Great stories and good art. Fun all the way around.
Posted by Outdoor Miner on :
I'll second what Dev says about Zatanna. It's been pretty good so far.
In the long run, you should stick with a book because you like it (and can afford it). If you support it for no other reason than the book has a female lead, you're not doing yourself any favors.

...then I found out she just illustrated TWO pinups, one of Catwoman, and one of Lois Lane, so I decided no.
And while I was intrigued that Time Masters had the appearance of the Sword & Sorcery Starfire, I still wasn't going to buy it.
But I decided to throw my store owner a break and help it, even if it was on my store credit.
Secret Origin was exempt because it's a miniseries that's finally ending.

Adventure 517 *I liked that Rokk very clearly was affected by waking up and not knowing what happened. It makes him look like a classier guy than I was fearing, from the discussion.
Legion of Super-Heroes 4 *I just read it, and I don't even remember the villains name. That's how forgettable he is.
I like Kirt's indecision. If he changed his song and dance too soon, it would seem kinda unearned. If he remained totally nutbar, it would be stale. Paul's walking a nice line, here.
Projectra needs short white hair and a rounder face. This woman could be anyone. She could be Kara Zor-El. She's not Jeckie.
OTOH, I love that she's got some sort of extra-sensory powers still. Her last few appearances have been heavy on her using her illusion powers and I was wondering if Meltzer or Johns even knew that she now had various super-senses. Whether they forgot or just never got around to showing her use them, Levitz does not let me down.
The interactions between Shady and Kirt are not displeasing me thus far. I hope the speculation (fairly common over at the DC message boards) that she's just gonna sleep with him to mess with his head are not true, and what we've seen this issue suggests that she's genuinely intrigued, and genuinely wary and wants to 'keep her enemy closer,' so to speak, not planning some sort of angry hate-sex betrayal thing.
X-Factor 208 *PAD feels like he's coasting on the 'controversy' (which, frankly, is pretty un-controversial in the 21st century) and that the story suffers for it.
Avengers Academy 3 *Remember Teen Titans 1, with action *and* teen drama? We're on issue 3, and still, drama, no action. Training sequences, IMO, are no substitute for the real deal.
I'm pretty sure that these four are the only titles I'm collecting at the moment, and Avengers Academy and X-Factor are vexing me with their dicking around aimlessly. (Agents of Atlas, if it was doing anything worth reading, would be five.)

LoSH 5 Adventure 518 Avengers Academy 4
Avengers Academy remains on life support. What a limp-ass beginning to a series (exacerbated not merely by 'paced-for-trade' writing, but by the presence of *two* complete superteams, with the six students and their five teachers, resulting in almost everyone getting short shrift, character-wise). I'm mostly interested in Finesse, Reptil and Striker, and, I'm getting the impression that after their 'intro' issues (5 and 6), I'll be less interested in both Striker and Reptil...
And I ain't gonna buy this book for Finesse. She's not [i]that[i] interesting.

Over in The Stand, Harold Lauder officially creeps me out.
And the highlight of the Halloween Special is the Batman story by Billy Tucci, and the Teen Titans story featuring Klarion and two hipsters who managed to piss off said witch boy.

The Stand is not one to start with then, as it's one of his longer ones.
It's a great one, though.
Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :

The Stand is long but I think it reads pretty fast. Most of King's novels are pretty dense; a good one to start with is one of the best (and my favorite) Salem's Lot. It's long but is a quick read--I knocked it out in 2 days a few years ago because I couldn't put it down.
Posted by Dev Em on :
IT is another long but great read.
Posted by Chief Taylor on :
While IT is great, I feel it dragged in places (like get to the frickin' rock fight, already!!!) much more than The Stand did.
Salem's Lot is comparatively short, as is The Shining. Both are phenominal books but definitely slow burns. That's how King's books typically work. He's known for his frights, but his strengths are more in character development and richness of the story. When the frights do come, the character and story are what make them pay off so well, IMO. I've only read a handful, so I can't speak for the entire body of work, but everything I've read, I've enjoyed. And they all share those traits I describe.

