So, with some of us dropping titles, what is the state of your current pull list? I was just working on mine since DCBS updated with the current Previews and these are the titles on my current pull list:
WALKING DEAD FALLEN ANGEL JONAH HEX SUPERGIRL TEEN TITANS WARLORD SUPERMAN BATMAN TESTAMENT SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF SUPER HEROES 52 SECRET SIX ASTONISHING X-MEN SHE-HULK 2 ALL NEW OFF HANDBOOK MARVEL UNIVERSE A TO Z MOON KNIGHT LAURELL K HAMILTON'S ANITA BLAKE BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ARCHIE DOUBLE DIGEST BETTY & VERONICA DOUBLE DIGEST JUGHEADS DOUBLE DIGEST
Including two each of 52 (there are five issues in August) and two of SLoSH I'm spending less that $55 before shipping on my books each month. That's down from nearly $200 a month a little over a year ago when I was still buying from a local shop.
1 IDW title, 1 from Image, 1 Vertigo, 8 from DC, a whopping 4 from Marvel, 3 from Archie and 2 indies. Twenty books a month, about a low as I've gone while actively collecting. But that only averages out to about $2.75 a book.
This doesn't include any specials or one of's that I may get sometimes, just my regular pulls. But I'm still far beneath what I was spending in 2004/2005.
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
Actually, counting the double issues, I'm only spending about $1.82 a title. Far less than the average cover price.
Posted by Lightning Lad on :
And just to make me spend more money, I added three more titles after going through the Previews for August.
Fevre Dream - An adaption of George RR Martin's vampire novel. Just a preview now, not sure when the series will start.
Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars - A five issue mini of the first novel of ERB's John Carter of Mars series. My most loved series of novels growing up. Gotta have it.
CSI: Dying in the Gutters - I had forgotten about this one until seeing it again in Previews. Any comic that combines CSI, a comic convention and the 'death' of Rich Johnston deserves to be added to my pull list.
And there were two new Showcases from DC for August too. One for Batman and one for Challengers of the Unknown. But both were at a 50% discount making them only $8.49 each. Plus I've gotten every one so far and there wasn't one scheduled for July so I can justify two this month.

I’ll be routinely checking on the marquee titles (Bats, X-Men, etc) through their trades. It’s not like they need my money; plus trades are cheaper. That cuts out about half my list, saving me money and leaving me room for a few other titles.
By the by Scott, did you get Marvel’s Poe adaptation?
Posted by Matthew E on :
My pull list is embarrassingly small:
SLOSH 52
To which will eventually be added:
Justice League of America
And possibly:
Wonder Woman The All-New Atom Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters
I just don't have the disposable income these days.

Funny, I just changed/updated my pull list last week at my comic shop. Here's what it looks like as of now:
52 S&LSH Teen Titans Robin Outsiders (this is on the bubble. I'm giving it 2 more issues to convince me to keep it) Nightwing (teetering on the brink of extinction! I'm month to month on this one.) Ion (6 issue trial) Blue Beetle (6 issue trial) Bludhaven mini ==> Freedom Fighters Secret Six (6 issue trial) Checkmate (6 issue trial) Shadowpact (6 issue trial) Invicible Hunter Killer (if it ever publishes again) Vice (if it ever publishes again) Young Avengers New Mutants / Academy Ultimate X Men

I'm picking up the first issue, especially since it is a Niles book but haven't officially added it to my pull list yet.
quote:Originally posted by CJ Taylor: By the by Scott, did you get Marvels Poe adaptation?
Oh yeah. If it is Poe (Poe and Burroughs, the two Edgars, are always on my search list when I go through Previews) I'm getting it. The first issue just came in with my mid-May shipment but I haven't read it yet. Probably this weekend. I enjoyed Richard Corben's "Fall of the House of Usher" that Creepy(?) put out way too many years ago and was glad to see him doing this adaption too.

I picked up the first issue. It wasn't bad, but I'm not use to seeing Poe done creepy. I always thought he was more psychological than creepshow. With only 3 issues, I'm in til the end.

Off the top of my head:
Fantastic Four Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Young Avengers
Supergirl Battle for Bludhaven 52 (for now) Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters (might depend on how BFB turns out) The Blue Beetle (for now) Justice League of America Justice Society of America Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes Teen Titans
Magician: Apprentice Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake
Seems like I'm missing some stuff, but I'm not sure what.

I counted 90 titles in Cobie's list. To allow for limited series (probably replaced by new series), let's figure $2.50 per title per month. I'll also be conservative by only counting "52" once per month.
That's $225 per month or $2700 per year, minimum, and apart from sales taxes or box fees. And 1,080 issues, or roughly three to read per day, every single day.
How do you manage this? You clearly don't have a mortgage. Do you read a newspaper? Do you ever get out of the house, amigo? It stuns me, to have this much paper flowing into anyone's life. Whether it's all read or not ... and if you don't read some of it, I have to think that becomes a waste.
I'm not trying to simply be critical. It's just so far from my experience -- where I am swamped if I manage to read two titles per month consistently -- that I simply cannot comprehend it. I'm more stunned than anything else.

Grey, the only real way it works is that its not just my collection/hobby, I share it with my Dad and brother.
We have a 30% discount on all titles, and split the comics three ways. It basically comes out to about $40 a week, which is then split b/t the three of us.
As for reading them, I actually really do read almost all of them. There was a time when I'd read all the DC and Marvel's in the first day of the week, but I'm too busy now .
I read some sections of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, but not like I did in college. I read the WSJ b/c I get a free subscription at work, and then I'm basically just looking for stock tips to invest my 401(k) (yay Caterpillar Corp.! Good return in last year's third quarter!). When I read the NYT, I really like their International News section, which I feel is better than most anything else you can get in print so easily. Their sports section is great too since I'm a Yankees fan, and they have a great Monday football section during football season.
Now, when I was a grad student, I'd read two full books a week, on top of alternative reading for research papers, on top of all those comics, tons of time on this website, and other odd things. I don't really watch TV, so maybe that helps
And I still go out at least four times a week to party

Versus a year ago I've actually cut back in a major way. With the cost at my local CBS translating to 50-pesos to 1 US$, it's a struggle to choose to buy comics over petrol.
Ongoing - 1. Supergirl & The Legion of Super-Heroes 2. Young Avengers...season 2 better come soon
Limited Series - 1. 52...just curious how it all turns out 2. Eternals...that old Gaiman magic just pulled me in wallet-first 3. Justice...great story + art 4. SOLO...up to the very end indeed! 5. All-Star Superman...the hint of an LSH appearance + great stories + excellent art = pull list!
Maybe - 1. Justice League of America...I intend to get #0 & #1 but I'm being very cautious. As before, I'm purposely avoiding the mainstream/21st century DC universe. I guess I'm just too exhausted from the whole crossover madness that's been running for almost 3 years. I prefer the sanctuary of the 31st century.
TPs & Books - 1. Absolute Sandman...kick @$$! 2. Any new Fables TPBs...great, great series + art! 3. Any new Y: The Last Man TPBs...great concept + stories allegedly ending at #60

So after years an years of being a CBS nomad - In LA you can do that kind of thing, I know I am so spoiled I have finnally decided to settle down and make a pull list for Meltdown on sunset. They are < 1 mile from my work and I have conned some coworkers into walking with me which makes it fun. They limit it to 15 so I had to make some choices.
1. 52 - For a weekly book this has been extremely consistant 2. JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA - this is getting astoundingly good lately 3. RUNAWAYS - on the edge of my seat after last issue 4. ALL STAR SUPERMAN - This has been head and shoulders above everything else in both writing and art 5. SUPERGIRL AND THE LEGION OF THE SUPER-HEROES - This is intricately crafted with incredible character chemistry. I am addicted! 6. X-FACTOR - Solid writing and of course Quicksilver 7. BIRDS OF PREY - Gail Simone is a very talenented writer. Oracle is one of my all time Faves and now Big Barda! 8. ASTONISHING X-MEN - Joss Whedon and John Cassiday! Great character insights and top notch art. 9. CHECKMATE - Super powered espionage! Black Ops! Amanda Waller. This is definitely not a kid's book. It continues to surprise me. 10. MANHUNTER - The grass roots campaign to keep this book alive has been out of control so I am back to reading it. So far I am loving it. 11. SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL - This has been a great study on what makes superman a complex character... trust me Singer has no clue how to deal with this character 12. ACTION COMICS - Wow 4 super titles on this list... How did this happen? The super family used to be so boring. This book is being written by Richard Donner right now and you get a feeling it is his response to how Singer messed up 13. NEWUNIVERSAL - I don't have much experience with the New Universe outside of the Exiles arc but it has been intriguing so far 14. INCREDIBLE HULK - Husband's Addition. Very much The incredible Conan since the Planet Hulk started. Interesting, but very macho 15. New X-Men - Husband's Addition. I haven't been into it lately but it is amusing and there are some interesting subplots.
Runners up ----------- ETERNALS - only 1 issue left in this miniseries WELCOME TO TRANQUILITY - Not ready to commit yet. ULTIMATES 2 - only 1 issue left & it isn't out till March SILENT WAR - This is a mini and it hasn't started yet. ALL STAR BATGIRL - This wont be out for almost a year YOUNG AVENGERS - This is on hiatus for another month or so at least