I found the Shining a bit bloated. I understood what he was trying to do, and he did set the stage very well, but the book could still have shed a hundred or so pages and have been just as effective, if not more so.
His best book I think is still Pet Semetary as it so deftly melded a real sense of grief with such sharpened horror. What I always find funny is that the movie was the most faithful of all the King adaptations I've seen, but the least effective as a film.
And to keep this from being a total thread drift:

Absolutely! Reading comic book reviews is my #1 favorite thing to do on Legion World! Especially new series!
Also, did anyone pick up the Liberty Annual by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund? I grabbed the latest issue...I sometimes buy this and sometimes do not depending on how strapped I am for cash each year. Naturally, I'm a big believer in the CBLDF and want to support it.
The best part of the issue was the 2-page story featuring Milk & Cheese, two hilarious and scrappy animated, well, Milk & Cheese, and their violent tendencies. It was by Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer, and it was perhaps the single funniest comic book sequence I've read all year and probably for the last several years. I laughed out loud the entire 2 pages. I'm wondering if there is more Milk & Cheese material out there, and if so, I must find it.

I got...
Vampirella #1 Batwoman #0 Avengers: The Children's Crusade #3 The Stand: Hardcases #5 New Mutants #19
I bought Chaos War: Alpha Flight after getting curious from reading a DA journal entry by the artist, Reilly Brown.
I bought Thunderstrike #1 solely out of curiosity, and enjoyed it.
Also, I picked up two old issues of Superman/Batman, 63 and 64.

Trying HARD to resist making another In-Stock Trades order after just having done one two weeks ago because they've got a 50% SALE on trades from Dynamite! And the Marvel, Image & DC trades are still 38%! Must...resist...temptation...
(I know I come off as shilling for IST, but I know posters like Cobie and others have been putting off and putting off titles like The Boys, Battlefields and countless other excellent Dynamite books, so I had to post something...)

Btw, anyone picking up Marineman #1 by Image? It got 4.5 out 5 stars at CBR and actually looks really groovy from the articles I've seen on it.

Got Adventure 521 and Avengers: Children's Crusade 3 (again, by accident. Grr.).
Funnest new title I've seen is Dead Avengers 1. That version of Yellowjacket is a favorite character, and I also liked the Swordsman and Doctor Druid (apparently making me the only one, in the latter case! Even his fellow heroes can't stand him!). I know bupkiss about this Warcry person, but she's so '90s that it hurts. She's got Rob Liefield written all over her.
Gosh, I'd love to see a Legion of the Dead mini-series, with Lyle, Condo, a couple of Lu, Val, Andrew, and some surprise guest-stars, like Mentalla and Kid Psycho, in some adventure on the other side of the veil (not as zombies or black lanterns or anything gross, as themselves, just having some post-mortem heroic adventures)...
Posted by Blacula on :
^ With the amount of great "dead" DCU heroes I've been thinking for a long time that it would be cool to see some good writer give them all an adventure beyond the veil.
Geoff Johns kind of did it in that so-so Day of Judgment mini of a few years ago but the dead characters there (Jason Todd, Vigilante [Adrian Chase] - some others I'm forgetting) really took a back-seat to the Phantom Stranger and Hal Jordan and whoever else the living characters in that storyline were.
So the plot idea is still wide open for some good writer to pick it up and run with it.

I heard good things about Marineman, too.
In addition to the weekly stuff (DP, Adventure) I picked up Volumes 1, 2 & 3 of Unknown Soldier and Air. My Xmas present to myself, so I'll wait until the end of the month to read them.
Also got the Amory Wars: Second Stage HC. Started it, lots of variety in the art from chapter to chapter, l like the concept but will wait until I finish it to review.

These are really last week's purchases, but I was too busy to post about 'em:
Marvel Strange Tales #2 - (The giggly Eighties/Nineties fangirl in me couldn't resist the allure of both Hernandez Bros. drawing Marvel characters in one book. Eeeeee!!)
Adventure Comics #520 & #521
From the five-buck bargain table:
The All-New Atom: Future/Past TPB - A mixed bag all around, but still... what a waste that DC killed off such a potentially awesome character just so they could have back some Silver Age dude that I never warmed to when he was around the first time. Meh.
Tree of Love, Vol III - Patrick Atangan adapts Asian folktales into comic book form, using traditional art styles. I may have to write a review up of this one when I have time.