1. 52 - excellent series. I am really enjoying the way in which nearly every part of the DCU is explored.
2. 100 Bullets -great crime series. 3. All Star Superman fantastic art and very inventive and wonderful stories. what's not to like?
4. Checkmate- The best spy comic out, next to Queen & Country. 5. Conan- old school sword and fantasy. 6. Criminal -another crime, noir book. blame my old man. he introduced me to Double Indeminity at an early age.
7.Fables - fantastic series. all the child hood fables brought to life, and it's not always pretty.
8. Invincible- a superhero book with almost as many supporting cast and plot lines as the LSH at full roster.
9. Justice Society of America -two issues in and I am hooked. 10. Legion of Super-Heroes -needs no explanation on this board. 11. Powers- this is the best book that Bendis writes.
12. Red Sonja -bold, wide-screen sword and fantasy adventure. don't let the skimpy outfit and variant covers fool you. This is a classic in the making.
13. Samurai -great art, excellent story. and all the ads are placed in the back after the story! 14. Y The Last Man -an exploration of a world where all the men but one have died. another home run from Vertigo.

Wow, you guys spend a lot on comic books - I always try to stay focused on my favorite books AND get the most important stuff to be able to talk about the main events (like Civil War).
My current list:
DC: Legion, Titans (think about leaving), 52->Countdown, JSA and JLA (to get the Legion buzz there), Brave and the Bold, Justice
Marvel: Ultimate Squadron Supreme (or whatever the title is called), Squadron Supreme, Amazing Spiderman, New Avengers, Avengers Initiative, X-Factor
Image: Noble Causes, Dynamo 5
Indies: Everything Giffen does for BOOM -> Hero Squared, Planetary Brigade, Dominion
Lots of Ebay buying recently cause US comics are cheap on German Ebay -> Runaways TPBs, Millers Daredevil, JSA, Authority, Fables...
Posted by Stealth on :
Marvel: X-FACTOR, Champions (upcoming), Cable & Deadpool, Captain America, Uncanny X-Men, Adjectiveless X-Men (last three in danger of being dropped.)
DC: Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Legion of Super-Heroes.
IDW: Fallen Angel
Dark Horse: Conan (ongoing book only)

Well, as I've said, I split a large comic book collection with my father and brother, so although I have the power to drop titles usually, there are cases where my dad or brother wants to keep collecting so we don’t. But I do stop reading. So here’s the ones I’ve stopped buying, or just reading:
Flash – I hate this comic more than anything else right now. Nightwing Robin Outsiders Batman Confidential Hawkgirl – ending Firestorm – ending Mystery in Space – ending Tales of the Unexpected - ending
Ms. Marvel – dropped Wolverine: Origins – dropped Ant-Man – dropped Heroes for Hire – dropped
For me: After the recent drop of a few:
Here’s basically what my pull list would look like DC 52 Countdown Detective Comics Batman Catwoman Superman/Batman Superman Action Comics Supergirl Supergirl & the Legion of Super-Heroes Wonder Woman Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis Green Lantern Green Lantern Corps Green Arrow Birds of Prey Atom Blue Beetle Justice League of America Justice Society of America JSA Classified Teen Titans Outsiders Shadowpact Checkmate All-Star Superman All-Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder Jonah Hex The Spirit Dr. Fate – will get Booster Gold – will get
Marvel Fantastic Four Captain America Iron Man Amazing Spider-Man Sensational Spider-Man Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Daredevil She-Hulk Hulk Black Panther New Avengers Mighty Avengers Avengers: Initiative Young Avengers Runaways Thunderbolts Astonishing X-Men Uncanny X-Men X-Men X-Factor Nova Ultimate Fantastic Four Ultimate Spider-Man Ultimates 2 Thor – will get Starlord – will get
Independents Fallen Angel Powers Kurt Busiek's Astro City (when its published)
Vertigo Fables Y: the Last Man
Meaning to pick up Walking Dead – now that Scott has given me the first trade to read Cable/Deadpool – because I feel I owe it to Reboot at this point Lone Ranger – looks cool
I probably left something out, as just as I was typing this, work went into crisis mode…

LIMITED SERIES
1. Countdown - tho' i'm looking at cutting this out already & trade-wait 2. All-Star Superman - the only Supes comic I can stand right now 3. Amazons Attack - completist that I am I'll get it til #6, but the story's so-so

I've cut back a lot from 1 year ago. Guess I've already gotten mainstream DCU fatigue with the crossovers and the event minis.

So I have gotten rid of alot of the titles I usually get and now I am only getting...
X-Men New X-Men Astonishing X-Men (when it comes out) Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes (I just started 2 days ago so I have to #11 and getting the rest of the series tomorrow)
I want to start collecting more DC titles so I am thinking I might get
Teen Titans and the Justice League, are there any really good series that I should get?

Whats everyone currently getting?
For me, its easier to ask me which DC titles I don't collect. I think that may be like 4. I need some titles to be canceled really quick before I start with a bunch of new ones.
Posted by Future on :
Right now my reading list is sparse. I got back into comics six months ago and within three months from that ended up dropping 2/3rds of the books. I just couldn't get behind a lot of the new directions (and it's a shame so many series DID have new directions after only two years gone).
I'm reading LSH, LSH in the 31st Century, and Action Comics or whichever Legion related guest spot is out. My only other books are Booster Gold, Tiny Titans (though I'm not sure how long I'll stick with it), and Transformers Spotlight. I'm enjoying IDW's spotlight books better than the actual Transformers series they're supposed to compliment.
This is the first time ever I'm collecting comics that I don't have a Marvel title (or specifically, an X-title) I'm picking up. Though I hear X-Force is good and I'm sure X-Factor still is, Messiah Complex and the negative statuo quo that it left behind killed my X-Men drive for right now.
Posted by Reboot on :
Currently following (excluding just-ended miniseries, in rough order of goodness from best to least): Incredible Hercules Nova Captain America X-Men: First Class Marvel Adventures Avengers Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius (quarterly) X-Factor She-Hulk Thor
On the bubble or going: Thunderbolts - will drop when Ellis leaves & Gage takes over Transformers - I'll probably continue to follow Furman's Spotlights, etc, but I've jumped off the main series since All Hail Megatron looks crap New Warriors - it's been technically bad, but fun for a while. The fun's dissipating
Likely adds: Captain Britain & MI:13 Guardians of the Galaxy
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I just dropped a bunch of Marvel and DC's. Here's where I'm at (please keep in mind I share this with my father, so I only pay half the cost at an already 25% off, and he may want some that I don't and vice versa).
Captain America Daredevil Fantastic Four Amazing Spider-Man Thor Iron Man Incredible Hercules Nova Guardians & the Galaxy Runaways Thunderbolts (not safe post-Ellis) New Avengers Mighty Avengers Avengers: Classic Avengers: the Initiative (not safe) Uncanny X-Men X-Men: Legacy Astonishing X-Men X-Factor Ultimate Spider-Man Hulk* (* = father wants, I don't read)
Superman Action Comics Batman Detective Comics Superman/Batman* Nightwing Robin Supergirl* Wonder Woman Flash Green Lantern Green Lantern Corps Green Arrow/Black Canary The All-New Atom Blue Beetle Booster Gold Brave & Bold Justice League of America Justice League (when it comes out) Justice Society of America Teen Titans Batman & the Outsiders Legion of Super-Heroes Shadowpact Uncle Sam & the Freedom Fighters (latest mini may have lost me forever) Checkmate All-Star Superman All-Star Batman & Robin (I get this because its so awful I can't help it) Jonah Hex The Spirit
Trinity - will give it a chance Final Crisis Legion of 3 Worlds
Powers Fallen Angel Fables Mice Templar Umbrella Academy Dan Dare (just picked up, will review and decide) various others I've just picked up that I'll review and decide
Because I just dropped a bunch of titles, I've put a hold on getting anything new from DC or Marvel unless it looks spectacular or someone personally reccomends it to me. They've just let me down too often. And mini-series especially won't be added unless I hear rumors its the greatest thing since 1930's the Shadow #1.
I may have left one or two out, this is by memory...