I thought long and hard about buying Batman Beyond 1 and Ultimate Captain America 1.
Ended up passing on BB because a glance thru looked like it didn't live up to the preview pages in last month's comics. I'll keep an eye on the reviews.
UCA, I passed up ultimately because of the $3.99 price tag. I LOVE Jason Aaron who writes it, but Marvel's always sure to stamp his stuff with the higher price. Doesn't help that I'm not crazy about the Ultimate line's edgier version of Steve Rogers. The preview page have him insulting his fellow soldiers, and that's just not him in any continuity. I'll keep an eye on reviews and consider the eventual trade if they're very positive.

I'm keeping my pull list emtpied, so this week I got:
current issues of:
BIRDS OF PREY
JL GENERATION LOST
BOOSTER GOLD
SECRET SIX
Since it was such a light week, I scoured the shelves for something else.
I rememebr reading nice comments about AVENGERS ACADEMY. I noticed 5, 6 and 7 on the shelf. Well, crapballs, I sure was behind. TOO behind to try it, I figured.
But then I noticed AVENGERS ACADEMY MUST-HAVE # 1, which apparently reprints issues 1-3 for the low low price of $3.99. JEENYUS, thought I... those Marvel bastards have made a sale!
I'm secretly hoping that I hate it, because if I love it, my shop had no copies of # 4 left.
Side-Note: I'm really j'adoring this MUST-HAVE reprint business, now that I am aware of it. IMO, they should do all their ongoings like this. Every 6th issue or so, do a MUST-HAVE collection of 3 issues. I would probably start buying a LOT more MARVEL if they did this. I think it is a brilliant idea to do these MUST-HAVEs at all. Good for you, Marvel.

I picked up some things that don't come out till next week, and glanced through the Wonder Girl one-shot and Titans.
Adriana Melo heavily changed Lady Zand's appearance. She now looks Indian when she originally had red hair and looked more European, but I like her take on Solstice and the colors used for it.
The art on Titans went from god awful to "AAHHHHHHH!!!!" with Philip Tan filling in for some pages, and Wallace once again shows he's incapable of using consistency, with one panel of Arsenal grinning like a maniac at the thought of Tattooed Man killing Slipknot, then telling Slade he's not a sadistic bastard.

It's a five-issue mini. I'm behind (perpetually) in my reading, so I won't get to it for close to a month. This article picqued my interest, Jer. Check it out and see what you think. I can say, having flipped thru it, that the pencils and color are absolutely GORGEOUS on this thing! (The article has sample pages.)
I'm a fan of the character, though I've read very little of the actual work on him. One thing I'm happy about is that they're actually having Ka-Zar IN the Savage Land instead of constantly taking him out of his wheelhouse as they did in the (though admittedly excellent) Waid/Andy Kubert series about a decade ago.
Interestingly, the artist on this is Pascal Alixe who spelled Coipel every few issues on the original Legion Lost series. His pencils are MUCH improved over his Coipel-aping style he used there. This is one of those inkerless books scanned from the pencils. Sometimes, this approach doesn't work, but the current Ka-Zar mini looks like one of the successes. The colors are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
Hope all this helps!

That art is unbelievable. I may just have to check this one out. I also like Ka-Zar, so I'd be in for a mini.

Just the two Legion books. I asked the store dude about The Intrepid Escape Goat (which I gave a shout-out to elsewhere in Dr. Gym'll's), but contrary to what the company's web page says, it's actually not available yet.