My comics buying habit is always a great reflection of my financial stability. If I'm buying lots of comics - times are good. If I'm not - they're not.
Now's one of the bad times so I'm trying to keep it down to around 10 books a month or so (give or take a few what with minis and cancellations and so on).
Here's how things are looking for me at the mo...
Buying -
Action Comics (dropped if Supergirl becomes an integral book) All Star Superman (will probably leave when Morrison does though) Batman Brave and Bold Green Lantern Justice League of America Justice Society of America (on the bubble) Superman (dropped if Supergirl becomes an integral book)
Final Crisis (when it starts) Final Crisis : Legion of 3 Worlds (when it starts) Final Crisis : Rogues Revenge (when it starts) Justice League (when it starts - maybe, don't like what I've heard so far) Madame Xanadu (when it starts)
House of Mystery (in TPB - maybe, will wait and see how the reviews go) Scalped (in TPB - great book, people should check it out) Walking Dead (in TPB - great book, people should check it out)
Dropped for Financial reasons -
Astro City Batman & the Outsiders Blue Beetle Booster Gold Checkmate Fables (though I was also tiring of this book anyway) Green Lantern Corps Jack of Fables Jonah Hex Wonder Woman
(though I would start picking up any or all of the above again if my money problems improved or they got killer new storylines)
Dropped for Hatred reasons -
Green Arrow & Black Canary Teen Titans
(change the creative teams on those books and on Titans and I might start buying them again though)
Of the books I'm currently reading I'd say Walking Dead, Scalped, All Star Superman, Brave & Bold and Action Comics are probably the best and I urge everyone who hasn't to check them out.

I'm also reading Age of the Sentry and loving it. Its actually pretty damn funny. I tried to get several others to try it when I posted to the Supreme (Alan Moore) thread.
How is Skaar: Son of Hulk? I never picked this up and probably should have, because Planet Hulk was the best Hulk story since PAD in the mid 90's. I likely *could* find back-issues, which I don't mind doing since I'm already hunting for back issues for the Walking Dead. This is why I rely on you 'Boot . I'd keep forgetting to buy Agents of Atlas and similar titles if you and others didn't remind me.
In other Marvel related news, I'm considering putting an end to Runaways. Thus far, all non-Vaughn Runaways stories have been pretty weak. The relaunch is especially 'meh' but with the added annoyance of Humberto Ramos' art which I've resigned myself to the fact that its just not for me. Whedon's arc was horrible too--just another piece of evidence to show me that Whedon's comic book stories are not very good at all with some exceptions (rather than the other way around).

It's been a slow build, but it's getting better. #5 came out this week (which, thanks to Marvel's prelidiction for putting out random one-shots right now even when the regular writer does them, is actually the sixth issue) and it's probably the best yet. I don't think the decision to slice off a big chunk of each issue for a [related] backup story (possibly because of Ron Garney's slowwwnessss) has helped it.

I can't wait to read Agents of Atlas. I just today during lunch went and bought the entire first 6 issue mini-series via back issues at my local CBR (feh to trades!), after somehow missing it the first time around.
'Boot, I also picked up Skaar #3-5 to try and jump in and see how what I think, but haven't had a chance to read them yet. I have this weird logic about how first issues usually suck but by the third issue a good comic can become a really good comic.

I tried out #3-5; it was 'not bad' but I'm not sure I'm going to stick around for more. Overall, its more Conan meets sci-fi than anything thus far and I'm not sure its my cup of tea.
However, the main good thing going for it is Garney's art. VERY impressive...that alone could make me come back for more. I also like the set-up with each issue having a back-up feature filling in the plot. I'm on the fence on this one so it'll come down to impulse.

I realized we don't have an opposite thread of the 'Any Recommendations?' thread, probably because it would be one big complain-fest, so I figured I'd mention here some comics on the pull list that I just haven't been enjoying and am considering dropping. Since often some people will say "why do you keep buying it?", I'll repeat what I've told other posters I know: my father has been buying comics since 1960 and so now I buy them with him; we split the collection and we split the monthly bill. That means that sometimes he has titles he wants and I have titles I want. For instance, I pick up all the Vertigos while he makes sure we buy all the 8-9 traditional Silver Age Marvel franchises and most of the traditional DC ones (so say, we'll always be buying Iron Man, Cap and Thor whether they're bad or not). So sometimes I have in front of me the comics I'm not particularly liking because my Dad wanted to buy them. For instance:
Superman / Batman - Does anyone even buy or read this anymore? I basically breeze through it on occassion but hardly do that anymore. Its a shame since this could the perfet title for big talents to do a quick 4-6 run on. The book basically sells itself with the two stars.
Wonder Woman - I love Gail but am just not liking this long running storyline. Its probably the weakest thing she's done in awhile, and I wonder how much is editorial influence trying to stretch this out into an event where WW must exit the DCU (and thus the JLA) for a time. I liked her previous stories relating to fantasy / mythology elements better.
Green Arrow / Black Canary - I'm also not really enjoying this title at all anymore since the relaunch. Splitting the two stars won't help. I think marrying them was a big mistake; now all they ever do is bicker and make-up and instead of adding tension it just adds a layer of 'nagging' on both their sides. Besides, we all know this story will happen in several years (and don't even pretend you think it won't): some writer will have Green Arrow cheat on Black Canary, who is now his wife, and he'll look like an even bigger jerk than ever, and she'll look like a victim. Then a few years later another writer who likes them together will have her take him back (again), but now it'll be as the wife who was cheated on, and she'll look even worse. I already hate that storyline. But mark my words: it'll happen.
Posted by Arachne on :
Yeah, I gave up on Green Arrow/Black Canary awhile back, too. I'm still buying Wonder Woman, but I haven't read an issue in months.
I'm seeing a new comic shop now and they don't bring much in unless you order it, so for the first time I have a pull list.
DC
Wonder Woman (But, as I said, I'm way behind reading it.) Crisis Aftermath: Escape (Have to catch up on Wonder Woman before I read it.) Adventure Comics (Hope springs eternal.)
Marvel
Pride and Prejudice (I love the covers, but #1 never showed up, so I'm waiting. Although it's not like I don't know the story.) New Mutants (Like I'm going to miss out on a Dani comic.) Dark Wolverine (Have I mentioned how much I like this?) Dark Avengers ('cause Daken's in it, but it's not as good.) Uncanny X-Men (Just started, I'm tired of not knowing what's going on. (And Daken's in it.)) X-Factor (Behind on reading this one, too, even though Shatterstar's in it. ) X-Force (Surprisingly good, though violent.)
Plus, various Utopia and Necrosha one shots.
I think that's everything.

I think this book's the epitome of mediocrity in writing. Combined with Tracer Land's complete inability to convey a story, a very bad buy. Earth-Z Fraction Should Give The Job Back To Our Matt Fraction.

Yeah, I heard it's not great, but almost any X-character could show up in it, and I don't want to miss my favourites anymore. I guess I'm not as over my completionist tendencies as I thought.

I picked up Dead @ 17 #1 a few weeks ago and finally read it today. I guess its the first issue of the latest miniseries and there have been others before it. I really didn't know anything about the series previously. My impressions were...it was "okay". I kind of got the jist of what was going on but didn't understand all of it and overall, the story was a little slow, and there wasn't that much bang for your book for a whole issue.
On the other hand, the lead characters seemed interesting and there certainly is a moody, dark feel to the series. It involves the force of hell trying to take over Earth and I've read a lot of those types of stories in my day, so I'll need something to make it different. They seem to do that with the two lead chararacters.
The art is also quite excellent, which is why I picked it up. Its cartoony but very dark & sexy, which makes it work on a cooler level. But there is actually more 'pin-up' type shots than I thought would be in there. Not over the top, but a little gratuitous.
Will I pick up another issue? Hm. Hard to say. I might not, but I'll browse in the store and if it seems to pick up a little maybe I will purchase afterall.
Anyone else ever hear of this comic or buy/read it?
Posted by Stealth on :
I dropped Guardians of the Galaxy, too. It had become one of those "Why Do You Keep Buying It?" books that Cobie described earlier in this thread. Honestly, I think the only issue that fully lived up to the book's potential was # 7, and that was a long time ago. Sure, I'll miss some of the characters (especially Cosmo), but there's not enough of them that I really care that much about. It doesn't seem like Paul Pelletier is coming back anytime soon, which is a big minus, as is DnA's inconsistent tone (to give one example, I hated the way they wrote Maelstrom's dialogue.) Guess I'll just have to stick to re-reading my Dreadstar collection (I do seem to be re-reading a lot of old stuff lately.)

Cobie I have to make a couple of suggestions:
The Web is getting a new writer soon- Matt Sturgis. I recommend giving him a few issues, he's always brings a little excitement to a title. And you know you loved him on House of Mystery and the tail end of Blue Beetle.
B.P.R.D. is a great horror comic without being all gothy or gory. Mignola and Arcudi are telling long form stories like Bendis and Johns, with individual arcs having a complete feel to them. You're welcome to trade trades sometime and let me know what ya think.

Ceej, can't wait to see your reviews of everything you haven't gotten to yet, particularly the Dark Horse titles.
For the Web, I'm sticking around until Sturges comes on and seeing what he does with the title. I like his quirky writing style. I might just not pick up #3 and #4 until he gets there.
B.P.R.D. is something I might hit up in trades (Hellboy too). We had talked about this a year ago--there's a thread for it on LW if you search under "Hellboy", so I'll be awaiting any reviews you might give on it. Hellboy / B.P.R.D. is one of those rare instances where the movie was so damn awesome I felt like I needed to check out the comic.

So the May solicits are out and that means it's time for me to think about what I'm going to feed my addiction with that month.
A combination of starting a new Law degree (and all the time and money that entails) and a general dis-satisfaction with where comics are going (price-wise and content-wise) has me buying fewer books than ever though.
For the first time since I got back into comics in my early 20s I truly wonder whether I'll still be reading them this time next year.
Anyhoo, here are my picks -
CURRENT BOOKS
1. The Brave and the Bold ... without a doubt my favourite book. All those people who complain about the "modern, post-Identity Crisis" DCU should read this book! 2. Green Lantern ... Geoff Johns has created a movement with this book. 3. Adventure Comics ... have enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would but its glory days are just around the corner (I hope). 4. Batman and Robin ... Morrison's Dick-as-Batman tales have not been anywhere near as good as his Bruce-as-Batman ones (IMO) but there is still a creativity and energy in this title that most other books lack. 5. Madame Xanadu ... still loving this blend of Vertigo and the DCU.
6. The Walking Dead (in TPB) ... the most addictive thing I've ever read! Even though I *despise* certain characters and story choices I MUST. KEEP. COMING. BACK. FOR. MORE.
UPCOMING BOOKS
1. Brightest Day ... I LOVE the Aqua-verse! This book is a lock! 2. Legion of Super-Heroes ... as is this one. 3. Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne ... Grant Morrison's foray into the Bat-verse has started to show some wear but I've come with him this far, I may as well go all the way.
MAYBES
1. Green Lantern Corps ... for a long-story reason I haven't read this book in a while - even though I've been buying it. Wondering if I should just stop buying until I catch up on my reading? 2. Birds of Prey ... the internet excitement about Simone's return has rubbed off on me - even though I didn't particularly love her last sojourn with this team. 3. Zatanna ... a long-time fave character but Paul Dini's last Vertigo one-shot with her was nothing special and I *cannot stand* her stripper boots! The artist is fantastic though. 4. DC Universe: Legacies ... I am a sucker for this type of project but when I'm tightening my belt I wonder if I really need it? Especially at that price!
5. Air (in TPB) ... I want the time and money to read this! 6. Scalped (in TPB) ... as above. 7. The Unwritten (in TPB) ... ditto.
RECENTLY DROPPED
1. Detective Comics ... I've come to the decision that I just do not like Greg Rucka's style of writing - and the Question back-up was the biggest snooze that ever snoozed! 2. Doom Patrol ... there were some Ups but far too many Downs in this very uneven and disappointing book. 3. Superman: Secret Origin ... started off with a bang but then very quickly fell away. Between this and the awful Flash: Rebirth has Geoff Johns begun to lose his lustre?

Time for an update.
Since I posted last (it's on page 7, if you care), a number of minis have run their course and some other got dropped, so now we're at:
DC (incl. Vertigo and Wildstorm): Adventure Comics (decided to keep it. I'll miss Krypto) Brave & The Bold (One of the best books you aren't buying) Brightest Day Superman War of the Supermen Detective Comics Batman Batman & Robin (I've really enjoyed this) Batman:Streets of Gotham Doom Patrol Secret Six Flash Green Lantern Justice League of America Justice Society of America JSA All-Stars (because it's the JSA, and things may get better with Magog gone) Power Girl (not sure if I'll keep this; I have no interest in Generation Lost) R.E.B.E.L.S First Wave Doc Savage The Spirit Fables Hellblazer The Unwritten Authority:The Lost Year Joe the Barbarian Madame Xanadu House of Mystery Astro City (will be interesting to see if it can maintain quality as a monthly) Ex-Machina (winding up soon)
Upcoming: Zatanna, LSH, DCU:Legacies, Return of Bruce Wayne
Action Comics was dropped last August, but Paul Cornell is enough to convince me to check it out again. Authority and Booster Gold were both dropped recently.
Marvel: Official Handbooks
(Marvel is trade only these days, and on rare occasions at that.)
Other: Hellboy/BPRD Atomic Robo Weird World of Jack Staff Lone Ranger Castle Waiting (when it appears) Irredeemable Incorruptible Comic Book Comics (if it's still being published) Green Hornet Green Hornet:Year One (they launched too much too quickly. I'm not sure I'll stick around after these minis and I'm not getting the others) Mouse Guard RASL Tales Designed to Thrizzle Zorro Okko: Cycle of Air Black Terror Project:Superpowers[/QB][/QUOTE]

Actually, that's one that I'm slowly catching up on in trades. I did happen to glance at the most recent issue, though.

I like it, and I think it's a good change of pace for Smith after BONE. In fact I'd say it's a brave thing for Smith to try, since it's different enough that he risks losing his audience.
I'm very impressed with how well he does ugly and gritty art-wise, especially since even the Rat Creatures in BONE looked cute.
The early issues of RASL weren't altogether exciting, and the combination of a slow pace and a slow release schedule really hurt the book early on. But I think it's on track now.
Posted by Jerry on :
I only have the last two issues, and thought they were pretty good. Interesting concept, I love that parts of it take place in Tucson, my current hometown.
Posted by CJ Taylor on :
I dropped the book after the 4th issue. It was a bit slow, and I lost track of when it came out. But I did like the story and plan to buy it in trade.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
OM, your list makes me wish you were posting more in January, our "Comic Book Review Month", as I'd love to hear your opinions on various comics you're collecting.
- I've been loving Zorro. I really feel like I missed the boat on Lone Ranger and am trying to hunt down the earliest issues. I hope these series are continuing but I can never tell with Dynamite's solicits.
- How is the Weird World of Jack Staff? Is this a quarterly comic? I really should pick it up but never pull the trigger.
- Also curious about Black Terror and Project Superpowers, as I'm a longtime student of comic book history. I love those old Lev Gleason covers particularly!
Keep us updated on what you're collecting! I have a very high opinion on *your* opinions!
Posted by Raging Bull on :
I've been losing interest in Doom Patrol, and will likely drop it after the current story ends. This means that the only ongoing titles on my pull list going forward will be Adventure, plus the forthcoming Legion and Atlas titles.
There will still be a few limited series and individual issues that I'll be picking up, but for the near future, I'm going to cut down my comics list to save money for some of my other hobbies and for travel.

I believe all these books are supposed to be continuing, though Lone Ranger and Jack Staff have always had problems coming out regularly.
Jack Staff is writer/artist Paul Grist's shot at creating a superhero universe mixing English comic archetypes and his own creations. It's a lot of fun. Somehow he manages to give his characters enough story beats that everything works despite the large cast.
Posted by Sarcasm Kid on :
I've decided something.
I dropped JLA, as well as the rest of the Arsenal mini and any more issues of Green Arrow. I'm extending my personal ban on anymore books with "Justice League" in their title, as well as anymore Titans books.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Miner, you convinced me to give Lone Ranger a try and I liked it well enough that I went back and picked up several back issues. I'm going to try to get all 20 or so and start from the beginning.
I also will give Jack Staff a try as well, I think. The more diverse my pull list the better these days.
Meanwhile, I had a briefly sad feeling tonight as I read through a stack of about 12 comics, in a way that affects my pull list. Dan Jurgen's Booster Gold run is ending (and I'm really cautious about how I'll feel about Giffen and Dematies coming on, as I much prefer the new status quo for Booster), and GotG and Nova are going on hiatus--hopefully not forever, but who knows? That means 3 really solid sci-fi superhero comics are kind of coming to an end; and lately that's been my favorite sub-genre of superheroes. I usually would read the DnA Marvels with FF and actually rope in Booster every month because the energy and sci-fi felt like it fit in there.
Here's hoping GotG and Nova start back up after this Thanos thing.