Way behind...but grabbed the following on a trip to an alternate shop this week (this should blow Cobies mind!):
Captain America #1 (Like what I have read of Bru's run on this title - trades from the library and such - so I decided to give the new series a try. Figured the wife might like it as well.)
Daredevil #1 (Good reviews and liking Waid helped this one jump into my hands.)
Alpha Flight #2 (Hoping this stays a solid read through the rest of the series)
Retroactive '70's The Flash (C'mon...a few more comics until I give up on Barry because he no longer is the character he is now.)
Flash: the Fastest Man Alive #1 (Old issue that I never got when I had no money whatsoever for comics. Need to fill in this series, and this was only a buck.)

Got Hannah some Stars and Stripes issues, including 0. Byrnes She Hulk 1, and a Superman/Plus Legion. A random Mary Jane comic.
Jonathan got a couple Avengers reprint comics, which he loves.
I grabbed a random Kirkman MTU with Cap and Black Widow. Vintage Magnus Robot Fighter 1 - 4. Secret 6 #1. 1 and 2 of the later Deadshot mini, plus a few Ultraverse books that I thought I needed...needed at least one of the three I grabbed.
Overall, well worth the time spent digging to see the kids faces, when sthey got them.

I must say, having finally read #1 of the Ka-Zar mini, that I really enjoyed it! It's basically about a corporation gaining access to the Savage Land and its resources by using one of its downtrodden tribes as its "in" under the auspices of offering humanitarian aid. It looks to be pretty gripping stuff as the majority of the other tribes oppose this action. Very topical without seeming preachy, and it looks like we're set up for some intriguing conflict.
And, oh, yeah the art is mesmerisingly lush and gorgeous!
So far, a definite recommend!

Batwoman #1 OMAC #1
Uncanny X-Force #15 Daken Dark Wolverine #14 ... a total dud. Scalped #52 Unwritten #29 X-Men Legacy #255 Alpha Flight # 4 Fear Itself #6
A few that didn't make the cut :
New Avengers ... dropped ... same story different month Journey into Mystery ... dropped ... I think my friend the young Loki is no longer featured in this book. A story about Mephisto didn't hook me.
Legion Lost didn't entice me. And I'll wait for the Swamp Thing TPB. From what I flipped through it looked like that format might be better for it's story than a monthly comic.
My store is still out of a lot of DC comics.

Legion Lost 7 Legion of Super-Heroes 7 Star Trek/Legion 6 X-Factor 231 Avengers: Children's Crusade 9
But still, Star/Trek Legion and Children's Crusade are done, so I'm down to the remainder of the above, and Avengers Academy and Legion: Secret Origins.

So suddenly theres this huge buzz around Danger Club #1, which comes out tomorrow! Websites giving it 9 out of 10 or 9.5 out of 10; comic book store owners declaring it the best comic of the year. Apparently this is going to be awesome!
I'm going to actually go tomorrow to see if I can get a copy. If anyone else does, please review. The five best comics I've read this year have basically all been new Image releases!

Ghostbusters 8 (this is a really fun book. Anyone that liked the movie would enjoy it.)
Night Force 3
Saga 2 (second print)
the Secret Service 1 (heard some good things here and there about this. It's M Miller, so that should make the story at least interesting...but the art is by Dave freakin Gibbons. Who has gotten nothing but better as time goes on. That alone sold me.)

I thought it was a good start to an interesting, different take on the spy / James Bond genre. I like the idea that 'what if James Bond had a deadbeat sister, complete with deadbeat husband and always in trouble son'. I have a feeling this is going to get *really good* really fast.

Need to finnish it, but I LOVED the whole bit at the beginning. Wonder if the kidnapping victim gave his approval for the appearance or not. Thread to start on that one once I finish the issue today.

I read in an interview the kidnapping victim was delighted and honored when he found out (beforehand) what they intended, and gave it an enthusiastic green light.

Posted by Power Boy on :
no ... for some reason I'm really curious about Secret ... but the first issue was just blood and tortue ... still really curious though. I didn't buy it I just flipped through it and put it back on the shelf. From what I saw, seemed like the plot and story were being kept a 'secret' from the reader as of issue 1.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Yeah, it was well done but it's obvious the majority of the story has not been shown yet. I'll review #2 when I read it to let you know what I think.
I've actually now hit the point where I trust Jonathan Hickman enough to buy what he rights, expecting a nice payoff. (That being said, his other new release, Manhattan Projects, definitely had a lot of WOW factor in the debut issue).