Glad you liked Lone Ranger. I'm still enjoying as well, though decompressed does not begin to describe the storytelling at the moment.
Hope you like Jack Staff.
I dropped Booster Gold because of the upcoming Generation Lost connection. Nothing against Giffen, I'm just not interested.
I'm not surprised about GotG and Nova. Despite their quality, I think it's been the crossovers and events that have kept them going. Sci-Fi is such a hard-sell in comics these days. I hope they do survive in some form.

I'm definitely keeping Booster Gold on the pull list for the immediate future. Like Cobie, I'm a little trepidatious that evrything Johns and Jurgens did will be totally dumped in favor of slapstick. But given the pedigree of the creators and their love for the character, I've gotta give it a chance. If nothing else, I'm betting it will be absolutely hilarious--and there are worse things to get out of a comic than a few belly laughs every issue.

SK, love to hear your thoughts on Black Terror and Project Superpowers! What do you like? Dislike?
I personally love the history of these characters (I'm a Golden Age history buff) but I just never pulled the trigger on buying these...Alex Ross's writing leaves me cold sometimes (whereas I love his art).

That's completely irrelevant, especially since DC's been publishing a lot longer.
The point is that the Project:Superpowers guys (and I like the series too) aren't afraid to kill or maim or twist characters when it suits them to do so.

And you too Reboot--I'm worried that you're gettign competely burnt out on comics in general and hardly collect anything anymore. I need your strong opinions on LW to balance out everyone's comments.

PS - as an update, I picked up Jack Staff too but haven't read it yet. I'll definately post my thoughts when I do.
PPS - I *may* pick up a Project Superpowers or Black Terror issue sometime soon. Unsure yet. I'm leaning more towards Black Terror as there is more than enough ensemble comic books out there these days but not enough solo comics based on characters with awesome death/pirate motifs.

I've decided to officially drop JLI: Generation Lost and Brightest Day. I kept hemming and hawing doing so for weeks and that's never a good sign. This frees up four comics each month I can collect instead.
Other comics I've dropped recently: New Mutants, Black Terror, JSA: All-Stars.

I'm still getting both, but I can't blame ya for dropping Brightest Day. It's really so choppy with the randomness of how the stories rotate. I kinda like the Firestorm and Aquaman arms, but from issue to issue, I don't know if I'll see anything on them. The stuff with J'Onn and the Hawks particularly just seems to drag.
I haven't been able to bring myself to drop it thus far because: a) my 12 year-old son looks forward to it a lot as Blackest Night kinda made him a junkie for that storyline & b) if I drop it, I'm afraid I'll miss a big payoff that admittedly won't come until the end (if at all). Anyhow, we're at the halfway point, so I may as well keep going.
As for JL: Gen Lost, I'm simply enjoying that one too much to drop it! It's a fun, breezy read, and the characters are being written pitch-perfectly and engagingly. Yeah, the story seems a little thin for its length, but the execution has been really good despite that fault. Though it isn't revolutionary by any means, it's the best thing to have the name "Justice League" on it in too, too many years. And it's still clicking on all cylinders even with Giffen no longer involved. Occasionally, Winick surprises!
Maybe you can say a little more about what went into your decision to drop those books (especially Gen Lost)?
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I'll say neither decision came easy--it took me weeks for both to finally decide. The fact is, I love all the characters in both bi-weekly series, and I partially was just collecting because I love the characters.
For Brightest Day, it was the inconsistency that killed it for me. I want to collect all comics with these guys, but just about the entire thing read like utter crap to me other than the Aquaman and Firestorm stuff, and even that wasn't anything special. I liked the artwork but it just wasn't enough for 2 issues per month.
JLI was much harder for me, and there is a chance I may start collecting again on a whim. But the story felt a little flat to me and just felt like it wasn't going anywhere.
The real decision-maker was the fact that these were 4 comics a month at $2.99 which feels ridiculous to me, when I know I can get (4) other comics. I remember when 52 was coming out, a big point was made that it was $2.50. I just feel like for that much of a commitment from the buyer, the series better be damn excellent. And neither was quite on that level.
But like I said, there is always the chance I'll back track and jump back in. Back issues for these two are easy to find, they aren't exactly obscure.
I loved 52 and think it was a masterpiece. I also loved Wednesday Comics. But Countdown really turned me off to the idea of getting suckered into collecting a more-than-once-a-month comic book. I didn't even bother with Trinity and Spider-Man is IMO much better than either Brightest Day or JLI even though that has bouts of inconsistency as well.
For Brightest Day, it would take quite a bit to pull me back in. For Gen Lost, I think if some posters on LW (and I'll continue to read spoilers and reviews) made some commentary on how good the overall plot has developed, that could convince me to come back in.

Drop the ones you aren't enjoying. For instance, if the portrayal of Black Canary is really getting you that far down, then Birds of Prey should go.
Also, books that haven't shipped yet are easier to dump, as you're not partway into anything yet.
IMO, you may as well finish up minis that only have an issue or two left, unless you aren't enjoying them.
Posted by rouge on :
Just taking a walk backwards through the thread, you had 15 titles in June, up to 21 in July and now you are at 38! Granted there are one-shots and whatnot, but your list seems to be expanding quite rapidly. I won't presume to tell you what you should or shouldn't like, but I will say it looks like you are adding more books than you probably would enjoy.
As a rule of thumb I always try and keep a limit on my title count. If a new book comes out that puts me above that, I drop something I haven't been enjoying. It seems harsh, but I've found I don't really miss the titles I abandon as much as I thought. Just go down the list, and put them in an order of preference and cut the bottom half or so.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I put a $$ cap for every month. It's really a $$ cap for every week but I give it a little leeway so if week (1) is up $7.00, then I try to subtract $7.00 from the previous weeks.
The cap has risen a bit from 10 years ago because of price per comic, but I feel that if I have a real number, which I can calculate in the store, I feel a lot less stress about it.

Okay, here's what I'm dropping:
Avengers: The Children's Crusade (It's nine parts and two have come out, I can miss a couple) Batwoman (My brother's actually splitting for this one) Birds of Prey (I know I said I was buying this only to support a friend, but Black Canary pisses me off so, so much) Black Terror (Don't know when it's starting again) Gen13 (Even though I hate dropping another Wildstorm title, I'll get the new issue after Christmas) Grimm Fairy Tales Halloween 2010 Grimm Fairy Tales: Neverland (Miniseries should be over soon/missed an issue) Mighty Crusaders (Only have issue one) New Mutants Forever (Hasn't made THAT much effect but I'm still curious as to how it'll end, but I can wait) The Stand (It's the last issue and I should have some time before the last one starts) Time Masters (Missed the first issue) Tom Strong And The Robots of Doom (Missed last issue) Ultimate X (Missed first issue) Wonderland Annual 2010

Following the close of Comic Book Review Month, here is my pull list, or rather, what I think it will be around March-April 2011. I’m more committed than ever to letting the excellence of independent comics, particularly offering from Image, decide what I’ll be collecting, rather than succumbing to event nonsense. I’ve gladly decided not to collect Flashpoint Fear Itself, Brightest Day, Age of X, etc.
There are several comics that are on hiatus I haven’t included but would certainly continue (Unknown, Mystery Society, Umbrella Academy, etc.)
DC Comics Batman Detective Comics Batman & Robin Batman, Inc. Dark Knight Batwoman Superman/Batman Superman Action Comics Supergirl Superboy Legion of Super-Heroes Adventure Comics Green Lantern Green Lantern Corps Emerald Warriors Flash Wonder Woman Birds of Prey Zatanna Booster Gold Doom Patrol Justice Society of America Freedom Fighters R.E.B.E.L.S. Icon Criminal / Incognito Powers Scarlett – may be canceling this, still on the fence Kick-Ass Superior Nemesis
Image Comics The Walking Dead Haunt Super Dinosaur Invincible – TPB only, though I’m on the fence about continuing Mice Templar Chew Morning Glories Turf Who is Jake Ellis – if I can ever find a CBS who has it
Dark Horse Magnus, Robot Fighter Doctor Solar Turok, Son of Stone Mighty Samson Hellboy – TPBs & one-shots Umbrella Academy
Red 5 Comics Atomic Robo
IDW Fallen Angel
Dynamite Entertainment Warlord of Mars Green Hornet: Year One – at least until Wagner’s run is over Green Hornet – on the fence about continuing Lone Ranger –should it restart Battlefields
Potential Additions Xombi - Fraser Irving art Red Lantern(s?) Iron Man 2.0 – based on the genius of Nick Spencer, I’ll take a look. Annihilators – the $4.99 price point likely will push me away Heroes for Hire – still on the fence Hack / Slash – I really enjoyed the recent miniseries but I’m still not ready to commit 100%; a buy in store decision. The Infinite Vacation – again, Nick Spencer makes it worth a look Proof: Endangered – I’m considering getting into this series, either through trades or looking through back issues. Echoes – The premise of this Top Cow book (and the high recommendations) have me interested. Axe Cop – looks really awesome Dark Horse Presents – though the price point may push me away

Posted by Blacula on :
Went back through this thread and it's nearly exactly a year since I last updated my pull-list.
Here's what I'm buying now -
ONGOINGS:
* Adventure Comics - Phil Jiminez and the Legion Academy saved this book from getting dropped. * Legion of Super-Heroes - Still enjoying this book and team a lot... but there's room for improvement. * Green Lantern - Starting to tire of the very cluttered GL-verse. Johns needs to go back to telling more focused, smaller-scale stories here IMO. * Batman Inc. - Morrison's Batman-opus continues to be amazingly good. The delay between issues is starting to hurt though. * Detective Comics - Snyder and Jock's tales here remind me a bit of Peter Milligan's run in the early 90s. That's high praise. * Batwoman - Really liked Williams' #0 issue and hoping he makes me like Kate Kane more than Rucka did. * Brave and Bold - If it ever comes back. I miss you B&B.
MINIS:
* DCU Legacies - Lost some of its quality since it's start but it's only got one issue left now so I'm gonna finish it. * Brightest Day - The action is heating up now. I can honestly say I have no idea how this series is going to end too so that's kinda exciting.
TRADES:
*Walking Dead - still addicted.
So, not very many comics obviously. And there aren't many on the horizon which interest me much either. I've decided to sit out the whole Flashpoint event since I'm not reading Flash or care much about alternate universes - which would make this the first DC event since (I think) Genesis that I've skipped.
That's gonna be weird, but DC just don't have many creative teams telling stories that interest me at the moment. I want new blood at that company SO bad - starting at the top with their editors.

Chalk me up as another big Maleev fan! I loved what he did on Daredevil, as well as Spider Woman.
You'll note in my pull list I'm buying Scarlet now but it's on the fence. I initially liked what Bendis was doing narrative-wise, but the overall story (a revolution) just isn't working for me. I've kind of just been buying it for Maleev's gorgeous work.
I'll definitely be getting Moon Knight. These two work great together and Maleev's art should be fantastic with Moon Knight's awesome look. Bendis usually does a good job writing--he's exactly like Geoff Johns, but Marvel's version. Great writer who does a lot of things right but also has some really annoying habits. Also has perhaps too much control of his universe (like Geoff) and is also the darling of fandom (like Geoff).

Lots of cool creator-owned projects being announced at CCI!
"Saga" by BKV and Fiona Staples is one I'll certainly check out! I miss having a monthly Vaughn title like Y or Runaways.
"Thief of Thieves" has a great premise and approach creatively with a rotating writer team. Especially since my faves Nick Spencer and Robert Kirkman are involved. I'm looking for 'different approaches' to comics structurally so this could be fun.
Also, is anyone picking up Witchdoctor? The preview story in WD was good but it might not be my cup of tea.

Dev, I know you love AmVamp, so you should really be checking out Snyder's other books! His run on Detective (soon to transfer over to DCnU Batman) has been EFFIN' AWESOME! He's also got a book with Image beginning next week called Severed which looks to have a horror bent to it like AmVamp. I'm also planning to pick up Swamp Thing just because he's writing it.
Also...I assume it's non-listing is an oversight, but you ARE getting the AmVamp: Survival of the Fittest mini, right?
If Snyder keeps this quality up, he may earn fave writer status with this poster!
Posted by Dev - Em on :
Have not actually bought that (AV:SotF), but yeah, it's in the pull box.
I will probably get his Severed. Enjoying Detective, but with one issue to go, I left it off. Who knows on the others...I may break down and grab them when I see them...but I am planning on skipping most of the DCnU.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Severed actually seems very cool, more psychological horror than gore.
I accidentally bought the AmVamp spin off mini #2 twice--so if someone wants a copy let me know! I did the same with Cinderella #3. I need to move closer to my CBS so I can go more often.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I get what you mean on not bothering to wrap up some DC series before the #1's. I did the same with Zatanna and JSA.
Posted by Lard Lad on :
I know the DCnU is turning you off, Dev, but I can't see how it would stop you from picking up Snyder's Batman, at least, since you're enjoying 'Tec. (If Swamp Thing ain't yer bag, I can see that one.)
So...are you two really elevating Marvel above DC lately? REALLY?!? True, just as with DC, there are quality Marvel books to be found, but don't forget you're paying that extra buck for many of the ones that are worth getting. I'm trade-waiting the new Cap run for that very reason, plus I'm skeptical that with McNiven on art that the book will ship in a timely manner or without subpar guest artists.
IMO, I'd put Marvel and DC about on the same level of quality but give DC the edge because of the price point and the comparative number of books I find *excellent* rather than *very good.* (Yes, I include the Vertigo books, there.)
Of course, Image and Dynamite kick both Marvel's and DC's asses on a regular basis....

I've done the same with a few--the post-Gail Simone BoP and the remaining Xombis leap to mind--but I wouldn't dare miss the last few issues of Batgirl and Secret Six among others.
Posted by Lard Lad on :
Also, I know another advantage in Marvel's favor at the moment is the backlash to the DCnU thing. I'd say to this two things:
1) Don't pre-judge and overreact too much before even reading any of it.
&
2) Don't ever assume Marvel won't ever try the same stunt! Marvel said they wouldn't do OGNs, but they saw the success of Superman: Earth One and are doing they're own similar concept now. They're already constantly relaunching their big books as new number ones. If DCnU's model succeeds, I betcha Marvel follows suit.
Posted by Dev - Em on :
Fair points...although I am reacting to facts about certain characters that have turned me off. I m also sure that they think they have certain things figured out, but the 5 year timeline they are using makes no sense in some of the histories that they are keeping. I have to make a point somehow, and the only way I can make it is to not spend the money that I was going to.
As far as Marvel goes. I am trying out two new books right now. Daredevil and Cap. That's it. Daredevil was a fun read, and Cap was good as well...plus I want to get my wife reading something and she loved the Cap movie, so this is the perfect book. I think Marvel is going to look at all aspects of what DC is doing, and weigh the pros/cons and gauge fan reaction. They do do the renumbering thing all the time (which I have brought up before) so that does not surprise me. I would be surprised if they tried to pull the exact same thing, as they already rebooted their entire line with the Ultimate universe before...with mixed success over time.
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
IMO I'd say Marvel has the slight edge right now but it's kind of splitting hairs since both companies make the same annoying editorial and corporate mistakes. My reasoning is kind of the same: I think Marvel right now just has more excellent comics out than DC.
Both do have a lot of crap though. Likewise, each has their own selection of really good stuff. FYI, I do not consider Vertigo to be DC because Didio, Lee and Johns have (thankfully) nothing to do with it; likewise, I don't consider Icon to be Marvel. Both have superb creator-owned comics.
Like you, what really brings me enjoyment these days is the plethora of excellet creator-owned comics by Image and elsewhere. There are so many fantastic comics out there that I can't get enough. Additionally (as you also mention), Dynamite really knows how to produce some mind-blowing good licensed comics (and IDW sometimes too).
Back to Marvel and DC--I think Marvel has the edge in pure # of comics I can't miss each month (Shield, FF, Moon Knight, X-Force, DD, I-Hulks, Cap, Venom, etc) while DC only has a handful right now ('Tec, Bat Inc, Thunder Agents). That all might change (I do intend to try several in Sept that I'm really going out on a limb on for my own tastes).
You're right on about OGN. Talk about being hypocrites. It doesn't affect me too much since I generally don't buy superhero OGN's--just my type of buying style (we discussed this in a thread before).
Marvel and DC are massive companies whose decisions are influenced by tons of people we've never heard of. My loyalty to them is same as my loyalty to Bank of America and Geico. Non-existent. Sure, I've got nostalgia for both and characters at each that I love dearly and hope to follow for decades to come, but when discussing the actual publishing entity, I find them more annoying and harmful to comics than anything.
Posted by Lard Lad on :
I think how Marvel is sinning especially (compared to DC) is with their current death-stunt frenzy. They joked at one point that they were going to do "one death a quarter". But it appears that's exactly what they're doing! Rumor is, Cyclops may be the next to go in their Schism event. And of course, all (with the possible exception of Ultimate Spidey) probably have a planned follow-up event to bring them back. Pretty disgusting, I'd say! The worst part is that it's selling books.
Honestly, with Marvel, I don't think I've enjoyed anything recently as much as Slott's Amazing Spider-man, but I'm in fear of "Spider Island" jumping the shark! (We'll see.) FF is becoming increasingly unsatisfying on an individual issue basis, and Shield is difficult to follow with its publishing schedule and complex nature. Haven't gotten to my DD # 1, but I do anticipate enjoying based on all the positive reviews. Herc is decent, but I miss the iHerc vibe. Alpha Flight's just started and is a mini currently. Enjoying what I've read so far, but I know Alpha revivals never seem to succeed. Recently dropped Heroes for Hire. Honestly, I could probably drop the whole Marvel line with no problem.
I'll try a number of books in DCnU, and I'll keep buying a selection of Marvel books. But I do anticipate that my patronage of both will start to dwindle more and more in favor of companies like Image. Recent launches like Green Wake and Drums at Image continue to impress!