In this order of enjoyment:
Wolverine and the X-Men #17.
I DEMAND ALLRED DRAW WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN ALWAYS!!! This was one of the best comics I've ever read. yes *ever*. It was a day in the life of dupe, reminded me of a Buffy episode.
I giggled profusely, and throughout! Its rare a comic elicits an emotional outburst from me while I'm reading it.
The only thing I absolutely hated about the issue was ... next months cover. ha! It had Craplocks the Pheonix on it. boo! Issue #17 was a welcome and much needed departure from the ... just plain boring shit show of the A vs. X event.
New Deadwardians #7 of 8. (sadly) Shit just got real. and then ... there's a twist ...and then shit got more real. Best issue of the bunch. Its really got going now. I wish I got it as a trade though so I could read the mystery all at once. 8 issues just isn't enough.
Batman Incorporated #0 Frazier Irving can get me to buy anything. The story was quite nice too.
Ozymandius #3 (was good, the art made it, long fight scene seemed to drag, no real new info beyond the original Watchmen series. I'm enjoying the perspective of the smartest man in the world.)
Posted by Power Boy on :
I am really enjoying comic books a lot more since I hacked my titles in half. Comics are good again! and something I do to enjoy rather than ... watch my favorite characters be butchered. literally and metaphorically.
Ozymandius ... is on the border though, without the art it would be a *no get* also since its a short term book I can commit. Part of the appeal is just the coolness of the character.

Lessee. This week I got the following new books released this week:
Amazing Spider-Man Punisher American Vampire Happy Invincible Mind the Gap Dancer Debris Angel & Faith
Plus, one book from two weeks ago I had my comics pimp order for me which came in:
Stumptown Vol.2 #1
(Now, just HOW many of those are DCnU? )
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I also grabbed Stumptown v2 #1 but haven't read it yet.
FYI, Debris is one of the coolest series of all time. I'm loving the hell out of it! The artwork and coloring is possibly the single best delivery in 2012.
And Dancer has been terrific! Fantastic high paced crime / spy / thriller! It's a rare series where the action is so well written and drawn that I can actually admire every panel.
Love both of these minis.

My problem was I got some of those issues but not all of them. I couldn't for the life of me find #1 after checking like three CBS when it came out. Some of the comic book stores didn't even know what I was talking about. I also missed #4.
I did like what I read though. I never took the time to hunt those issues down.
Stumptown is exactly the Greg Rucka series I want to be reading. Crime / detective / strong female lead / rural / noir.
Posted by Lard Lad on :
I got v1 fairly cheap (basically cover price including shipping) in an eBay lot last year after hearing good things about it and knowing it had all those things going for it that you mentioned would automatically appeal. I think all or most of the issues in the lot were 2nd printing, but I never really care about that.
The art and story were engaging. It's maybe not really "noir" so much, though...I'd say it's more of a realistic take on what a modern private eye's cases and lifestyle might really be like. The female lead Dex is very down-to-earth and nothing like a 'Modesty Blaise'-type at all. Also, the twists are more natural, instead of being in there for optimum shock value. I'd compare it more in style and tone to the excellent Boom! series The Rinse, which both of us enjoyed.
I also liked how the sense of setting was so well-done. Rucka sets it in his hometown of Portland and artist Southworth uses extensive reference (as shown in the back text pages) to make it authentic.
Anyhow, I believe there's a trade out there, depending on how many issues of the four you're missing. Also, eBay and mycomicsshop.com (especially the latter!) are good places to find individual issues.
Posted by Lard Lad on :
I looked and the website I mentioned has every issue in stock. I'd say that if you already have #2, you're in good shape. I HIGHLY recommend this site!

I never even knew about this site before! Very cool! Thanks Lardy!
It's awesome for grabbing single issues / filling gaps!