Man, I missed out on Green Wake. Didn't reserve and it's sold out every issue of my CBS! That's def a trade purchase for me (unless I find the issues).
Also, for the record, I'm LOVING Slott'e Spidey. It really feels like a true Spider-Man run but with it's own unique 'feel'.
Agree on the deaths. Super-annoying. And you're right, it sells which makes it more insulting. The Bucky Cap one was a new low.

I didn't reserve it, either, but my comics guy has been really good about ordering new Image books to put on the shelves. I read the reviews and thumbed through it at the shop and HAD to try it! Three issues in, I'm really enjoying this moody, eccentric series that's really hard to describe in a line or two! The art is lush and impressionistic but still tells the story--I detect a bit of a Sienckewitz influence. Definite contender for 2011's best new series for my vote!

It sure does! Excellent example of the reader shouldnt go into a series with any preconceptions (in this case about the author or status quo) because you can really be surprised by it's quality.

I just ordered the AmVamp TPB... took them forever to release the softcover and I missed the HC solicit! hopefully the next volumes will be forthcoming apace... Green Wake sounds interesting and looks stunning. I may check online with Midtown rather than tradesit...
Posted by Bicycle Repair Man on :
Still at the top of my list is P.S.238 by Aaron Williams, though it has been appearing less and less frequently over the past year. www.ps238.com
I'm also still getting Age Of Bronze by Eric Shanower, published intermittently by Image. www.age-of-bronze.com
Apparently, a new volume of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was just released; I'm working on tracking down a copy. This issue seems to have been solicited with very little fanfare, and I completely overlooked it.
Just one more issue to go for John Byrne's Next Men, though reportedly a spin-off of sorts is in the pipeline.
Which brings us to DC:
Justice League Justice League International
I've been following the JLA for forty years; I don't buy every tie-in miniseries, but I do always buy the main title. I can't get excited about "Justice League Dark" based on what I've heard about it so far, though.
Legion of Super-Heroes Legion Lost
Sticking with the LSH, and I will give the new spinoff a chance, though I for one would be a lot happier if Tellus and Gates were staying with the main team. The Legion needs *more* non-humanoid characters, and instead they're losing two of the few they had!
Action Comics Superman
I've been following the Super-titles for a while. I'm interested in seeing what the new creative teams will do ... though that cover for Superman # 1 looks disturbingly a lot more like S-Prime than good ol' Supes.
Captain Atom Mister Terrific
After reading a number of online interviews with writers of new ongoing DC titles, I have decided to give two of them a chance sight unseen. I was tempted by a few others, but I thought I'd better leave some room in my budget for miniseries. And sure enough, October brought:
LSH: Secret Origins (apologies if this is not exactly the correct title) The Shade Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes Posted by Lard Lad on :
So today, I figured out my new pull list as of September. I made quite a few cuts but anticipate I'll be sampling a lot of new books and possibly not having *hard* cuts on books I'm not gonna commit to anymore (like GL family and FF). So here, for the first time ever in this thread, is a complete Lardy Pull List for Sept/Oct.....
DC Legion of Super Heroes Legion Lost Legion: Secret Origin Batgirl Batwoman Batman Swamp Thing Firestorm Justice League Justice League International Flash Aquaman Superman
DC/Vertigo Scalped Fables American Vampire American Vampire : Survival of Fittest DMZ (trades)
Image Walking Dead Invincible Morning Glories Chew Green Wake Drums Severed Undying Love Who Is Jake Ellis? (trade)
Dynamite The Boys Boys: Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker Jennifer Blood Lone Ranger Vol. 4 (trade)
IDW Cold War (new John Byrne project) Legion/Star Trek
I will be evaluating all my titles closely and anticipate updating my pull month-to-month.

Jillikers! I can't wait for Comic Book Review Month: September Edition for you to review all of those! Green Wake, Drums, Undying Love--all comics I haven't tried! Jennifer Blood, which I'm also reading. And Ka-Zar which totally flew under my radar!
Cool to have you post this Lardy!
Like you, so many DC Comics are in that "bubble" where I'll be testing the waters here and there. I might say I'm not going to get it, but chances are I'll buy at least #1 and #2.

Yeah, if you look back thru this thread, this really IS the first time I've posted a full list! There are a few others I'm gonna try like JL Dark and maybe the GL titles if the reviews show they're going in the direction I want them to, but these are what I want held in my bag. I'm tempted to pare things down even more, so I can continue to try new awesome-looking Image titles!
I just read Drums #2 last night: this Image mini is FRICKIN' AWESOME!!! I hope it gets an ongoing upgrade like Green Wake did. Undying Love looks to be a series of miniseries. Reviews of all three will be upcoming--PROMISE!
Issue 1 of the Ka-Zar mini was pretty terrific as well--I posted a mini-review here!
Accidentally unlisted on the Image section was Jonathan Hickman's The Red Wing. I read issue one yesterday, as well, and so far, it looks to be better than either his FF or SHIELD!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
I also loved Hickman's Red Wing and was all set up to review before I got pulled away to do something else. We should both make sure to review #2!
I know nothing about Drums or Undying Love and am now curious!
Posted by Cobalt Kid on :
Is anyone getting Blue Estate by Image? I've been hemming and hawwing for awhile and now wish I'd added it right away. I'll have to trackdown the back issues and those are hard to find (I'll ask my CBS guy anyway if he can help).
It looks really good.
Instead I probably got something terrible like the latest issues of Action Comics or Uncanny X-Men. Dumb, Cobie, dumb!
Posted by Lard Lad on :
I'm picking up Blue Estate, Des. Overall, I'm enjoying it. It doesn't feel "must read" at this point, so I didn't put it on my official pull. However, I do plan to continue to pick it up over at least the next 2 or 3 issues minimum. I'll try to post a more specific review soon.

Egads! Two months ago, pre-DCnU, I only had 3 titles on my pull list, and just one of them was from DC (Legion). Now I have 24 books on my list, and all but 6 are from DC!

I'm also collecting more DCnU than I intended!
I've actually made some small cuts on comics I wasn't truly enjoying to make more room for them:
Super Dinosaur Ultimate Spider-Man (in fact I passed on all the Ultimate relaunches) The Dark Tower (just doesn't thrill me like the novels did). House of Mystery (cancelled but I was gonna axe it anyway).
There's a few more that might be cut but in a lot of cases the publishers are making my list smaller anyway.
Nonetheless, I'm still collecting way more comics in Oct than I was in Aug!

One of the things Marvel is trying to sneakily do is while they shrink their line and cancel titles, is make a lot of comics ship bi-monthly so readers are spending double every other month or so. As expected, there is no announcement as they try to pull a fast one rather than be up front about it. It's not a bad policy if the series is fantastic--I'll take 2 a month if I love the series. Unfortunately, many comics I only casually like are the ones coming out way too much. So I've begun cancelling a few, since I'm constantly trying to trim my DC's these days to make room for all the excellent comics from Image, Dynamite and other publishers.
Out (prob more to come) Hulk - the Red Hulk one X-Factor Avengers Academy
I also dropped I, Zombie. I love the art but the story just hasn't been doing it for me. For a number of month I could hardly do more than breeze through and look at the art and that's just not enough to keep me buying.

As I am getting back into reading comics, I am also making cuts so pull list is far from finalized.
Recently cut Animal Man and Batwoman.

Hey Pete! Great to see you back here! What'cha reading these days?
I second Lash's recommendation for Young Avengers--it's damn near perfect, except for the fact that its so unreliable schedule-wise.
Daredevil is my absolute favorite comic book by DC or Marvel these days. It has my highest recommendation! It totally kills everything else the big two publish.
Lash, the one comic that I'm just shocked you're not reading it Atomic Robo! It's so right up your alley! The tone, the humor, the crazy usage of super-science...it's as if the creative team of Matter-Eater Lad: the Series started up a comic book company and needed a series to publish first and then recognized that there was only one contender: Atomic Robo.

That, Avengers Academy and X-Factor are now my only three Marvel titles.
With Young Avengers: Children's Crusade, the writer is dancing around a level of pandering that borders on fanfic. Wanda is back, and not to blame for what happened. Ant-Man is back. Rictor has his powers again. There are scenes that seem to written entirely to pander to fans of the Wiccan/Hulkling romance. It *reads* like a fanfic.
And yet, I don't mind.
It's not the egregious sort of pandering that I saw in Mighty Avengers, where pretty much everyone in the universe (including Eternity, the sentient embodiment of the universe itself!) had to show up and regale us with how awesome Pym was. It's just sort of a 'feel-good' comic, for me, and while so many other titles are bumbling around deconstructing characters and tearing stuff apart, Children's Crusade seems to be working at *building* stuff and fixing stuff that's broken.
It's kind of refreshing, really, like a glimmer of light at the end of a dark, dark tunnel we've been stuck in for two decades now.

Cut a bunch of the New (now old) 52 books. I'm sick of The Joker, so Batman got cut in anticipation and I was on a roll so got rid of Batwoman, Catwoman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman. I'll keep Green Arrow for a few more issues just because Nocenti's stories have been sort of interesting, although I find the lead character totally uninteresting at this point.
There just didn't seem to be much going on in each issue compared to how these books started out.
That leaves:
Legion of Super Heroes Legion Lost (don't love it, but sticking with it) Stormwatch Demon Knights The Hypernaturals The Massive (only 1 more issue) Fables (getting iffy) Fairest (also getting iffy) 20th Century Boys (manga)
in trades: Chew ordered Saucer Country and Saga
So that frees up some $ for something new and individual graphic novels.
I'm sort of disappointed with the New 52. There was a lot of variety at the start, but the stories seem to be falling into the standard superhero over-extended battles.

Up to six titles, idly considering adding one or two if something interesting catches my eye. (I'm thinking about taking another look at Red Hood & the Outlaws, to see if it's gotten better, for instance, and depending on how this new Cyberforce relaunch works, checking it out.)
Legion of Super-Heroes Legion Lost (which I'm buying out of sheer stubborness, since it feels like it's been circling the drain since day one, and just refuses to fall away) X-Factor Avengers Academy Teen Titans (which, at this point, I'm buying mainly for the art, 'cause I'm shallow) Hypernaturals

Fat Cramer pushed me over the edge and I picked up the last two issues of Red Hood & the Outlaws. It's pretty cool, and I think I'll keep grabbing it for awhile! Thanks FC!

Due to some circumstances, I no longer have an official pull list. I have a lot of comics to catch up on in my current box, and I will continue with a handful of series. But overall, I am pretty much done with comics. Focusing what little money I have for fun on movies and stuff for the kids.

^ Another one bites the dust.

As a die hard Legion fan, my pull list only has two titles on it:
Legion of Super Heroes Legion Lost
Although I must admit I pull out my old Atari Force collection from the mid 1980's for a great sci-Fi read.

Despite my growing dissatisfaction, my list hasn't shrunk much, although I did find my self hoping Legion Lost and Frankenstein get canned in the next round, which is probably a sign I should do it myself. Swamp Thing and Animal are also dangerously close to the chopping block too. Stormwatch bought itself a reprieve with a few good issues but Milligan really needs to get a handle on what he wants to do with Red Lanterns (though the zero issue was decent). Most of the others I'm still enjoying, although Demon Knights is still hit or miss.
Action Comics Happy Batman Inc. Hellblazer Stormwatch Red Lanterns Legion of Super-Heroes Legion Lost World's Finest Dial H Demon Knights Frankenstein Agent of SHADE Animal Man Swamp Thing
And the kids get:
Superman Family Adventures Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic Universe

Okay...got a new list.
The Walking Dead Saga Ghostbusters Threshold The Shadow: Year One FF (maybe F4) LSH

I may also check into Journey into Mystery for the Sif story to see if it's appropriate for Hannah. She liked her in the movie Thor.

Chew gone again?

Way behind on it right now. I may fill in and then go the trade route. Depends. I will catch up with it sooner or later.

Here's what I gave to my comic book guy this week:
Avatar Press Fashion Beast
Dark Horse • Angel & Faith • Billy the Kids Oddities • Buffy • Colder • Conan the Barbarian • Creep • Massive • Star Wars (new Brian Wood series)
Dynamite Entertainment Lone Ranger The Lone Ranger: Snake of Iron
IDW High Ways (John Byrne)
Image America's Got Powers Bedlam Black Kiss II Change Chew Clone Comeback Fatale Great Pacific Happy Invincible Mara Mind the Gap Morning Glories Peter Panzerfaust Revival Saga Storm Dogs Thief of Thieves Walking Dead Where is Jake Ellis
Oni Press Stumptown V2
DC Comics American Vampire Batman Before Watchmen: Minute Men Detective Comics Fables Legion of Superheroes Punk Rock Jesus
Marvel Amazing Spider-Man Daredevil Hawkeye
***Should cover from now thru February. Lots of speculating on the new Image relaunches. A couple of the solicits, like Nowhere Men, didn't interest me enough to reserve.

Impressive list, sir! As usual, you've got your finger on the pulse of the very best of what's going on in comics.
A few random thoughts:
Also grabbing Change myself from Image. Ales Kot impressed me with Wild Children and I think he's going to be a real fresh voice in comics.
I actually *am* getting Nowhere Men (Image). The visual design that I've seen so far was very good, and I just really like Eric Stephenson 'the person'. We'll see if I like him as a writer.
Like you, I'm full time collecting Punk Rock Jesus (Vertigo) which has been too awesome for words.
How's the Creep from Dark Horse been? This was one I hemmed and hawwed about in the CBS but ultimately passed on. I do like Arcudi.
Byrne's art for High Ways (IDW) looks mesmerizing.
Glad you're grabbing Where is Jake Ellis! I'm also definitely grabbing Mara, Great Pacific, Storm Dogs and Bedlam. I was leaving Clone as a 'decide on the spot buy'.
I considered Multiple Warheads from Image but didn't reserve it. I haven't been to the CBS in over a month. So now I probably missed the small window to get it (if my CBS even ordered it) and ultimately will just pass.
How's Fashion Beast?
No Free Cyberforce issues? I'm grabbing them because their free and will give them the chance to draw me in. I would never think of getting it if it wasn't free though.

I eventually picked up the free Cyberforce issue because the price couldn't be beat (right? )and because you said some kind words about it. Haven't read yet but will eventually.
I may still pick up Nowhere Men if the reviews are good but having Stephenson writing it was the main reason to not have it in the pull. He's a great comics exec, but I'm skeptical about him as a writer. Seems he scripted some of those early Liefeld abominations for Image, too, so that's a minus if I'm right.
Many of those other upcoming Image books seem worth a look for one reason or another, even if some of their creative teams are unfamiliar. I don't want to miss the next big thing from Image!
Haven't read the first Fashion Beast issue yet, but it IS Alan frickin' Moore, and the reviews have been VERY good! It's based on an unproduced movie script he wrote. So while he didn't script it for this adaptation, it's apparently very faithful. the art looks great, too.
(Fuck! I just realized I left Saucer Country off the list! Still grabbing that one and still enjoying. The first of a two-parter I just read in which Cornell details some stuff about America's UFO/alien abduction thru one of the characters is eye-opening!)
I read Creep #0 the other day. So far...so good! Kind of a noirish book that really drew me in. When I read another issue, I'll give a deeper analysis.