If you spend fifty bucks, shipping's free. Plus, if you subscribe to their newsletter, they have weekly passwords that give you an extra 10% discount on certain groupings (ex: DC titles A-L, westerns, horror, etc.).
The coolest thing about the site is that they really don't seem to gouge you! You can get trades and a lot of back issues already discounted off the cover price!
(And no, I don't own stock in the company! )

Yeah, Lone Star Comics rocks... they were the first site I used for my subscription service before I found DCBS. I liked that they would combine sub and back-issue order shipments. I still get their newsletter, even though I haven't ordered from them in awhile. Great bunch of guys.

Uncanny Avengers #1 and Dr. Manhattan
Dr. Manhattan continues to be anything but what it says on the cover ... "A THRILLING PUBLICATION." Even Adam Hughes can't make a story interesting when it is the same one as last month!

This week's new issues of....
Hawkeye Daredevil Sword of Sorcery Minutemen LSH American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares Saucer Country Walking Dead Lone Ranger: Snake of iron
(Diamond fucked up, and the new Chew didn't ship to my CBS. It'll be another week or two. )
Two things from Dark Horse looked interesting: EX SANGUINE and BILLY THE KID'S OLD TIME ODDITIES AND THE ORM OF LOCH NESS. If any of you try those out, let a brutha know what you think, asap!

Hawkeye and Daredevil BOTH came out this week!
I need to haul nass to the CBS.
Posted by Power Boy on :
Today I got four of my favorite titles:
Daredevil 19 Hawkeye 3 ... which is a balls out joyride. Minutemen 4 Hellblazer 296
I was made nauseous every time I looked at an Avengers or an X-Book in the CBS. That's how good AvX was.
Posted by Power Boy on :
Unwritten 42 (I'm skeptical, seems like it has gone on too long)
Justice League Dark 13 continues to be fun
and Ghost 1 which I liked. I predict I'll be following this for some time.
........
I turned down Madame X 1 ... The art was 90s Vertigo art, which I like when it makes sense but I didn't want to take the chance that this book would ruin my impression of Madama Xanadu from her last excellent series.
I also took a raincheck on Debris. 4 looked good, 2 looked light and my CBS didn't have 1 ... so I will wait for the TPB.
Posted by Lard Lad on :
Got the new...
Fables Amazing Spider-man Debris Revival Invincible Chew Mind MGMT
Posted by Power Boy on :
the current World's Finest 6 ... was a hoot but they switched the art from KM doing the past ... and GP doing the present to KM doing Huntress' story and GP doing Power Girl's story.
KM's faces and fight moves during the Robin Huntress battle were spot on.
(I just realized i missed 5 ... my comic store dosnt seem to be getting everything lately ... and theyre so obnoxious ... they sell the free enormous bags you get at comic conventions.) I found myself rooting for Helena against my beloved Damien Wayne Robin ... because this is the old Huntress .... (I didn't like the deadly Huntress of BOP.) Can a meeting with Supergirl be far behind?
and Moloch #1 of 2.
it was alright, not sure if I'll get to but I decided to give it a go.
I passed on all things X ... even a shameless X book filled with Daredevil and Daredevilesque art.
I passed on Earth 2 as well, I flipped through it and got the gist ...Click Here For A Spoiler big fight, to the moon, GL's powers are tied to Earth ... no team. ect. DC comics are SO short.

Wonder Woman 14 (I am dipping my toes in. I hope it isn't a few splash pages of story in between adverts. But the NEW GODS ARE COMING. I had to try it. However I just realized the art ... is not as good as the usual Cliff Chiang ... who does the frickin cover ... I hate that shit!)
Daredevil the Man Without Fear 20.
Hawkeye 4. (My heart skipped a beat and I gasped when I saw this on the shelves. SWEET!)
Wolverine and the X-Men 21. (LOOKS GOOD ... and crossover-less!)
Deadpool 1 and 2. (based on LW recommendations)

Before Watchmen 5
I think finally a story that wasn't covered in Watchmen TOS? As it approaches the finale I am left wondering where this book has gone and is going .. clearly it is Nite Owl's story but ... That is one funny helicopter kick on the cover. And Dr Strange and Wong in this book add a lot of funny but it's still not as funny as #2.
